Narrative of first phase development and an overview of long range plans University of North Texas Libraries
September 2002 Introduction The need for such a project evolves from three separate groups that will be affected by the project – Texas school children and teachers, historians, and Texas libraries and museums. The first group, Texas school children and teachers, is required by the Texas Department of Education’s Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) to study Texas history, especially in the fourth and seventh grades. All too frequently the textbooks for these studies are bland, at best. Few public school students or teachers have easy access to supplementary materials that can bring the subject of Texas history alive. Historians make up the second group. Currently, to view important primary source material, historians must be able to travel about the state to historical museums or library archives and rare book collections. An example that illustrates the difficulties experienced by researchers occurred when the UNT Libraries digitized the nineteenth century volumes of the Laws of Texas . Feedback from historians indicated that some had not seen the volumes until the digitized copies were placed online.

    37. The Portal To Texas History
At that time, phase two of the project will begin, in collaboration with texas librariesand museums, to create digital resources to support the study of Texas
    http://texashistory.unt.edu/
Home U.S. Federal State Local/Regional ... Help The Texas Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund awarded a competitive grant to the UNT Libraries to create a technical structure for a Web portal to Texas history materials. The grant in the amount of $197,410 will cover the cost of hardware and software to assist with discover, preservation, and file management for digital collections. The technical structure for the Portal will be completed by June 2003. At that time, phase two of the project will begin, in collaboration with Texas libraries and museums, to create digital resources to support the study of Texas history by K-12 students, historians, and other researchers. (8/02) Portal to Texas History Project Vision Statement The University of North Texas Library's Portal to Texas History Description of the Web Portal to Texas History Project:
    • The Portal will be the entry point on the Web for access to digital copies of important, original materials on the topic of Texas History. Examples include documents on the annexation of Texas, Fort Worth Stockyard historical records, pioneer journals, maps, and letters.

    39. Money Raised At Book Festival Helps Benefit Texas Libraries
Money raised at book festival helps benefit texas libraries. Chapter2 of the Texas Book Festival has been written, but work soon
    http://lubbockonline.com/news/110997/002-2689.htm
Money raised at book festival helps benefit Texas libraries Chapter 2 of the Texas Book Festival has been written, but work soon will begin on Chapter 3 - set for Nov. 13-15 next year. A collection of "excerpts" from Chapter 2, which had a two-day shelf life last weekend at the Capitol: °The Great Comanche Raid: "How's your mother?" I asked Sam Waring, who was selling rare books for Congress Avenue Booksellers in the exhibitor's tent and whose mother runs the public library in Comanche, a big-city quality operation in a small town. "Right now she's kinda down," he said. I immediately thought the worst. The way her son talked made me fearful that my friend Margaret Waring had developed some serious health problem. "The county zeroed out her book auisition budget for next year," he said, seeing the concern on my face. I was relieved to hear Margaret was still in good health, but knowing her, I understand how not having any public money to buy books for her library patrons would have her a bit less upbeat than normal. Margaret's dilemma is a perfect example of the importance of the Book Festival, which is about raising money for Texas libraries. Last year, 40 public libraries in the state were awarded $127,000 in grants from money raised by the festival. Hearing of Margaret's bad news at the festival was at least fitting. Maybe her library will qualify for a grant from money raised this year.
