Teen Information Many teens feel as if they are alone in their distress over gambling. This is not true! In fact, teenagers make up the second fastest growing age group of problem gamblers. If you are wondering if you are suffering from or may be developing a gambling problem, think about these questions or situations:
  • Does your group of friends gamble on various things, cards, dice, events, games, or on line sites? Has gambling become your favorite (or only) activity? Do you have trouble concentrating on homework or other things because you are thinking of gambling all the time? Have you ever gotten in trouble in school for gambling? Have you skipped school to gamble? Are you drinking alcohol or taking drugs? Have you missed important family events or snuck out of them to gamble? Do you like being the center of attention and enjoy talking or bragging about your winnings? Have you ever borrowed or stolen money to gamble?

Teen Sex Addiction Sex addiction is not restricted to any age group, but it seems to often get rooted during the teen years. We wanted to address the teens out there in the hopes that they will join the growing numbers of people breaking free of addiction. This page is written primarily to teens who are interested in living to please God. If you do not know God, but are interested in learning about him, please visit our Peace with God page. The habits you form and the thought patterns you practice during your teen years are setting the foundations for the rest of your life. Pornography and other "sexually-charged" material cement unforgettable memories in your mind that will affect your future marriage and sex life. It will also corrupt your everyday thought patterns and how you relate to people. Other consequences can include:
  • Grieving God's Spirit Giving the devil a foothold to oppress you Curses on you, your partner and your future children Spiritual confusion Emotional confusion Unbridled pursuit of lust and perversion
These are just a few of the many possible consequences that could affect your body, mind and spirit. Please see

Video Game Addiction
Feb. 16 2001
Studies show that the excitement of video games makes playing them addictive. Parents of preteens hardly find this surprising.
Ask any preteen how they love to spend their spare time, and chances are you'll get an earful about video games. But why do they love them so? Are they addictive? According to some studies it would appear that the excitement of video games causes the brain to release a chemical that is, in essence, addictive. For any parent who has seen the fervor by which some kids play video games, this news is no surprise.
What makes these games so addictive? Media literacy specialist, Dr. Charles Ungerleider explains that "they're very compelling with increasing complexity, so a child becomes more facile, yet wants to know more and apply new skills." While wanting to improve their game isn't a problem in itself, it becomes one if video games are "taking a youngster away too much from other activities," says Ungerleider. "Then the parent has to intervene and limit the amount of time the youngster spends with the video game."
Professor of Computer Science, Maria Klavee feels video games, if not too violent, can "offer some real opportunities for puzzle solving, strategic and critical thinking". But she adds that it's important that video and computer games are played in moderation. Klavee says parents should "provide a selection of activities, not just the ones that have the most action or are addictive. Choose some that involve problem solving or good story lines. Also aim for a balance in your child's life. Sports are important, reading's important. Just think of computer games as one more component in a child's exploration of what's out there in society."

CNN Medical Senior Producer WASHINGTON (CNN) The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has introduced five new programs for treating marijuana addiction in adolescents. Researchers said the new programs are more effective than current outpatient treatment plans. "While no treatment is a magic bullet, each is associated with better results than existing treatments," said Michael Dennis, one of the researchers who designed the programs. National Drug Control Policy Director Barry McCaffrey was on hand when the agency announced the programs in September, which was designated as Recovery Month for SAMHSA. He called for $2.6 billion in additional spending. The programs were designed to work in outpatient treatment facilities. The five programs vary in length (six to 14 weeks), mode (individual, group and family), a planned number of sessions (five to 23) and cost. The programs are: 1. Motivational Enhancement Therapy/Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (MET/CBT5) is a five-session treatment with two private sessions to motivate the adolescent to change and three group sessions on marijuana refusal skills, social support for abstinence and relapse prevention.

The battle of the bottle of teen idols like Backstreet BoyA.J. McLean and actor Ben Affleck spurred the Enquirer last August to look at underage drinking locally. Brew, a Northern Kentucky teen, and 18-year-old Sylvia from Dayton were featured in the story. Both were recovering with the help of Kids Helping Kids (KHK), a Clermont County-based, nonprofit intervention program. Based on a kids-version of Alcoholics Anonymous' 12-step program, the program offers intensive therapy for the abuser and counseling for the entire family to deal with underlying issues. Brew left without completingthe program, and Sylvia is in the latter stages of recovery with KHK. For every teen who's left the program, there are scores of others to take their place. One currently with Kids Helping Kids is 17-year-old Laura from Western Hills.

