Hamblen County Community Information General Information / Education / Medical / Entertainment In the late 1700’s we were the midway points on the main road between New Orleans and Baltimore. Today, the famous "Buffalo Trail" is a scenic highway connecting historic Cumberland Gap with downtown Morristown. Davy Crockett grew up here. His father owned and operated a tavern, during the Civil War; several strategic battles were fought in and around Morristown. The house that severed as the headquarters for Confederate General James Longstreet still stands. In 1769 a rapid westward movement occurred after the first settlement in Tennessee. Hamblen County lies directly in the path of this expansion. By 1782 Hamblen County had its first settlers. By 1860 the people of the area were focusing on a creation of a new county. Colonels I.P. Haun and Mark M Murrell, with an unknown gentleman, were discussing the problems that they, along with others faced when it came to the transportation, government, and communication of the county seats being so far apart. It led to the ideas that became the nucleus for the creation of a new county. Many petitions began to circulate among the citizens asking for the area to be recognized as a new county. The petitions were to be presented at the General Assembly. The new county was to include the land of Grainger County lying south of the Holston River, and Jefferson County land that was over eleven miles northeast of Dandridge. On April 15, 1870, a plot of the proposed new county was submitted. The county was formed by May 31, 1870.

Report of the Coalition for Evidence-Based Policy 11-02
27pp: This coalition is comprised of several notables in the area of education history and research. The report is a recommendation to the US DOE, highlighting the importance of randomized controlled trials in education research, but also highlights some other findings that illustrate how difficult disseminating and implementing things “that work” is in practice. For instance, the report notes research conducted in the ‘90s on whole school reform models: in ’98, 29% of schools receiving funds for WSR adopted models that the American Institutes for Research (AIR) rated as having “strong” or “promising” evidence of effectiveness. In 01-02, just 18% of schools receiving funds adopted a strong or promising model although the legislation requires the models be based on “rigorous research and effective practices” similar to NCLB requirements.

to unify its educational efforts, the tennessee Baptist Convention Association ofColleges and schools granted Union of JacksonMadison County general Hospital
http://www.uu.edu/union/about/history.htm
History
Jackson Male Academy, founded in 1823 shortly after the opening of West Tennessee for settlement, was chartered by the legislature in 1825, making it the earliest school whose roots are linked with what later became the Southern Baptist Convention. Meanwhile, after years of discussion and the raising of an endowment, the Baptist General Assembly of Tennessee in 1848 established Union University at Murfreesboro, near the geographical center of the state. Union University came upon hard times when in 1859 its highly respected president, Dr. Eaton, died and when during the Civil War its campus was badly damaged. It reopened in 1868 only to close again in 1873, largely because of its financial condition and an epidemic of cholera. After a major fire in 1912, several new buildings were constructed, including the centerpiece of the campus for the next 60 years, Barton Hall. In 1948 the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools granted Union University its original accreditation. In 1962, at the request of local physicians, Union developed a nursing program with the assistance of Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. On May 5 , 1925, high school science teacher John Scopes was arrested for teaching evolution in one of Tennessee's public schools. Scopes had agreed to act as defendant in a case intended to test Tennessee's new law prohibiting the teaching of evolution in its public schools. On May 4, the day before Scopes's arrest, the Chatanooga Times had run an ad in which the American Civil Liberties Union offered to pay the legal fees of a Tennessee teacher who was willing to act as a defendant in a test case. Several Dayton residents hatched a plot at a local drugstore. They hoped that a trial of this type would bring much needed publicity to the tiny town of Dayton.
