LEGISLATIVE ISSUES NETWORK Call to Action: ESEA Reauthorization-Federal Library Legislation ATTENTION: School Library Media Specialists and all Library Supporters
SCHOOL LIBRARY FUNDING AT STAKE
Immediate Action Needed

The Senate may be considering the Elementary and Secondary Education Act reauthorization as early as next week. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) has worked hard to convince his colleagues to join him in sponsoring S. 237, Improving Literacy Through School Libraries Act. Your help is urgently needed to add more sponsors so that S. 237 can be added to ESEA reauthorization. Please call Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison at (202) 224-5922 and ask for her support for S. 237, contact the Natalie Adams in the Senator's office. Please act now. Negotiations are going on right now and Senators Lott, Jeffords and Kennedy need to hear from REPUBLICAN senators that money specifically needs to be allocated to school libraries. Talking Points:
  • Pre-readers, new readers and more proficient readers, in short, all students from K-12 need a wide selection of up-to-date reading material keyed to all levels of reading ability to learn to read well and to continue to enjoy reading.

http://dewey.chs.chico.k12.ca.us/colo.html
Advocates of school library media programs have long been convinced of the relationship between quality library media programs and academic achievement. Most studies of this relationship were conducted between 1959 and 1979, were limited in scope, and usually used a small number of subjects in a limited geographical area. This study was designed both to update the existing research and to examine the relationship between library media programs and student achievement.
