The Office of Medical Professions Advisement (MPA) operates under the auspices of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at East Tennessee State University. East Tennessee State University is fully in accord with the belief that educational and employment opportunities should be available to all eligible persons without regard to age, sex, color, race, religion, national origin, or disability. TBR 210-013-00 1M FUNCTIONS OF THE MPA OFFICE MISSION
The mission of the Office of Medical Professions Advisement is to provide information, academic advisement, and other support functions to students who wish to be admitted to professional schools in medically-related disciplines. Among those disciplines are medicine, osteopathic medicine, physician/surgeon assistant, podiatry, optometry, veterinary medicine, and chiropractic. The Director of the Office of Medical Professions Advisement is Dr. Lattie F. Collins.
THE COMPETITIVE APPLICANT
Most professional schools have many more applicants than can be accommodated in their classes. They select the best (in their judgment) of those applicants for admission to their programs. Thus admission to professional schools becomes a "competitive" process. Every year many students are unsuccessful in gaining admission to the professional school of their choice even though they meet the basic (minimum) requirements for admission. These students are not "unqualified," but they are not as "well-qualified" as other applicants-i.e., they are not as "competitive."

Public Speaking Contest during January and February, 2003. Extension 4-H Agent Joseph Donaldson reports that all speeches focused on a person of character or one or more of the Six Pillars. The winning speakers came to the county contest on February 24, attended by about 300 youths, parents, and others. “Some day, wherever you are in the world,” Donaldson told the audience, “when people hear ‘Giles County, Tennessee,’ they'll say, ‘That's a place where character counts.’” The Giles County CC! Coalition has been meeting since November, 2002, and this event was its first countywide project. The group, Donaldson noted later, “plans to build on its success to realize its mission of making Giles County, Tennessee a place of character.”

92. East Tennessee Children's Hospital - Child Life
staff works with Human Animal Bond In tennessee to provide to patients in the hospital'sgeneral medical units in kindergarten classes in Knox County's schools.
http://www.etch.com/childlife.cfm
It's much more than playtime
Step inside the doors of Children's Hospital, and you're likely to see staff, or perhaps volunteers, in different departments playing with patients. They are all enjoying themselves immensely, as they paint, color, play games, have story time or play with toy medical kits. On the surface, it appears to just be a lot of fun. But it goes much deeper than that. The Child Life Department at Children's Hospital is responsible for coordinating these play opportunities for patients as a way of helping children cope with their hospitalization. The staff of the department is focused on doing what is most "therapeutically appropriate" for the child. In other words, it may be play, but it has a very important purpose. Play is a natural part of childhood; it is a child's way to work and to learn, and it is vital to normal development. Consequently, it is something that needs to continue even during a child's hospitalization. The play and interaction between a patient and a Child Life staff member may be intended as a diversion from the challenges of a hospitalization. It may be for distraction when a child is having a procedure, such as the placement of an IV line. Play may be used to educate the patient, helping to prepare him or her for the upcoming placement of the IV line, how and why it will be done, and what to expect. Play also helps the Child Life staff to learn and understand what fears the child has so they can focus on those issues and try to reassure the child. The tools used during these interactions appear to the patient to be just everyday toys bubbles, paper and crayons, oil and water toys, for example. By assessing the child through play, the Child Life specialist can gain insight into ways to help the child cope with the hospital experience.
