The word "history" comes from the Greek and Latin terms for "inquiring" and "knowing" and describes a branch of knowledge in which we seek to learn about human life over time. We debate concepts and theories about why humans have acted in specific ways, which leads us to ideas about society today. In fact, it is often present-day concerns that lead us to study the past, for we wish to know how we got where we are today. As we study history, we develop a deeper understanding of the past and present. As a result of the discipline's emphasis on human experience, a background in history provides students with the skills required for seeking out knowledge, analyzing complex issues, and presenting conclusions in a clear and thoughtful manner. The intellectual formation provided by a strong preparation in history is the basis for personal satisfaction and professional success in practically any area of human endeavor. Special Opportunities A major in history provides the liberal arts graduate with a strong foundation for personal and professional activities requiring original thinking, flexibility, analytical skills, strong writing skills, and the ability of dealing with both facts and interpretation. Texas Lutheran's history department offers specializations in liberal arts, public history, and pre-law.

Texas. American FactFinder (U.S. Census) Texas, the "Lone Star State"
    Abbreviation:
