RIVERSIDE OPERA ENSEMBLE Incorporated in March 1984, Riverside Opera Ensemble is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to serving, developing, and nurturing artists and audiences through a diverse program of music theatre production, creation, experimentation and education. The productions are newly designed with orchestra and have received accolades from the New York press.
The company has attracted the notice of renowned artists such as Leonard Bernstein. Maestro Bernstein served as honorary chair for the New York premiere of Zandonai's GIULIETTA E ROMEO , a benefit performance for "God's Love We Deliver."
Many of Riverside's alumni have moved on to perform with the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Rome Opera, Netherlands Opera, Santa Fe Opera and San Francisco Opera.
The company's first production was Benjamin Britten's RAPE OF LUCRETIA . Along with several concerts, the company presented a new production of Leoncavallo's ZAZA which had not been performed in New York for many years. A workshop production of HANSEL AND GRETEL , enlisting students from the Harlem School of Performing Arts as participants, brought opera to an underserved community and launched Riverside Opera Ensemble's educational outreach program.

It's hard to look at the list of events for this weekend's Behind the Scenes festival, presented by the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia (TAGP), and not let out a "wow." For one day, more than 30 theater companies, many with sharply divergent missions, styles and seasons, will come together to represent Philly theater for the community. Each company is presenting a different activity, most relating in some way to the company's current production. You can check out the set and lighting schemes for the Wilma's Indian Ink or take a Japanese Noh workshop with Greg Giovanni, who's currently directing Azuka Theatre Collective's Friends . You can tawk with the folks at Philadelphia Theatre Co. and see an excerpt from their upcoming show Barbra's Wedding . (It'll be like buttah, I'm sure.) Pig Iron's Dito van Reigersberg and Quinn Bauriedel will lead a session on creating physical characters; there are improv opportunities from ComedySportz, Playback Philadelphia or LunchLady Doris; Brat Productions is opening up a rehearsal of

The Chatsworth estate covers more than 14,000 hectares (about 35,000 acres) of Derbyshire and Staffordshire, encompassing farms, woods, moorland, rivers, villages, quarries and other industries, large and small. The Chatsworth estate is owned by The Trustees of the Chatsworth Settlement on behalf of the Cavendish family. It is run by the Agent and his Deputy, answerable directly to the Duke and his Trustees. The Estate is administered from the Chatsworth Estate Office, on the edge of the park near the village of Edensor. The Estate is divided roughly into two categories - the "in-hand" estate, which means all the farming and other businesses which are both owned and managed by Chatsworth, and the "let" estate, which means farming and other enterprises on estate land are rented by tenants. The House and Garden together provide around 66 full time and 23 part time jobs. Many of these people learn their trade on the estate, and most of them live in estate houses in the villages of Edensor, Pilsley, Beeley and Calton Lees. In the summer they are joined by 100 more people, many of them part time, who work as wardens, ticket sellers, shop assistants, car parkers, guides, cooks and waitresses. The administration of the House is the responsibility of the Comptroller and he heads the permanent maintenance staff who are needed to ensure the preservation of the building and its treasures. The work of the joiners may involve anything from shovelling snow off the roof or moving statues to making a garden paybox or reconstructing and renovating a room; together with the electricians, plumbers, a painter, a mason, seamstresses, security men, telephonists and drivers, they also have an important role as members of the fire and salvage teams.
