Abstract: During the last couple of years much attention has been given to an important ecological problem, namely forest wildfire [1]. In a recent report [5] it has been shown that, starting with very simple assumptions, a Voronoi diagram structure [4], [3] naturally emerges as the landscape geometry generated by the spread out of forest wildfire. In this paper, we provide a tool that may help people locate refuge zones inside a forest fire using a Voronoi growth model. Forest fires is a complex problem ... (Update)

    Clebrating Math Through Literature
E dmonton Catholic Schools are celebrating math by organizing a full or half day of activities centred around math and literature. Students become actively involved in a variety of math-related activities through exposure to a good piece of fiction or nonfiction that is related to a math concept. They experience math in a motivating and experiential way and, through literature, see math in a context. Following is an outline for organizing a day around "math and literature."
    • It is best to plan separate activities for Divisions 1 and 2 with some activities that overlap. You may choose to do Division 1 on a separate day as well.
    • The size of the group should not exceed 15 or 16 so as to make sure that all students are having success with the activity. The number of groups will determine the number of activities, although duplicating activities can be done successfully.
    • Each activity should last about 40 minutes. Groups will move from one activity to another.

It helps math students create and solve their own problems. In documentary segments, the programs show men and women wrestling with problems in the real world. Silent comedy segments demonstrate how problems cannot be solved by someone who in not thinking, but trying to force the problem to yield an answer. The Topic:
Tessellations Easier - A tessellation is created when a shape is repeated over and over again. All the figures fit onto a flat surface exactly together without any gaps or overlaps.
Harder - A tessellation is a repeating pattern composed of interlocking shapes (usually polygons) that can be extended infinitely. The tiling for a regular (or periodic) tessellation is done with one repeated congruent regular polygon covering a plane in a repeating pattern without any openings or overlaps. Remember 'regular' means the sides of the polygon are all the same length, and 'congruent' means that the polygons fitted together are all the same size and shape. A semi-regular (or non-periodic) tessellation is formed by a regular arrangement of polygons, identically arranged at every vertex point.

Computers Are No Different Than Blackboards By Vickie Guymon June 12, 1997 In Wednesday’s Salt Lake Tribune there was an article "School Computers: Little Bang for Buck." The article was a reprint from the Los Angeles Times. The writer of the article fails to realize how computers in schools are tools to be used by professional teachers in facilitating learning. The writer of the Times article is not the only one among us who needs enlightenment. Others complain that the new technology in schools is not heightening students’ learning and that it is a waste of time and money. "Using their free afternoons to search the Internet and download files, the students in Fairfax High School’s computer lab could be poster children for public education’s newest infatuation." This example quoted from the Times article is not an example of education or teaching or instruction; it is an example of what kids, left alone with computers, might do. Computers by themselves are not going to stimulate learning or enhance achievement. Computers are no different than any other tool educators use in their classrooms. Another example: Kids left alone with a blackboard. What happens? They draw on it. Not much learning going on there; yet the blackboard/chalkboard has been an important tool used by many educators over some years to stimulate mighty learning.

A wide range of projects are synergistically studied as an alternative approach to the usual method of specialization. Enersearch develops earth profiting life technologies which harmoniusly integrate facts of sciences, beauties of arts and ideals of ethical disciplines. Enersearch is now in the slow process of publishing it's works on the www. This will consist of transcribing hand drawn sketches and notebook data from the 1980's to the more recent CAD renderings dating from the 90's.
