History and Government
History: The Kingdom of Thailand, known as Siam until 1939, was ruled by the Khmers, based in what is now neighbouring Cambodia, during the 11th and 12th centuries. In 1238 two Thai chieftains rebelled against Khmer domination and established the first independent Thai kingdom. Ayutthaya, to the north of Bangkok, was the capital of the kingdom from the early 1300s until its destruction by Burmese invaders in 1767. The Burmese were quickly forced out and the monarchy re-established. The absolute rule of the monarchy lasted until 1932 when it was replaced by a system of constitutional monarchy.
Since the end of absolute monarchy, Thailand has made slow progress towards a democratic, pluralistic system of government. The principal reason has been the attitude of the military which has exercised a strong though rarely beneficial influence: only recently have Thai politicians seriously addressed the issue of excluding them. But during the Cold War, this was a minor consideration: democratic governments were a rarity in the region and Thailand's chief strategic ally, the USA, was more concerned with Thailand's role as a bulwark against encroaching communism from elsewhere in South-East Asia. In this respect, Thailand was and continues to be an influential member of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN): with the Cold War at an end, Thailand has been prominent in proposing the reformation of ASEAN into a regional trading bloc (see

HolidaySite History The early history of the area now known as Thailand is difficult to document. There are few records available today due to the lack of a unified system of writing, the ravages of the jungle environment on antiquities and the many times the inhabitants of this area were over come, enslaved or killed. This fertile and livable area has supported human life for a much longer period of time than we have verifiable written records. Founded in the thirteenth century, the Kingdom of Thailand was known until 1939 as Siam, a word that still, for many visitors, evokes visions of an ancient land of mystery and allure. Once referred to as Siamese, the people of Thailand are now called "Thai", which itself mean 'Free', Thailand being "The Land of The Free." If we trace the origins of the Thai we find their ancestors were a people of southern China called T'ai who slowly migrated throughout the area, some settling in what is now northern Thailand and establishing a fledgling Thai kingdom at Payao in 1096. Spurred by the Mongol conquest of China, the northern Thai kingdoms grew in size and numbers, with Lanna Thai and Sukhothai becoming especially important cities. Mengrai, a tribal leader who founded Lanna Thai, " A Million Rice Fields", named his Chiang Mai city which still today serves as a bastion of traditional Thai ways.

So much for the expension of the Shan race; but it is well to remember that the expansion of a race is one thing and that the origin of a race is quite another. We know where the early home of the Chinese was above four thousand years ago at the beginning of their origin. The early home of the Shans may have been, and probably was, in the ravines and valleys of Sze-ch'uan, but this is farfrom saying that they originated there.
"The Hua man had to acknowledge that the new savage lands they were appropriating provided many useful things. From the natives of the rich south they obtained stones and metals, handsome pearls and feathers for the ceremonies of their courts and temples, and bamboo and rhinoceros hides for the arrows and breastplates of their aristocratic fighting men".
"It wat not difficult for the Hua men to admit that the best arms and armour, or the materials for them, had to be obtained from unlettered aliens. But it was less easy for them to ackmowledge, or even to realize, that they borrowed idead from foreigners". (Ancient China, 1968 Time-Life, p. 15-16.)

For women, it is a full-length pasin- a rectangular piece of cloth worn like a skirt or sarong- generally made of Thai silk. The pasin can be any color and generally has contrasting bands around the hem. It is worn with a long-sleeved silk blouse. On formal occasions a sash may be worn across the breast from the left shoulder to the right part of the waist. For men, the traditional dress is trousers with a "seua phra ratchathan" a short-sleeved shirt (long-sleeved for formal occasions) with a high collarless neck. On formal occasions, a cummmerbund is tied around the waist. Of all traditional performing arts, the most famous is the masked dance drama known as Khon. All of the characters wear ornate costumes and paper-mache masks. The story is told through stylized gestures and postures.

Pathum Thani - History Pathum Thani is a neighbouring province of Bangkok. It is situated on the Chao Phraya basin with plenty of canals and orange plantations. Its original name is Muang Sam Khok, which was founded during the Ayutthaya era. It was the settlement for the Mon people migrating from Mothama (in Myanmar) over 350 years ago. In the year 1815 when King Rama II made a royal visit to this area, the inhabitants offered him plenty of lotus flowers which is the origin of the present name. Pathum Thani Town is only 46 kms. from Bangkok. It occupies an area of about 1,565 square kilometers and is administratively divided into 7 districts (Amphoes): Muang Pathum Thani, Lat Lum Kaeo, Sam Khok, Thanyaburi, Nong Sua, Khlong Luang, and Lam Luk Ka. A Brief History of Rice

* From the publication Rice: Then and Now by R.E. Huke and E.H. Huke, International Rice Research Institute, 1990.
Introduction
Rice is intimately involved in the culture as well as the food ways and economy of many societies. For example, folklore tells us that when the Kachins of northern Myanmar (Burma) were sent forth from the center of the Earth, they were given the seeds of rice and were directed to a wondrous country where everything was perfect and where rice grew well. Rice is an integral part of their creation myth and remains today as their leading crop and most preferred food. In Bali, it is believed that the Lord Vishnu caused the Earth to give birth to rice, and the God Indra taught the people how to raise it. In both tales, rice is considered a gift of the gods, and even today in both places, rice is treated with reverence, and its cultivation is tied to elaborate rituals.
Chinese myth, by contrast, tells of rice being a gift of animals rather than of gods. China had been visited by an especially severe period of floods. When the land had finally drained, people came down from the hills where they had taken refuge, only to discover that all the plants had been destroyed and there was little to eat. They survived through hunting, but it was very difficult, because animals were scarce. One day the people saw a dog coming across a field, and hanging on the dog's tail were bunches of long, yellow seeds. The people planted these seeds, rice grew, and hunger disappeared. Throughout China today, tradition holds that "the precious things are not pearls and jade but the five grains", of which rice is first.

The June Hong is constructed mainly from a hard teak wood called Takien Tong . Extremely strong, the wood is used for the three masts that rise 23 meters above the deck; 28 meters above sea level. The trees cut for the masts date back over 300 years. Movies The junk featured in movies as early as 1974 when she was still operational as a cargo vessel. Everybody remembers the James Bond movie "The man with the golden gun". At the end James escapes with his Bond-girl on a Chinese Junk, the "June Hong Chian Lee". More recently (October 2000) she featured in the ZDF documentary "Das Weisse Gold". The director used the Junk to show what life must have been like, hundreds of years ago when Junks were the main mode of transportation in South East Asia.
