    Writing Technical Articles
The notes below apply to technical papers in computer science and electrical engineering, with emphasis on papers in systems and networks. Read Strunk and White, Elements of Style . Again. Give the paper to somebody else to read. If you can, find two people: one person familiar with the technical matter, another only generally familiar with the area. Papers can be divided roughly into two categories, namely original research papers and survey papers. There are papers that combine the two elements, but most publication venues either only accept one or the other type or require the author to identify whether the paper should be evaluated as a research contribution or a survey paper. (Most research papers contain a "related work" section that can be considered a survey, but it is usually brief compared to the rest of the paper and only addresses a much narrower slice of the field.)
    Research Papers
A good research paper has a clear statement of the problem the paper is addressing, the proposed solution(s), and results achieved. It describes clearly what has been done before on the problem, and what is new. The goal of a paper is to describe novel technical results. There are four types of technical results:

Online Technical Writing: Common Grammar, Usage, and Spelling Problems
This appendix covers only those grammar, punctuation, usage, and spelling problems that give people the biggest headaches. If you can't find answers to what you are looking for here, consult a standard reference handbook such as one of the following (try to get an edition published after 1990):

Technical-writing professionals try to simplify grammar rules as much as possible, without hurting the language or putting themselves in straitjackets. Typically, they work in teams and frequently move in and out of projectsso that the same document may be worked on by different writers and editors during the space of just a few years. That's why any guidelines based on interpretation or personal style or judgment must be avoided. Interested in courses related to this page or a printed version? See the

I began this document in 1978, when I was teaching undergraduate classes in electrical engineering and found that my students needed some guidance on grammar and style. I enlarged this document frequently during my ten years as a professor. During 1990-95, I shared this document with my colleagues in Germany who wanted to know more about style in American English. The favorable reaction of my former students and my German colleagues has encouraged me to post this document on the Internet, in the hope that it might be useful to a wider audience.

G.L. Kittredge and F.E. Farley: An Advanced English Grammar
originally published by Ginn in 1913, reprinted by AMS Press in New York City in 1972.
Teaching formal grammar became unfashionable in many schools in the USA in the 1970s, which has had disastrous consequences for the ability of professionals in the USA to produce erudite prose. The lack of modern reference books means that one must rely on old grammar books, like this one. This old book even contains conjugation of the verb to be for four tenses of the subjunctive mood. There are still some judges that use subjunctive mood for contrary-to-fact statements in writing their opinions, but use of the subjunctive seems to be rare in most other writings by American authors.
