White House Sought to Soften Anti-Terrorism Legislation in Support of Tobacco Companies
By Maud S. Beelman WASHINGTON, Nov. 29 – The Bush administration sought to use anti-terrorism legislation, rushed through Congress in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, to shield U.S. tobacco companies from foreign lawsuits alleging cigarette smuggling and money laundering. The White House backed a tobacco industry proposal that would have blocked foreign governments from using U.S. courts to go after corporate tax cheats. Canada, the European Union and the governors of Colombia have filed federal civil racketeering lawsuits, seeking billions of dollars in lost revenue and damages from the world’s largest tobacco companies. The suits allege the companies smuggled their cigarettes to evade taxes and duties on their products.

Will the threat of terrorist attacks subside after the Iraq war?
No one can say. There were fears that al-Qaeda or other terror groups might launch attacks against American civilians while U.S. resources and official attention were focused on the war. In fact, no such attacks have occurred, and U.S. officials are reported to be considering easing some security measures imposed in the weeks before the war began.

Nationalism and its Discontents
In the wake of Osama bin Laden's global religious terrorism
old-fashioned nationalism is looking better and better. By Michael Lind How did educated Westerners come to make enemies of an inspiration that has changed the lives of billions of people?" Robert H. Wiebe writes at the beginning of his eloquent and profound new study of the phenomenon of nationalism, Who We Are. During World War I, American progressives like Woodrow Wilson viewed national self-determination as one of the building blocks of a new, more humane global order. "But disillusionment after the First World War turned to revulsion after the Second, and at mid-century Western intellectuals dug in to battle the nationalist spirit." September 11 ended the era of post-national liberal utopianism that began with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Today, talk of a Manichaean struggle between the forces of enlightened globalization-represented, depending on your politics, by multinational corporations or nongovernmental organizations-and reactionary nationalism seems archaic. Now, the greatest threat to liberal civilization seems to come not from secular nationalism, but from transnational religious fundamentalism. International banking, instead of promoting western values, has been manipulated by anti-Western terrorists. The military and the police, those instrumentalities of the allegedly obsolete nation-state, suddenly seem more important to world order than footloose corporations, international investors, and transcontinental lobbies for human rights and the environment.

During his 2003 State of the Union Address, the President outlined progress in the war on terrorism and announced new initiatives in the fight. Since September 11, America has:
  • Disrupted terrorist networks, removed key leaders, and arrested more than 3,000 terrorists in many countries. Created the Department of Homeland Security to safeguard our citizens, intensified security at our borders and ports of entry and posted more than 50,000 federal screeners in airports.
The President also outlined initiatives to defend the safety of our people and the hopes of mankind by confronting the international HIV/AIDS Pandemic, guarding against bio-terrorism through Project BioShield, improving intelligence capabilities through the Terrorist Threat Integration Center and disarming Saddam Husein.

The opposite of terrorism is a way of looking at the world based on
  • recognizing that all terrorists share a few basic assumptions exploring the opposites of those assumptions acting to create a world that is based on those opposites
We created this site because we found it useful to ponder the question “ what is the opposite of terrorism. ” We found that simply asking the question often helps us move away from the feelings of panic and powerlessness that terrorism can cause. Acting on the answers helped us become the heroes we always thought we were. Sometimes the actions are internal, in the realm of personal growth. Sometimes they are social, in the realm of interpersonal relations or social action. And sometimes they are political. So we wanted to share the good news. We hope you find this site interesting and informative. Please

September 12, 2001 Posted: 1:41 PM EDT (1741 GMT) Students at Hightower High School in Houston, Texas, react to news of the terrorist attacks in the United States on Tuesday ATLANTA, Georgia (CNNSB) Students around the nation reacted to the terrorist attack against American landmarks in New York City and Washington, D.C. with dismay and confusion. "The fact that all this is happening hasn't even begun to sink in yet," said Angela Sczypta, 16, of Brownsville, Pennsylvania. "I am sitting in my classroom with the television on, and we are discussing what happened, but I still yet can't believe it. "All I know is that this is going to change everything and nothing will ever be the same... I don't know if I could ever understand why this had to happen," she said.

The US is winding down its hunt for Bin Laden and his virtual state
Richard Norton-Taylor

Tony Blair, trying not to look triumphant as he was flanked by the Afghan leader Hamid Karzai and surrounded by British troops at Bagram airbase on Monday, roundly dismissed those who were sceptical about what military action could achieve. As American bombers continue to bomb targets identified as remnants of Taliban and al-Qaida forces, and their ammunition dumps, risking more civilian casualties, he added that the war would not be over until Osama bin Laden and Mullah Omar were caught.
