Hilltribes of Northern Thailand
Hilltribe peoples migrated over 100 years ago from the southern part of China into Laos, Myanmar (Burma), Vietnam and Thailand. They have preserved their way of life with little change for over thousand years. Comprising seven major tribes, KAREN HMONG (MEO), YAO LISU LAHU LAWA and AKHA , each has its own distinct culture, religion, language, art and colourful style of dress, these people make their homes in the highlands. The main profession of all these tribes is farming. All the tribes are hospitable and welcome visitors to their villages, providing them with the opportunity to see and experience their way of life. Beside the 7 main tribes, their are also some rare and smaller tribes living in northern Thailand, such as the PALONG KHAMU THINS and MLABRI For information about the PADUANG, the "Long Necks", please go to our Mae Hong Sorn section.

Journey Back Through Time
Thailand is such a unique country that only by travelling back through a glorious past can one truly begin to understand it. The Grand Palace is the site of all important royal ceremonies. It contains the greatest concentration of traditional Thai art and architecture. Over the centuries Thailand's culture has left its mark on the landscape. Thousands of Buddhist temples, the ancient ruins of Isaan (Thailand's North-east) and the magnificent temples and palaces of Sukhothai and Ayuthaya tell of an ancient culture that continues to enchant visitors even today. Aisawan Thipaya Pavilion, Bang Pa-In Summer Palace. The intricate, multi-tiered roofs and golden spires of this Pavilion reflect the quintessential Thai architectural style. Thailand has never been colonised by a western power and has retained its independence for over 800 years. Continuing the traditions which have been part of everyday life for centuries, the country has evolved a unique cultural heritage. Many of these traditions and beliefs have been influenced by Buddhism the main religion of Thailand, and and can be seen in both the art and architecture around the country.

http://www.boi.go.th/english/thailand/culture.html
The origins of the Thais is a much debated topic among academics. Three decades ago it could be said with presumed certainty that the Thais originated in northwestern Szechuan in China about 4,500 years ago and later migrated south to their present homeland. However, this theory has been altered by the discovery of remarkable prehistoric artefacts in the village of Ban Chiang in the Nong Han District of Udon Thani Province in the Northeast of Thailand. These include evidence of bronze metallurgy dating back 3,500 years, as well as other indications of a culture far more sophisticated than previously believed by archaeologists. It now appears that Thais might have originated here in Thailand and later scattered to various parts of Asia, including some parts of China. "Siam" is the name by which the country was known to the world until 1939 and again between 1945 and 1949. On May 11, 1949, an official proclamation declared that the country would henceforth be known as "Thailand." The word "Thai" means "Free," and therefore "Thailand" means "Land of the Free."

    Thailand - Culture Thai Kingdom
Thailand is very much a Kingdom, proud of it's status and it's monarch - every morning and evening the flag is honoured and the national anthem sung. Thais are extremely patriotic and the King is a real figurehead.
King Bhumipol Adulyadej, 9th of the Chakri dynasty is the longest reigning monarch in the world, having been crowned in 1950. His popularity is well founded - during his long reign he has been seen as a symbol of hope and protector for this rapidly developing nation, setting up projects in far-flung provinces and personally intervening in 1992 to heal rifts caused by pro-democracy protests and shootings.
Famous kings in Thai history include :- King Ramkamhaeng, Sukhothai 1280-1317; U-Thong, Ayutthaya Narai 1657-88 (many Europeans visited his court); Rama 1, Chakri dynasty (moved the capital to Bangkok Mongkut and made famous in the film 'The King and I' starring Yul Brynner); Rama V (Chulalongkorn) and Vl (instigated the process of modernisation and westernisation).

Most people in Sri Lanka, Burma, Cambodia, and Laos practice Theravada Buddhism. Other religions include:
  • Hinduism
  • Christianity
  • Taoism
  • Animism
  • Islam
Theravada Buddhism was actually the established religion. There were only a few differences between the religion, and the state. The ruler of Thai was required to be a Buddhist.
Some places in Thailand are different.
  • In CENTRAL THAILAND, the priests were selected and honored by the king of Thailand. Only if they were "praiseworthy" enough.
  • In NORTHEAST THAILAND, the priests were selected by the people. The people had to honor them.
    FOOD IN THAILAND
The food in Thailand is very healthy. A lot of the ingriedents are herbs and spices. Some foods in Thailand actually make you feel better. It may clear your throat and get rid of your fever. Peanuts and coconuts are mostly in the curries.

