PHRA PATHOM CHEDI WEB SITE Welcome to the Great Pagoda in Thailand INTRODUCTION TO THE PHRA PATHOMCHEDI Phra Pathom Chedi is the oldest Buddhist monument in Thailand. It is located in a region where Buddhism was first introduced here by Sona Thera and Uttra Thera in the fourth Buddhist century. The present shape of Phra Pathom Chedi differs from the original one which was that of an overturned bowl in the Indian stupa style. "Phra Pathom Chedi" was in ruins for a long time until King Mongkut (Rama IV), still a monk, went on a pilgrimage to Phra Pathom Chedi which was 84 meters high at that time. When he ascended the throne, he decided to restore the Chedi by covering it with a new one. The four wiharn and the cloister were built during his reign: work began in 1853 and was completed during the reign of King Rama IV who added a new structure, the "Belfry" to this monastery; then the royal wiharn was restored as well as the replica of the former chedi and the mural paintings and a new one was erected to house a standing Buddha image named Phra Ruan Rojanariddhi Sri Indradhit Dharmopas Maha Vajiravuth Raj Pujaniyapborpit Finally the new ordination hall was built during the reign of King Rama VII.

HISORY OF PRA PATHOM CHEDI PHRA PATHOM CHEDI By M.C. Subhadradis Diskul In BudBuddhism took root in Siam long before the present day Siamese migrated into the country, as is evidenced by the many ancient Buddhist stupas in different parts. Of the latter we may reckon Phra Pathom Chedi to be the oldest. In actual fact, the well-known Chedi that we see nowadays is not the original one, which is inside having been built over by the newer structure. The stupendous bulk of the new conceals the ancient edifice. I will try to relate in brief the history of Phra Pathom Chedi, from what I have been able to gather in my researches on the subject. The history of this great sanctuary may be divided into four periods:
  • The period of Suvarnabhumi (approx.193 B.C. 457 A.D.) when the sanctuary was first erected. The period of Dvaravati (approx. 457-1057 A.D.) when the sanctuary was enlarged. The period of decay (1057-1853 A.D.) The period of restoration (from 1853 A.D. to the persent time).

Sukhothai was freed in 1781 BE (Buddhist Era) or 1238 AD from the powerful Khmer empire which ruled from their capital of Angkor, in neighboring Cambodia.* The initial King, Si Inthrathit, established Sukhothai as the first Independent Thai kingdom. The Khmer were driven to the South, and Sukhothai expanded its power by a combination of conquest and alliances by marriage with other Thai states. The establishment of a common religion, Theravada Buddhism, also facilitated close relations. BACK TO WORLD KID HOME PAGE SUBSCRIBERS! Nakhon Si Thammarat: A Glimpse Into Thailand's History... By Ee Lin Wan
Brought from Sri Lanka, the main chedi in Wat Mahathat has a gold-covered tip measuring 8.294 inches high.
Something "Different"
Crazy Ride On a Local Bus
Getting there from by road is not easy the local bus we boarded from Hat Yai to Nakhon Si Thammarat is an excellent experience in "rough travel" imagine getting squashed three person to a seat meant for two, with people standing for the entire four-hour ride, some hanging onto the bus doors for their dear lives. Now I can understand why the bus drive prayed for so long at the small shrine placed on the dashboard before the trip! He really needed divine interference to ensure the safety of all the passengers and himself. But after that four-hour ride, I learnt something about human kindness.
As we could not speak Thai, the conductor asked around the bus for someone who could speak English to find out where to drop us off. Then, we were dropped off right in front of the tourist office situated in the City Hall building. A slightly less adventurous way to travel from Hat Yai to Nakhon would be by shared taxis, where four passengers are squashed into the back seats of a 1960s Mercedes (with no air-condition!), and two passengers sharing the front seat. A more luxurious way is to hire an entire (air-conditioned!) taxi at around US 50 from Hat Yai to Nakhon Si Thammarat.

The History of Karen Silver Jewelry
About 50 years ago, silver experts working with the current Thai King Rama IX, imparted their knowledge of silver jewelry to a single Karen village in Northern Thailand in order that they would have an alternative to growing opium, their traditional cash crop.
Since then the Karens have shown great artistic talent in making their exclusive silver jewelry, and still, to this day only the one village carries on the tradition of silver jewelry making.
The skill is passed down from mother and fathers to sons and daughters, but never to anyone outside the village. The Karen have traditionally used silver and silver jewelry as a demonstration to others of personal wealth.
Originally they used silver to test their food; if silver turned black when it came in contact with any food, it was not considered eatable.

