Thailand Hotel Guide The area between the 6th and the 20th line of latitude (see Full Map of Thailand ) that is now known as Thailand has since ancient times been the home of highly developed civilizations, long before it was "discovered" in the 16th century by Europeans (as a matter of fact, even before the Thai themselves arrived there). The earliest evidence of settlement is the Ban Chiang culture that existed in the 5th century B.C. in the Northeast of Thailand (many remains have been found in a small village near Udon Thani). The Ban Chiang people (their exact identity has not yet been determined) knew bronze, iron, ceramics, and ceremonial burials. They cultivated rice and kept domesticated animals. In the 3rd century A.D. they disappeared, for reasons still unknown today. Ancient Thailand (Mural at Wat Phra Kaew, Bangkok) 9 centuries later, from the 6th century A.D. on, the Mon culture flourished in Thailand. The Mon settled in the Menam Delta in the Central Plains and in the North (Haripunchai, now called Lamphun, was the capital of one of their most important kingdoms in the North) and brought Buddhism, Sanskrit, and many other Indian influences to Thailand. GEOGRAPHY
Size: Approximately 514,000 square kilometers. Topography: Chief topographic features include central plain dominated by Mae Nam (river) Chao Phraya and its tributaries. To northeast rises dry, undulating Khorat Plateau bordered on east by Mekong River. Mountains along northern and western borders with Burma extend south into narrow, largely rain-forested Malay Peninsula. Network of rivers and canals associated with northern mountains and central plain drain, via Chao Phraya, into Gulf of Thailand. Mae Nam Mun and other northeastern streams drain via Mekong into South China Sea. Soils vary. Topography and drainage define four regions: North, Northeast, Center, and South. Climate: Tropical monsoon climate. Southwest monsoons arriving between May and July signal start of rainy season lasting until October. Cycle reverses with northeast monsoon in November and December, ushering in dry season. Cooler temperatures give way to extremely hot, dry weather March through May. In general, rainfall heaviest in South, lightest in Northeast. Data as of September 1987

    Overview
Bangkok, capital city of Thailand, lies close to the mouth of the Chao Phraya River at the center of a fertile alluvial plain. With an area of 1,565.2 sq km, Bangkok ranks 68th in size out of the country's 76 provinces, but has the greatest population and population density of any province. It is surrounded by Samut Sakhon and Samut Prakan to the south, Nakhon Pathom to the west, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Nakhon Nayok to the north, and Chachoengsao to the east. Bangkok also has a 4.4 km stretch of coastline. Parts of the surrounding provinces have been swallowed up by Bangkok's sprawling metropolitan area. Formerly known as 'Venice of the East', Bangkok is criss-crossed by a network of natural and man-made canals called 'klongs' all of which link to the Chao Phraya. The canals were the only means of transport in former times. Today, they help drain the pancake-flat city during the rainy season.

Low plains form the rest of the area, mainly in the center and south. There are three canals, Khlong Bang Yai, Tha Jin, Khlong Tha Rua, and Khlong Bang Rong, which run through the island. Surrounded by 32 smaller islands, Phuket occupies 543 square kilometers. The overall length from north to south is 47.8 kms and 21.3 kms from west to east. Phuket connects to the mainland by two bridges, the Sarasin Bridge and Thoa Thep Krasatri Bridge (600 meter, across Pak Phra Channel, bridging Chatchai Landing of Phuket and Tha Nun Landing of Phangnga). To the south and west Phuket adjoins the Andaman Sea, and the Krabi Sea to the East. Phuket's average temperature is around 28.0 to 29.3 degrees Celsius. The lowest average is around 21.8 to 22.7 degrees Celsius and the highest is 35.7 degrees Celsius (in 1998).

Thailand Geography With an area of 513,115sqkm (198,404sqmi), Thailand has roughly the size of France . Located between 6° and 21° north latitude and 97° and 106° east longitude, she is bordered in the north by Burma and Laos, in the west by Burma, in the east by Cambodia and Laos and in the south by Malaysia (and the Gulf of Thailand). The longest north-south distance is about (930mi), the longest east-west distance about The topography is flat alluvial plains intersected by winding rivers and streams in central Thailand, a plateau in the northeast, forest-covered mountains and hills in the north and mostly hills in the south. Central Thailand - The central region is considered the heartland of the country. Basically it encompasses the alluvial plains created by the Chao Phaya River. The region is the most fertile of the country, and due to an extensive network of canals and small irrigation projects, the area is a major producer of rice. It is also the most densely populated region of the country, with the capital, Bangkok , in its midst.

Thailand shares borders with Laos and Myanmar (Burma) to the north, Cambodia and the Gulf of Thailand to the east, Myanmar and the Indian Ocean to the west, and Malaysia to the south. Covering a total area of about 514,000 square kilometers (slightly smaller then the state of Texas), it measures about 2,500 kilometers from north to south, and 1,250 kilometers from east to west. Its stretched shape resembles the head of an elephant with its trunk extending down the Malay Peninsula, drinking water from the Gulf of Thailand.
Actually, this extended shape is the prime reason Thailand boasts the most diverse landscape, climate, flora and fauna in Southeast Asia. Broad geographic characteristics divide the country into four natural zones: The North, the Central Plains, the Northeast, and the Southern Peninsula. Each zone offers the traveler a very diverse range experiences and many possibilities for exciting discoveries.
The spurs of Himalayas in the North of the country are lushly forested mountains with deep, narrow, alluvial valleys. The small hill tribes, who reside in this area, have managed to preserve their traditional culture, religion, language and way of life, which are absolutely different from those of the Thais. Thailand's highest peak, Doi Inthanon, the ancient city of Chiang Mai, and numerous ruins and temples are located in this region of pristine and austere beauty.

Geography Thai Airways International, the national carrier is known worldside for its "Royal Orchid Service" Thailand is at the heart of South East Asia and is the aviation hub to the region. Bangkok is served by major airlines providing fast and regular services from cities around the globe. North America is 18 hours away, Europe only 10 hours, Australia 8 hours, Japan 5 hours and Singapore 2 hours. Tropical island escapes. Thailand means 'land of the free' and for over 800 years the Thai people have bragged about being the only country in Southeast Asia that has never been colonized. Thai people originally came from Southern China to what was then Siam but when some of them didn't want to become part of the Chinese mainstream they moved to what is now Thailand. After Thailand settled down, the Sukhothai period began. Under the King's ruling the Sukhothai land was successful - there were fish in the water and rice in the fields. In 1350 a new King
