parts of the country, and tennessee is the preventive measures, including exerciseand nutrition, to reduce 208 is pending before the health, Education, Labor
http://frist.senate.gov/2002/health/womens.cfm
Womens Health
  • Women in Tennessee have a higher than national average of deaths from heart disease, cancer, stroke, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and higher than national averages for illness risk factors such as being overweight, being physically inactive, and having high cholesterol. In 1998, Tennessee had higher rates of diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and stroke among women than the nation as a whole. According to the CDC, women in the rural South are more likely to die of heart disease than those in other parts of the country, and Tennessee is the 13th highest ranking state in women’s heart deaths, with 435 per 100,000 from 1991-1995. Senator Frist introduced and passed Public Law 105-340, the Women’s Health Research and Prevention Amendments of 1998, in the 105th Congress to increase awareness of some of the most pressing diseases and health issues facing women and to highlight the critical role played by our public health agencies play in improving women's health. This law reauthorizes programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, osteoporosis, as well as research into the aging processes of women. P. L. 105-340 also reauthorizes several programs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including the National Center for Health Statistics, the National Program of Cancer Registries, the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, the Centers for Research and Demonstration of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. CDC's programs provide critical health services in each of our States and in our communities to detect, prevent, and diagnose diseases such as breast and cervical cancer.
