Attention All Teens
By Adriana Deitsch, NMF
My name is Adriana Deitsch. I am a 21-year-old intern who attends Hofstra University. I am happy to announce that I am working exclusively on the Teen Network from the NMF’s national office. Due to the terrific response we had from teens at the 2001 NMF Annual Conference in Seattle and the unbelievable number of teens who contacted our office to express a desire to communicate with other affected teens, the NMF Teen Network is flourishing. Just to take a step back for a minute for those new to the NMF newsletter, the Teen Network was formed to facilitate communication among teenagers affected by the Marfan syndrome. The teen-age years are tough, especially for those affected by the Marfan syndrome, so we put together this network as an outlet for teens to express and share their concerns, questions, stories and issues with other teenagers who can understand and relate. Whether you have had to deal with wearing big glasses, giving up a sport or dealing with doctors and numerous surgeries, it is important to know that you are not alone and that support, especially geared to teens, is available. I have worked closely with Megan Gillespie, who has served as teen chair of the NMF Conference for the past few years. Last year she started the Teen Network newsletter

NMF Teen Network As a result of the teens' camaraderie at the NMF annual conference each year, and their desire to keep in touch year-round, the NMF is establishing a Teen Network. To date, there are 20 teens on the Teen Network list. "We believe that teens will benefit from having a network of peers whom they can talk to about common issues. Teenagers face many challenges, which are sometimes multiplied when they have the Marfan syndrome. Many teens have questions and concerns; they may also have answers for others based on their own experiences. The Teen Network provides a vehicle for them to share with each other," says Kathy Jeffers, program coordinator. If you would like to become part of the Teen Network, please call the NMF office at 800-8-MARFAN, and leave your name, phone number and address to receive information about participating.

Children with the Marfan syndrome often hear questions from their classmates about their condition and don't know how to answer them. Here are a couple of ways that other affected children have addressed this:

45. Parental Influence In The Teen Years
through parental monitoring, talking about issues and sharing values. In the TAPresearch, parental monitoring is assessed by teen answers to these questions
http://ceinfo.unh.edu/common/documents/teenyear.htm
In June researchers announced that the teenage pregnancy rate had fallen to a record low level. The researchers from the Alan Guttmacher Institute, which focuses on reproductive health issues, said the pregnancy rate decreased by 4.4 percent between 1996 and 1997, continuing a trend seen since 1990.
There was great speculation as to why this might be so. Possibilities included the increase in government spending on sex education programs, the wider availability of birth control and fear of AIDS. It's unlikely there is only one factor that accounts for this result. More likely there is a constellation of influences.
One factor not mentioned was PARENTS. UNH Cooperative Extension's Teen Assessment Project (TAP) research data suggests that parents continue to impact their teens' decisions and behaviors in a number of different ways, through parental monitoring, talking about issues and sharing values.
In the TAP research, parental monitoring is assessed by teen answers to these questions:
  • If I am going to be home late, I am expected to call my parent(s) to let them know.

Return to: Table of Contents News and Views Home News and Views Reviews: Books The Inside Story on Teen Girls Reviewed by Karin Scheetz, M.A, Loyola College, Baltimore, MD The Inside Story on Teen Girls This book is meant to be used by teenage girls and their parents, both mothers and fathers. It can be useful to just about anyone who cares for or works with teenage girls. It is written in such a way that teenage girls of almost any age would likely find questions that apply to them, and answers that make sense. The answers are presented in a clear and straightforward way without using technical psychological terminology. This is the case for both sides of this book; however, the authors did use appropriate language and writing style for each of the target audiences. This book was not written to address the issues of teenage boys, so it would not be an appropriate book to assist in their adolescent difficulties. The Inside Story There are very few limitations I can come up with on this book. The authors do an excellent job of providing answers without telling the teens or their parents what to do. However, it seems as though some more guided tasks or activities that the teen and her parents can use may be sought by those reading the book. A workbook would be a perfect accompaniment to this wonderful book and would provide even more utility to its use as a bibliotherapy tool. One other limitation may be with severely dysfunctional families. This book seems to be more suited toward typical adolescent difficulties and may not be suitable for more serious adolescent and family problems.

  • How does your program address teens who are already sexually active? ...
  • How do I get the parents of my community to understand the importance of abstinence education and to get more involved? (i.e., Do you have anything for parents?)
    1. Q: Does CTB have any research proving its effectiveness? A: Yes. Several short- and long-term studies, conducted by respected research institutions, provide statistical and attitudinal evidence of the effectiveness of Choosing the Best . A study completed by Northwestern University among nearly 4,000 middle school students showed that 75% of all students indicated an intention to be abstinent until marriage AND 60% of students who had previously had sex indicated an intention to be abstinent in the future. A one-year follow-up study found a 54% reduction in recently sexually active students compared to a year ago. Department of Human Development and Family Studies, University of Missouri-Columbia Children are full of questions, and as they grow from toddlers to adolescents, their questions change from "Why do zebras have stripes?" to "Why is my body changing?" or "Why do I feel so mixed up?" The years from 10 to 14 are ones of discovery and questioning. Young adolescents question themselves, their sexuality and how they fit into the world. Although these questions are intensely personal, parents, peers and the social and cultural environment can all influence the answers. Parents often have concerns and questions about their child's developing sexuality. Parents want their children to be comfortable about sexuality, but they also want their sons and daughters to wait until they are older and more mature before having a sexual relationship.

EXETER - The essence of childhood can begin to fade for local students as they make the social transition from elementary school to middle school, says Julie Mills, community liaison for the New Outlook Teen Center in Exeter. Mills likens the transition to the students entering "a new world." "The is child becoming aware of himself, as well as issues of substance abuse and sexuality," Mills said, "and kids don’t know where to go or who to talk to (about these issues)." Which is why Mills is encouraging parents of sixth-graders, and sixth-graders themselves, to attend a free informational session to be held on Tuesday, Jan. 14. The discussion will be centered on parents’ and students’ questions about the issues sixth-graders face.
