A half-smiling portrait of a deceased radio preacher steals the attention of all who enter the small lobby of Mountain Park Baptist Boarding Academy.
It's the visage of Lester Roloff, who is seen by several Missouri reform schools as a hero in the battle to bring wayward teens to Jesus, while fending off the demons of government control.
Mountain Park's Web site proudly says that the school's founder was personally trained by the minister. Elsewhere in Missouri, Agape Boarding School and Thanks to Calvary say they are not Roloff schools, but their leaders praise the pastor's work and display photos of him. Agape has named one of its dorms in Roloff's honor.
Roloff, who died in a plane crash in 1982, is perhaps best known for his "Family Altar" radio ministry, which was once broadcast from Corpus Christi, Texas, to more than 140 stations.
As his radio ministry grew, the fundamentalist Baptist preacher began reaching out to drug-addicted men and rebellious teens. By the late 1960s, he was taking in dozens of wayward girls, most of whom were pregnant.

After the first semester, some driving privileges are awarded to students who have demonstrated mature, responsible behavior. Allen Academy provides transportation to and from airports, bus stations, medical appointments, school activities, and religious services upon request.
Students may go home as often as 3 out of 4 weekends per month. Once a month, Allen Academy has a closed weekend in which boarding students must remain on campus. This weekend is often the weekend before finals or a special event such as a school dance. The Program is overseen by the Boarding Director who resides on campus. Two resident counselors reside in the dorm and one remains on duty throughout the day and night.

77. I Big Bend High School A Texas-Sized Challenge /I - Texas
Parents in this remote part of West texas have contended with challenges in Otherssent their highschool age students to boarding schools in distant cities.

- Texas Library Journal - Winter 96
Big Bend High School: A Texas-Sized Challenge
Julie Hallmark Dateline: Study Butte, Texas. In May 1996, newspapers from Oregon to New York proclaimed that the longest bus ride in the United States for high school students was coming to an end. For years, students from Study Butte, Terlingua, Panther Junction, Big Bend National Park, and Lajitas had been commuting by bus to Alpine to attend high school, a round trip of 179.6 miles. This year for the first time ever, those students would have their own high school. I was delighted to have the opportunity to visit my favorite part of Texas recently and learn first hand about the exciting events taking place in and around Terlingua. The newly incorporated Big Bend High School (BBHS) serves residents from an area of 2,280 square miles in the southern part of Brewster County. The total population of 600 in this vast region includes 151 students in pre-kindergarten to 12th grade. Of these, 33 are the high school students who make up the student body of the new school. Some of these students still have very significant commutes, often on dirt roads, to get to Terlingua from their homes, but certainly enjoy an improvement over driving to Alpine and back every day. Parents in this remote part of West Texas have contended with challenges in educating their children since the early days of the big ranches. In the past, some families moved to Alpine temporarily until their children finished high school. Others sent their high-school age students to boarding schools in distant cities.
