THAI CULTURE THAI CULTURE

Thailand is located at the meeting point of the two great cultural systems of Asia-Chinese and Indian. In everyday life, Chinese culture has mixed very well with the Thai, whereas in Thai court Culture, which have been based mainly on Buddhism and Brahmanism, India has exerted a strong influence.
Thai culture can be divided in to 3 aspects: linguistic culture, court culture, and traditional culture.
LINGUISTIC CULTURE
The Thai language, or Phasa Thai, basically consists of monosyllable words, whose meanings are complete by themselves. Its alphabet was created by King Ramkhamhaeang the Great in 1283 by modelling it on the ancient Indian alphabets of Sanskrit and Pali through the medium of the old Khmer characters. After a history of over 700 years, the Thai alphabet to day comprises 44 letters (including 2 obsolete ones), representing 20 consonant phonemes and 15 vowel signs, denoting 22 vowels, diphthongs and triphthongs.
As Thai is a tonal language with five different tones, it often confuses foreigners who are unused to this kind of language. For example, they have difficulty in distinguishing these 3 words from each other - àÊ×Í (suea, with rising tone), àÊ×èÍ (suea, low tone) and àÊ×éÍ (sues, falling tone) which means a tiger, a mat and clothes respectively.

    Thai Culture
Of course, the vast majority (95%) of Thais are Buddhists. Although there are many Malay decent Muslims in the south, and even hill tribe (Karen) in the north and western Burmese border area. The traditional Thai greeting is the "wai" (like putting your hands together to pray, but higher and lowering your head). And all Thai's love their King and find any detrimental action or word against either him, or their religion particularly offensive, even provocative. So you should always pay utmost respect to both. This includes standing up straight and smart whenever you hear the national anthem. Plus always respecting religious leaders and priests. It may be "OK" to hold onto your seat in a bus crowded full with old and pregnant women. But if a priest enters, you had better give up your seat! Although most westerners find such things alien, even oppressive. The Thais do this out of respect, even love, not command. And you should be very careful to honor their undoubted grace by following suit.

Best of Thailand Craft l Culture l Fruits l Games l Nang Yai Culture Shadow Puppet Plays Very seldom seen these days except in the south are the shadow puppet plays known as "Nang Yai" and "Nang Thalung". Nang Thalung is the more popular of the two where puppets crafted from cow hide have strings attached for better character movements. The puppeteers then move these along with the music and comical dialogs. Meanwhile, Nang Yai have become rather rare these days and the puppets are larger in size than those of the Nang Thalung. Traditional Thai Music Traditional Thai music is a blending of musical elements from a number of cultures, such as Chinese, Khmer, and Indian. This applies not only to the instruments but also to the melodies. Therefore Thai music can be said to be derivative. Notwithstanding that fact, Thai music has developed into a distinct form, which is regarded as belonging to the 'high' musical cultures of Southeast Asia.

Northern Thailand plays host to numerous cultures and lifestyles. Even in the capital of Chiang Mai, a modern city, you can see tribal hawkers and stallholders rubbing shoulders with lowland Thai traders and vegetable sellers. Such kaleidoscope of culture is evident in the colourful festivals, foods and beliefs of these varied folk.

    The cultures of Thailand
    By PHYA ANUMAN RAJADHON
For cultural purposes, Thailand may be divided into four areas, namely the Northern, the North_Eastern, the Central and the Southern areas.
    The Northern area
    The North_Eastern area
    The Central area
    The Southern area
    History of Thailand's culture
N ow for a bit of history to complete the bird's eye view of Thailand's culture. A thousand or more years ago, most of Thailand apart from the southern area in the Malay Peninsula, was under the domination of the hinduized Mon-speaking people of Dvaravati (457-657 A.D.) and the Khmer or Cambodian Empires (957-1257 AD); while the Malay Peninsula was under the suzerainty of Srivijaya, the hinduized Sumatran Empire (657-1157 A.D.). During these times the Thai, as a race, emigrated gradually from their home in Southern China into the Indo-Chinese Peninsula.
During these times many off-shoots of the Thai tribes Siam or Palized into Samadesa. There is no doubt that the Thai had been before that time already in the land of the Mon and The Khmer Empire but they were only a minority and formed themselves into semi-independent states under the suzerainty of these empires. Traditionally these Thai who settled in Central Thailand or Siam were called Thai Noi or Lesser Thai in contrast to Thai Yai or Major Thai who are the Shans of Burma. Traditionally the Thai Noi or Lesser Thai came from the north of Thailand. It was therefore presumed that they were the Northern Thai of Chiang-mai with the Laos or the Thai of Mekhong basin partly mixed; but to me the so-called Thai Noi or Lesser Thai had in their melting pot in no less degree the Thai Yai or Major Thai i.e. the Shan too.