Thailand - the Culture and People
Thailand has become one of the prime travel destinations in Southeast Asia and acts as a travel gateway to Southeast Asia. The Kingdom of Thailand, with a population of about 60,000,000, is located in Southeast Asia and shares borders with Myanmar (Burma) on the west and northwest, Laos on the east and northeast, Cambodia (Kampuchea) on the southeast, and Malaysia on the south.
The Gulf of Thailand is on the southeastern coast and the Andaman Sea on the southwest. Bangkok is the The Kingdom's capitol and major seaport. It has an official population over 6,000,000 and was established in 1782.
With a land area of 513,000 square kilometers Thailand stretches approximately 2,500 km. from north to south. East to west it spans 1,250 km. The eastern coastline is estimated at 1,800 km. and the western coastline along the Indian Ocean is 860 km. Mountainous areas dominate much of Thailand's terrain, Ranges stretch to most areas of the country.
The Korat Plateau bordering the Mekong River covers about one third. The main river within Thailand is the Chao Phraya and flows through an alluvial plain that lies between the central and western mountain ranges. The central plain along with a fertile delta near Bangkok is highly productive and provides much of the agricultural product of Thailand. This central plain is also the most densely populated area of The Kingdom.

Photo: Pagoda in Thailand Though the Thai independent history in Southeast Asia stretches back roughly only 1000 years, Thailand is exceptionally rich in many aspects of culture. Originally influenced by India Sri Lanka and China , Siamese culture has evolved into something unique. A predominant position is occupied by architecture and sculptural art As was pointed out by the renowned Thai-Italian art professor Silpa Bhirasri in his essay on Thai Buddhist Art (published 1959 by the Thai Fine Arts Department), Indian colonies existed in Thailand from the beginning of the Buddhist era. For centuries these colonies influenced the less cultured peoples of Indochina, a process which went on for more than 1500 years . Afterwards, in the 13th century A.D. the Indian cultural expansion in Southeast Asia was checked by the Muslim invasion into India while Chinese power started to have an important ascendancy over the people of Indochina. The Chinese influence found cultures already firmly established , some of them even having already ended their historical cycle. Thailand retained Indian culture, but because it emerged as an independent nation in the 13th century A.D. just when the Chinese political power started to play an important role, many features of

    Overview
The teeming city of Bangkok is an eclectic mixture of the old and the new, the ancient and the modern. The city is a crossroads for people of different regions, nations and even continents. Yet Bangkok’s cultural identity is as strong as ever, closely linked to the national pillars which have prevailed since ancient times—Buddhism, monarchy and nationhood, the unique characteristics that make up ‘Thainess’. The religion practiced my most people in Bangkok is Buddhism, a way of living based on the Tripitaka, an ancient Pali script of the Lord Buddha’s teachings. Religion, along with monarchy and nationhood, is regarded as one of the three strengths of the nation, and is represented on the Thai flag by the color white. Buddhism practiced in Thailand incorporates elements of Hinduism, Brahmanism and Mahayana Buddhism. Belief in astrology and superstition is also widespread. Buddhists believe in a cycle of death and reincarnation in which each life has a direct influence on the next. Buddhists may escape this cycle only by achieving enlightenment or ‘nirvana’, by following a code of morals, meditation and ultimately achieving wisdom.

About Our Project Thailand Setting the Table Unique Food Unique Celebration ... About Our classroom was organized into teams who individually researched a variety of interesting elements about Thailand's culture - unique foods, customs, traditions and celebrations. A picture of our class working on our individual team topics is on the right. Some interesting things we found out: When walking the streets of Bangkok, it is common to see lots of food being served on the streets. There are carts of fresh fruit everywhere (excellent pineapple) and people are even cooking out on the streets or in their windows of their homes and shops in hibachi-like stoves. Their fruits are very different from those found in the U.S. and they even vary from place to place
across Thailand. Other things of interest: Uni Arriniyonsak, a native of Thailand and manager of Busara's, a local Thai restaurant, (and her translator, Josie) visited our class and spoke to us about Thai cooking customs. She brought us samples of fresh herbs and other ingredients - basil, lemon, ginger and peppers. She explained that one reason Thai food is served family style is so that everything can be served fresh and at the same time and then shared on individual plates
This is a picture of our class in front of the fountain in red square at the heart of Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA.