If we define Thai as Thai speaking people, they are not indigenous to the stretch of land corresponds to Thailand today.
Mons, dominant inhabitants in 6th century were superseded by Khmers who made military and political thrusts from the west. The Ancient Khmer Empire promoted trades along riverrines which connect the Chao Phraya with the Mekhong. It was through this trade routes that Thais came down from Yunnan in China now Riverrine city states along the upper stream of the Chao Phraya witnessed influx of Thai speaking people and they gradually gain independence from Khmer.
Sukhothai and other riverrine city states of Thais completed in nation building and by 15th century Thai states were engaged in wars. Ayuddhaya rose in the south, expanded and annexed Sukhothai Warfare between Northern city states kept Ayuddhaya busy.Newly unified Burma invaded the northern states and jointly attacked Ayuddhaya, which was defeated in 1569. Resurrected again under strong leadership of King Naresuwan in 1590, Ayuddhaya consolidated herself and attaracted trading ships from Europe. The reign of King Narai in 17th century was the heyday of Ayuddhaya as international port city where factories of European countries thrived and Chinese and Persian ships brought goods from far and away. Trade competition with Burma trigg ered war. Besieged Ayuddhaya perished in 1767.

History
A LAND OF DISCOVERIES

Archaelogical discoveries around the northeast hamlet of Ban Chiang indicates that the world's oldest Bronze Age civilisation was flourishing in Thailand some 5,000 years ago.
Successive waves of immigrants, including Mons, Khmers and Thais, gradually entered the land mass now known as Thailand, most slowly travelling along fertile river valleys from southern China. By the 11th and 12th centuries, Khmers ruled much of the area from Angkor.
By the early 1200s, Thais has established small northern city states in Lanna, Phayao and Sukhothai in 1238, two Thai chieftains rebelled against Khmer suzerainty and established the first truly independent Thai Kingdom in Sukhothai (literally, 'Dawn of Happiness').
Sukhothai saw the Thais' gradual expansion throughout the entire Chao Phraya River basin, the establishment of Theravada Buddhism as the paramount Thai religion, the creation of the Thai alphabets and the first expression of nascent Thai art forms, including painting, sculpture, architecture and literature.
Sukhothai declined during the 1300s and eventually became a vassal state of Ayutthaya, a dynamic young kingdom further south in the Chao Phraya River valley. Founded in 1350, Ayutthaya remained the Thai capital until 1767 when it was destroyed by Burmese invaders.

SUKHOTHAI
Sukhothai, meaning the ''Dawn of Happiness'' was the first free Thai city founded in 1238, by two Thai chieftains, Khun Bang Klang Tao and Khun Pa Muang , this ending Khmer rule from Angkor Wat. In the early 1300s, Sukhothai enjoyed suzeranity over the Chao Phya River basin, westward to the bay of Bengal and the entire Peninsula. The state that is still regarded by Thai historical tradition as the " first Thai Kingdom " was Sukhothai, There were, in fact, contemporaneous Thai states such as Lanna and Phayao, both in present-day northern Thailand, but the Thai historical imagination has been most stirred by Sukhothai. Even today, the evocative ruins of Sukhothai and its twin city Si Satchanalai conjure up images of material prosperity, artistic greatness, and serene Buddhist piety. Indeed, Sukhothai is remembered as much for its art and architecture as for its political achievements.
Sukhothai began life as a chiefdom under the sway of the Khmer empire: the oldest monuments in the city were built in the Khmer style or else show clear Khmer influence. During the first half of the 13th century the Thai rulers of Sukhothai threw off the Khmer yoke and set up an independent Thai kingdom. One of the victorious Thai chieftains became the first king of Sukhothai, with the name of Si Inthrathit [Sri Indraditya]. Sukhothai's power and influence expanded in all directions by conquest [the Khmer were driven southwards], by a farsighted network of marriage alliances with the ruling families of other Thai states, and by the use of a common religion, Theravada Buddhism, to cement relations with other states.

