Writing Cover Letters
Should I include a cover letter with my resume?
The answer is a resounding, "Yes!" Most online career advisors agree While most career advisors agree that you should always send a cover letter with your resume, some don't agree that employers read it first. Instead, employers may read your resume first, then your cover letter if they're still interested. But, regardless of when they read it, most employers expect you to include one with your resume. It's been a standard practice for a long time. Complying with the standard makes you appear to be a knowledgeable professional. Your cover letter is a significant part of your resume, and a good one can make you stand out among competing candidates. No matter how hard you try, it's difficult to make your resume stand out among those that list similar qualifications. Resumes all follow the same

EB-STC Minigrant Program for Teachers What are the goals? Who is eligible to apply? How do I apply? What is the scope? ... What are the objectives? The East Bay chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (EB-STC) announces a continuing program of in-kind minigrants to assist teachers interested in presenting technical writing to middle- or high-school students. The minigrants, although valued from several hundred to several thousand dollars, consist entirely of professional services donated pro bono by volunteer EB-STC members. What are the goals? The goal of this program is to enable grade-appropriate instruction in basic technical writing skills and techniques to meet student and teacher needs through direct personal and professional support for the teachers who offer it. Who is eligible? Public middle- and high-school teachers throughout the geographic area served by EB-STC, in English or other relevant subjects (such as science), are invited to apply. The relevant area includes East Bay communities from Fremont north to Richmond and east to Antioch. (We encourage interested teachers outside this area to contact us since comparable support negotiated from near-by STC chapters or by special arrangement might still be possible.)

93. Guidelines For Academic Paper Homework Assignments

http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/lisak/academicHWGuidelines.html
Guidelines for Academic Paper Homework Assignments
The following information applies to all papers that you write for the Academic portion of our class. Additional information, specific to individual assignments, will be discussed in class.
Formatting and Structure:
Papers should be at least four pages long, broken down into the following parts:
Title Page
Bullet Points Page
Body of the Paper
Title Page:
A title should attract the reader's attention and give some quick information about your topic. Think up an interesting, accurate, descriptive title for your paper. *Never* simply call it "Homework #X". Also avoid using the same title as the journal article. That topic is not the same as your topic. They are writing about some CS topic; you are writing about how well they wrote their article. Finally, when choosing your title, keep in mind that this is a technical paper for fellow Computer Scientists: you don't want to be dull and boring, but neither do you want to appear cute or silly. Follow the title with your name, the date, and the class name. If you want to include the homework number, this is the place to put it. Don't write your full social security number on the paper. If you are in the habit of doing this, it is probably a good habit to break. You should keep your SSN private unless it is explicitly requested.
Bullet Points Page:
This page should contain four individual bullet-pointed items, each *no more* than one sentence long. Each point should be a full grammatically correct English sentence, and stand on it's own away from the other bullet points.

• Description

Abstract The description, together with the claims, is often referred to as the specification. As this word suggests, these are the sections of the patent application where you specify what your machine or process is and how it differs from previous patents and technology. The description starts off with general background information and progresses to more and more detailed information about your machine or process and its parts. By starting with an overview and continuing with increasing levels of detail you guide the reader to a full description of your intellectual property. You must write a complete and thorough description as you cannot add any new information to your patent application once it is filed . You can only make changes to the subject matter that could be reasonably inferred from the original drawings or description. Professional help may be of benefit to ensure maximum protection for your intellectual property. Be careful not to add any misleading information or omit relevant items.

This understanding is sometimes taken for granted and students who are not familiar with this terminology can have a hard time following the lesson. In order to help with this problem, this feature presents an extract with a follow-up guide giving examples of the most important terminology. By quickly reviewing this reference sheet, you can quickly brush-up your or your class' understanding of key grammar terminology, while at the same time reviewing some basic grammar concepts. Each grammar terminology reference is presented in bold followed by a number. Explanations of these reference numbers follow at the end of the extract.
