Fritjof Capra, The Web of Life, 1996, 347p ($23.95) - systems theory, deep ecology, chaos theory. Appears to be a good understanding of where science is going? Hoagland and Dodson, The Way Life Works, 1995, 233p ($35.00) - really explains molecular biology with lots of great illustrations. Christian de Duve, Vital Dust, 1995, 362p ($25.00 though I got this book heavily discounted) - from dust to the present, how chemistry and life evolved. Scott Gilbert, Developmental Biology, 5 th Edition , 1997, 918p, $65 - previous editions have been excellent. Cells, Embryos, and Evolution , 1997, 642p, $65 - EXCELLENT Bart Kosko

Making Your Words Count – Writing Speeches/Presentations
    by Elsie Walker Current Openings:
Yes, Open enrollment Do you need to give presentations at work? Or, are you looking for a new skills set to add to your freelance portfolio of services? In this course, we’ll talk about writing three types of speeches; narrative, informative and persuasive. Whether learning how to write a speech for someone else or yourself, this course will give you the insight and boost you need to make your words count The goal of this course is in to introduce students to the mechanics of speechwriting. I'll discuss the basic format of a speech and what goes into creating the three different types of speeches: Narrative, Informative, and Persuasive. Through homework, students will look at some famous speeches to get a feel for some of the wording techniques used. Also, they'll get a chance to practice some skills by writing three short speeches. In addition, I'll talk about PowerPoint, a presentation graphics software package that can be used to create visual aids and handouts to go with speeches/presentations. Other topics addressed in the class will include audience, things to consider when writing speeches for others, and what Toastmasters Internationals can do to help speechwriters to hone their skills.

    User Guide Workshop
    by Elsie Walker Current Openings:
Yes, Open enrollment Want to get more experience in user guide writing? Want to add some technical writing samples to your portfolio? In this continuation of our introductory class, students focus on a writing project which will further hone their skills and could be used in their portfolio as a sample of their user guide writing ability. This is a workshop rather than a course. Though there will be some readings, the emphasis of the course is on writing and getting feedback from the instructor. The goal of the workshop is to help students hone their user guide writing skills while building up their portfolio. One of the things about starting out in technical writing is that you don't have any samples of user guide work to show prospective employers. The case study used in this workshop can be used to that end. Again, although the focus is mostly on writing and feedback, we' will talk about a few extra topics such as style and style-sheets, proofreading, and creating message logs.

This course is a four-credit course that fulfills Northeastern University's Middler Year Writing Requirement. It is designed to help you develop an effective method of planning and completing writing tasks so that you can meet professional writing demands. In the professional world, most if not all technical professionals write on a daily basis. Because succeeding in the professional world requires not only technical knowledge but also effective writing skills, we focus on the writing skills necessary for advanced academic and professional writing, tailored specifically to your academic and career work as professionals in a technical field. Successful technical communicators know how to organize and present complex information so that the ideas are understandable to many readers, viewers, and listeners. In this course, you will complete several small assignments and a minimum 5,000-word recommendation report on a topic related to your major. Indeed, this course requires intensive writing, reading, and peer commentary; you will be writing or revising almost every week. Although the course will require much time and effort, by the end of the quarter you will have produced a professional portfolio of your work that you can provide to prospective employers or graduate schools. You must make a serious commitment to this course if you want to pass and reap the rewards this course has to offer.
