How Telescopes Work

Maybe you've been out looking at the stars in the night sky, searching for constellations; or maybe you've already learned your way around the constellations, and now you'd like to take a closer look at objects like the moon, planets or stars with the aid of a telescope A telescope is a device used to magnify distant objects. There are many types to choose from, and many price ranges to consider. How do you know which one is best for you? How can you be sure that you won't be disappointed when you take your new telescope out to see the stars? In this edition of How Stuff Works , we will examine how a telescope works, discuss the various types of telescopes and take a look at telescope mounts and accessories. To access all of the different parts of this article, choose from the map below:

62. Equatorial Platform - Reagan's Dob Tracker
Information about stepper driven platform for dobsonian telescopes. Shows construction ideas and links to build a basic platform.
http://www.geocities.com/reaganjj
Equatorial Platform - Reagan's Dob Tracker The best of both worlds - a Dobsonian mount with the ability to track the Earth's rotation. The equatorial platform moves with the earth's rotation for up to one hour, then it needs to be rewound. The eyepiece is always in an easy location for viewing and very accurate tracking is possible. DC motor linear drive screw (left) equatorial platform controlled by an H.O. Train power pack - very close to the design of Warren Peters (see below). My latest equatorial plarform (lower left) has a north cylindrical bearing and an axial south bearing. It is driven by a rollerblade wheel that contacts the north runner directly. It is powered by a stepper motor that turns a 10:1 reduction gear that is controlled by a microstepping controller.
A second stepper is used to make small corrections for errors in polar alignment and uses a ballscrew that has 3/4" of travel. The second axis is driven by a standard stepper controller.
The scope (100 lbs of load) sits flat north to south and rotates 15-degrees east to west. It can fast forward, fast rewind, fast correct, and slow correct (see drawing of indexer / hand controller). A second hand controller is used for the second axis. This equatorial platform puts an axial bearing through the center of Warren Peters' south cylindrical bearing (see Warren's link below). Details - Stepper Driven Platform with design sheets for both Warren Peters' and Chuck Shaw's directions.

While software can reside on a microcontroller, it is my style to execute it on a laptop, allowing the hardware to be simple and flexible. In addition, a laptop has sufficient computing power and a full bodied user interface, so that adequate attention may be given to precise tracking (sub arcsecond over many minutes), precise goto (35 arcsecond rms from horizon to horizon), and all encompasing error correcting routines. My software also tends towards straightforward text interfaces, as complex graphical environments are hard to operate in the dark and injurious to night vision. Finally, the ease of developing software and getting bug fixes and enhancements out to users the next evening should not be underestimated for laptop and PC platforms.

Don't forget to stop in at the places who make the telescopes! If the information you dig up leaves you feeling more confused, think about joining a local astronomy club. Some are free, others have a low annual membership fee.
      • You will meet many other people at the meetings who already have telescopes. They can give you advice and give you ideas of costs, portability, and dealers in close surrounding areas.
      • Almost every club hosts star parties in which members who have telescopes bring them along. This gives you a chance to look through a variety of different scopes. It also lets you see what kind of size you are willing to tote around.
      • It allows you to interact with other people who have the same interest. This is a fantastic way to make new friends.
      • I've heard of a few clubs that rent telescopes to their members for a nightly charge. I have no idea how much, but it would be worth looking into.

You've Decided to Buy First, get familiar with the sky. Can you find the Andromeda galaxy? What kinds of nebulas are there in the different constellations? It is best to buy a book that includes descriptions and star charts for the beginner. Also, subscribe to a popular astronomy magazine. Most of them are aimed directly at the back yard observer.

This site will introduce you to a telescope for contemporary times, when wonderful optics crash headlong into the spreading problem of light pollution. Imagine a 12.5" telescope in your passenger seat, or an 18" scope in the back seat of any car, and imagine a design which does not compromise on shielding or rigidity. Say goodbye to 3/4" ply and find the best spots in the dark country sky. Purpose How big a scope can you transport and hand carry? Mine... To share my research, design and developments in the realm of ultra-portable, maximum-use, state-of-the-art starware. This page is intended for those who already own telescopes and understand the basics of Newtonian optical systems. My scope designs have grown out of an obsession with visual astronomy. If that is your interest, then please read on. 12.5" scope packed for car transport. Yours... You love stargazing and your current scope is slowing you down with it's bulk, it's weight, it's complexity and it's sticky bearings. Or perhaps you are ready for an increase in aperture but fear it will become an immovable object. You want a durable ultra-light scope with optics you choose and smooth, well-damped motions. You are curious about LITEBOX. Background 18" and 12.5" scopes in the back of a van.