History of Thailand's culture
N ow for a bit of history to complete the bird's eye view of Thailand's culture. A thousand or more years ago, most of Thailand apart from the southern area in the Malay Peninsula, was under the domination of the hinduiz ed Mon-speaking people of Dvaravati (457-657 A.D.) and the Khmer or Cambodian Empires (957-1257 AD); while the Malay Peninsula was under the suzerainty of Srivijaya, the hinduized Sumatran Empire (657-1157 A.D.). During these times the Thai, as a race, emigrated gradually from their home in Southern China into the Indo-Chinese Peninsula.
During these times many off-shoots of the Thai tribes Siam or Palized into Samadesa. There is no doubt that the Thai had been befor e that time already in the land of the Mon and The Khmer Empire but they were only a minority and formed themselves into semi-independent states under the suzerainty of these empires. Traditionally these Thai who settled in Central Thailand or Siam were called Thai Noi or Lesser Thai in contrast to Thai Yai or Major Thai who are the Shans of Burma. Traditionally the Thai Noi or Lesser Thai came from the north of Thailand. It was therefore presumed that they were the Northern Thai of Chiang-mai with the Laos or the Thai of Mekhong basin partly mixed; but to me the so-called Thai Noi or Lesser Thai had in their melting pot in no less degree the Thai Yai or Major Thai i.e. the Shan too.

    Climate

Thailand enjoys a tropical climate with 3 distinct seasons – summer from March through May, rainy with plenty of sunshine from June to September and cool from October through February. The average annual temperature is 28°C (83°F), ranging, in Bangkok, for example, from 30°C in April to 25°C in December. Time Time in Thailand is 7 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+ 7). History People Throughout her long history, Thailand has gently absorbed immigrants. Many were skilled as writers, painters, sculptors, dancers, musicians and architects, and helped enrich indigenous culture. People inhabiting Thailand today share rich ethnic diversity – – mainly Thai, Mon, Khmer, Laotian, Chinese, Malay, Persian and Indian stock – – with the result that there is no typically Thai physiognomy or physique. There are petite Thais, statuesque Thais, round-faced Thais, dark-skinned Thais and light-skinned Thais. Some 80% of all Thais are connected in some way with agriculture which, in varying degrees, influences and is influenced by the religious ceremonies and festivals that help make Thailand such a distinctive country.

    Sexual relationships in Thailand

If you are traveling to Thailand, you may be interested in sexual relationships with locals, and no, I do not mean the services of prostitutes or other commercial providers. While you can meet Thais interested in sex accidentally, the chances of success are not particularly high if you are there only for a limited period of time (as I said: no prostitutes). On the other hand, Thais often are sexually attracted to foreign people. For young Thai women, especially in Bangkok, it is chic to have a Western boyfriend. So, there must be a trick to overcome the time-consuming "accidental", and to link more effectively the sexual interests of foreign visitors with those of locals. Try the Internet. Or, more to the point: try www.AdultfriendsFinder.com

Southeast Asia has been inhabited for more than half a million years. Recent archaeological studies suggest that by 4000 B.C., communities in what is now Thailand had emerged as centers of early bronze metallurgy. This development, along with the cultivation of wet rice, provided the impetus for social and political organization. Research suggests that these innovations may actually have been transmitted from there to the rest of Asia, including to China. The Thai are related linguistically to groups originating in southern China. Migrations from southern China to Southeast Asia may have occurred in the 6th and 7th centuries. Malay, Mon, and Khmer civilizations flourished in the region prior to the arrival of the ethnic Thai. Thais date the founding of their nation to the 13th century. According to tradition, in 1238, Thai chieftains overthrew their Khmer overlords at Sukhothai and established a Thai kingdom. After its decline, a new Thai kingdom emerged in 1350 on the Chao Praya River. The first ruler of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya, King Rama Thibodi, made two important contributions to Thai history: the establishment and promotion of Theravada Buddhism as the official religion (to differentiate his kingdom from the neighboring Hindu kingdom of Angkor), and the compilation of the Dharmashastra, a legal code based on Hindu sources and traditional Thai custom. The Dharmashastra remained a tool of Thai law until late in the 19th century. Beginning with the Portuguese in the 16th century, Ayutthaya had some contact with the West, but until the 1800s, its relations with neighboring nations, as well as with India and China, were of primary importance.
