More Geographical Applications The discipline of Geography, like Anthropology, is divided into sub-disciplines. Some of these sub-disciplines are listed below with brief examples of how they can be applied to the study of the Civil War:
  • Cultural Geography: What are the cultural and geographic characteristics of the categories of identity: "North" and "South?" How do we, today, attach meaning to Civil War "places?" Economic Geography: Examine the North's production resources and capital versus that of the South.
How does geography (land and water resources) influence mode of production and distribution? Why and how did military strategy dictate the targeting of geographic regions based on economics? (see Mississippi River, Shenandoah Valley).
  • Historical Geography: How have landscapes been manipulated since the Civil War by battles, railroads, cemeteries, and monuments? Military Geography: Military Geography of the Civil War How can landscape (natural and man-made, i.e., rivers and fences) influence battle outcomes? (see Fredericksburg)
