    General Information
Paying starts with planning. Please don't think that you can't afford to go to college. With the right planning, a college education is within reach for every Texas student. Below are answers to common questions about paying for college. How much does college actually cost?
The cost of a college education varies, depending on the college you select and whether you live at home or in an apartment or on campus. In Texas, the average price tag for a college degree (tuition and fees, room and board, books, transportation, and other expenses) ranges from a low of $5,796 (one year at a public community college) to a high of $30,938 (one year at a private college or university). Some colleges cost much less than the average; others will be higher. For information on private colleges and universities, visit the Texas Mentor Web site. What are the major costs of college? The cost of college can be broken down into two main categories:
  • Instruction and Facilities Costs
These costs at Public Colleges and Universities are normally paid through a combination of funding from Texas taxpayers, tuition and fees from students and other funding sources. Currently, students and parents pay only about 20 percent of the cost. The amount varies based on the type of school you go to (university, community college, or technical college).

CORNYN ANNOUNCES ATTORNEY GENERAL'S SCHOOL VIOLENCE PREVENTION TASK FORCE
State legislators, education, and law enforcement officials join AG in effort to prevent school violence
AUSTIN - Texas Attorney General John Cornyn and Education Commissioner Mike Moses today announced the formation of The Attorney General's School Violence Prevention task force comprised of state lawmakers, educators, law enforcement officials, and parents. The task force is charged with creating a series of recommendations so local school officials and parents can recognize the warning signs before students become violent. Members will also discuss ways school officials can respond effectively when violent acts occur in Texas schools. "I have formed the Attorney General's School Violence Prevention Task Force in cooperation with Mike Moses to bring together the best Texas resources in education and law enforcement," said Attorney General Cornyn. "Our challenge is not simply to have a crisis plan in place for every school district in Texas but to develop plans and programs that can prevent school violence," Cornyn added. "I have included parents and community leaders on my task force because children shouldn't hear the anti-school violence message from educators and law enforcement officials alone. That message needs to also come from parents, neighbors and our churches," said Attorney General Cornyn.

The reason Mr. Doud wants to get his message out about education is because while growing up in Minnesota, he was made fun of by other students. He just wanted to hurry and get out of school. He loved baseball and dreamed of becoming a major league player. Instead of playing, he was the team manager. He really started liking school when he became part of the speech team. He became very good and won many speech tournaments. The teacher motivated him and he realized that great teachers are the key to our future. Mr. Doud feels that technology is one of the greatest tools ever given to teachers! He pleaded for all teachers, no matter what the curriculum, to incorporate technology into student learning. He then read the following poem:

Welcome to SW-CPEH
We are one of thirteen Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Units (PEHSU's) located throughout the country in Canada, and in Mexico. The SW-CPEH provides services to health care providers, public health officials and the general public in EPA Region VI, which includes Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. We are based at The University of Texas Health Center at Tyler. Background Environmental hazards are among the top health concerns many parents have for their children. Further, a considerable number of national priority list sites exist in Region VI, making this concern more pressing. Parents may call upon pediatricians to address environmental concerns, but pediatricians typically receive little training in environmental health issues. In fact, little data exists regarding the long-term effects of chronic, low dose exposures or the unique susceptibility of children from infancy through adolescence. Mission To bridge the gap between the pediatric health care provider and the environmental health specialist to better serve children impacted by environmental exposures to potentially toxic agents. By sharing our expertise, we can better address questions about environmental exposure to potentially toxic agents.
