Controversial boarding school buys Iowa site
The Utah nonprofit group hopes to open a facility for teenagers in the Keokuk building by spring. By JENNIFER DUKES LEE
Register Correspondent
The way is cleared for a boarding school for troubled teenagers to set up near Keokuk, despite objections from parents who say the schools are prisons where children are mistreated. Lee County officials have sold the former county home for $500,000 to a controversial Utah group wanting to expand its chain of boarding schools. The sale is expected to be completed within a week. The school could be operating by spring.

Abused Kids Fight Back
Dallas law firm that one millions from Catholic Church now sets sites on ISKCON
Windle Turley addressed the the Texas jury solemnly in his closing argument. "This case is about children, their innocence, their vulnerability, their love so generously given. I know it may not come easy for some of you to realize the importance and the consequence of the task you have undertaken. But your decisions will reach far beyond this room and this city. It is true, please believe me, that today you will begin to speak to the world about children." And speak the jury did, awarding us $120 million to 11 victims of Father Rudy Kos, priest of the Catholic Diocese of Dallas. The church appealed the civil suit, and settled in 1998. It included $23.4 million to the plaintiffs (mostly paid by the Church); a promise to change the handling of priests with known pedophile tendenciesKos had been reported to Church authorities years before anything was done to stop him; and an abject apology from the Bishop. In 1997, Kos faced additional criminal charges of sexual assault and indecency with a child. The Kos case was just one of hundreds since 1984 involving the Catholic Church worldwide resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars being paid out to victims of priests. It is part of a global movement in which children are demanding their rights to not be hit or molested, just as adults fought for and won those same rights long ago. Be it a march by grade schoolers on #10 Downing Street in England [Hinduism Today, July/August, 2000], revelations of childhood sexual abuse by parents, teachers or others, or protests over corporal punishment in home or school, children today are standing up and saying, "Enough!" They've gotten priests brought up on criminal charges, including Catholic Father James Porter [at right] who pleaded guilty in 1994 to over 40 counts of sexual abuse that occurred in the 1960s in Massachusetts and was charged with further crimes in other states.

MENNONITES The most recent Mennonite colonization in Texas began in 1977, when two groups of Mennonites purchased land in Gaines and Andrews counties near Seminole: Old Colony Mennonites and a less conservative group affiliated with the General Conference Mennonite Church. Both were descended from Old Colony Mennonites who had settled in Mexico in the 1920s. The Old Colony Mennonites believe in total separation from the outside world, use a Low German dialect, dress distinctively, and keep separate schools. Most of the colonists in Gaines and Andrews counties came from Mennonite communities in Chihuahua, Mexico, but some were from Canada. Despite their problems, the colonists persisted. In July 1984 an estimated 2,000 Mennonites lived in Gaines and Andrews counties, and about ten more families were scattered over a large area south of Stanton. Approximately ten families had moved to Lubbock, and an indeterminate but small number lived scattered in surrounding counties. Most of the Mennonite colonists made their living by farming or as skilled or semiskilled laborers. In 1982 there were four Mennonite churches and three schools in Seminole. Two of the schools were conducted in German, and the third was taught primarily in English with supplementary instruction in German. All of the schools were primary; secondary students attended public school or Mennonite boarding schools. In 1993 Mennonites from Mexico and Canada continued to immigrate to West Texas increasing the Mennonite population to 3,000. Those who have come after the 1980 dispensation still face immigration difficulties.

PARKER, QUANAH (ca. 1845-1911). Quanah Parker, the last chief of the Quahadi Comanche Indians, son of Peta Nocona and Cynthia Ann Parker, qv was born about 1845 near the Wichita Mountains in what is now Oklahoma. He was a major figure both in Comanche resistance to white settlement and in the tribe's adjustment to reservation life. Nomadic hunter of the Llano Estacado, qv leader of the Quahadi assault on Adobe Walls in 1874 ( see RED RIVER WAR), cattle rancher, entrepreneur, and friend of American presidents, Quanah Parker was truly a man of two worlds. The name Quanah means "smell" or "odor." Though the date of his birth is recorded variously at 1845 and 1852, there is no mystery regarding his parentage. His mother was the celebrated captive of a Comanche raid on Parker's Fort (1836) and convert to the Indian way of life. His father was a noted war chief of the Nocone band of the Comanches. Despite his mixed ancestry, Quanah's early childhood seems to have been quite unexceptional for his time and place. In 1860, however, Peta Nocona was killed defending an encampment on the Pease River against Texas Rangers qv under Lawrence Sullivan Ross.

Resource Guide Financing Your Education Ask the Advisor: Financing Your Education I am an undergraduate student thinking of applying to study in the USA. I have very good grades and test scores. Is it possible for me to get a full scholarship at a university? Answer: Unfortunately, there is very little aid available for international students at the undergraduate level at most schools: even top students can rarely find full funding. However, a few private schools may have funds available. Policies vary from school to school, and you should inquire directly to the International Admissions Office at each prospective school to find out the availability of funds. You should also be aware that financial aid is usually awarded according to a different time schedule than the admissions office uses for direct application approval, so if you are interested in financial aid, make sure that you indicate your interest in your initial request for information. Back to the Top How can I get financial aid that will help me to go to an American University? Are there any criteria to get a Research Assistantship or Teaching Assistantship?