Teenagers and Drugs Teenagers may be involved with legal or illegal drugs in various ways. Experimentation with drugs during adolescence is common. Unfortunately, teenagers often don¹t see the link between their actions today and the consequences tomorrow. They also have a tendency to feel indestructible and immune to the problems that others experience. Using alcohol and tobacco at a young age increases the risk of using other drugs later. Some teens will experiment and stop, or continue to use occasionally, without significant problems. Others will develop a dependency, moving on to more dangerous drugs and causing significant harm to themselves and possibly others. Adolescence is a time for trying new things. Teens use drugs for many reasons, including curiosity, because it feels good, to reduce stress, to feel grown up or to fit in. It is difficult to know which teens will experiment and stop and which will develop serious problems. Am I At Risk?

MH) Teen Seeks Treatment for Addiction, HIV Desperate 16-Year-Old Begs To Stay Locked Up Miami Herald; Sunday, December 19, 1993
Joseph Williams, Herald Staff Writer Becky spends her days as an inmate in the Broward County juvenile detention center, engaged in a quiet, desperate struggle to save her own life. Where most 16-year-olds long for freedom, Becky begged a judge to keep her locked up after her arrest for prostitution solicitation and cocaine possession last month. She said she needs help to forcibly break her addiction to crack cocaine and get treatment for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. The judge agreed to keep her locked up. But help still hasn't arrived. Despite a court mandate, an exhaustive search by a defense lawyer and state Health and Rehabilitative Services case workers, no area hospitals or treatment centers will agree to admit Becky. Although she has enrolled in two voluntary state treatment centers, Becky hasn't made it past the first week in either. Her desire to get high overpowers her desire to get better, her lawyer says. So she needs to find a place where she can be treated and stay locked up at the same time.

    ADOLESCENTS CAUGHT in the NET:
    INTERNET ADDICTION
    by John Suler, Ph.D.
Because cyberspace can satisfy so many of the adolescent's needs, there is the possibility of becoming "addicted" to it. Are all teens susceptible to this danger? No. Some will always be casual users, some may just go through phases of intense internet use. The ones who do fall prey to the net most likely are experiencing problems in their real lives. Cyberspace becomes an escape, a place to vent, a place to act out or even cry out for help. As Dr. Kimberly Young a psychologist who studies internet addiction points out in her book "Caught in the Net," internet-obsessed adolescents may become the "identified patient" in the family. Fingers are pointed at them and at the "evils" of the internet, when the real problems probably lie in the family. What are some of the danger signals of excessive internet use? In her book, Dr. Young identifies several warning signs: Denial and lying about the amount of time spent on the computer or about what they are doing on the computer.

    Hooked on Tobacco
    The Teen Epidemic
by Steven Listman As adult smokers quit, there’s a steady supply of teenagers stepping up to replace them. Every day, 3,000 American teens reach adulthood as confirmed cigarette smokers. That’s roughly equal to the number of adults who give up smoking or die from the disease it causes. Most teens start when they were legally too young to smoke. Kids under 18 smoke an estimated 17 billion of the 500 billion cigarettes sold each year in the U.S. Teen are the primary source of new smokers. After they turn 20, almost no one starts. According to a U.S. government survey, for a group of people in their 30’s who’d been daily smokers at some point (or still were), about 46% began smoking when they were 12 to 15 years old. Reasons Why Teens Smoke
According to University of California epidemiologist John Pierce, many teenagers typically start smoking as an occasional thing, “The overriding thing is the image of being cool,” says Pierce. “ They all think they’re not going to get addicted, that they can stop, but they can’t.” Of course, teens grow up in a culture that’s long been permeated with attractive images of smokers and cigarettes. Hollywood dose its share, but it’s the cigarette makers who have so wallpapered our world that their ads and logos are inescapable. The images they emphasize resonate perfectly with the psychological and social needs of adolescents, the need for social acceptance. Cigarette ads play to the craving for popularity: Newport ads invariably feature confident looking young couples having fun together, often with an erotic sub text. Camel ads call Joe a “smooth character.” With his saxophone, his panache, his Ray-Bans and his trendy wardrobe, Joe looks “smooth.”
