Click the pictures for larger image! Introduction : "With their instantly recognisable songs, the works of Rodgers & Hammerstein dominated the world of musical theatre for over 17 years. But it was their very first Broadway collaboration above all others which set the standard worldwide, a standard by which shows are judged even today. "The purpose of Trevor Nunn's revival was to create a production that attempted to update the show that had re-written the rules of musical theatre. "By making the most of the spirit of the original writing, Trevor Nunn's plan was to bring out subtleties of acting that might appeal to a modern audience." Trevor Nunn : "Oscar Hammerstein was such a wonderful dramatist and therefore his lyrics are very readily speakable as soliloquy, as dramatic exchange between characters. "For the last 40 years or so certain elements of the original material traditionally have been cut and have disappeared. So knowing that there was a real breadth and a real seriousness, it was a wonderful project to do, knowing that there were things that could be reintroduced for a contemporary audience." "People call the office all the time and ask about doing productions of Rodgers and Hammerstein shows, and our reputation is of a place that doesn't want anything changed, but when you have artists like Trevor Nunn approaching, or interested in approaching, works of ours, they want freedoms, and some of the talented people deserve certain freedoms. It's a collaboration.

The drama behind the scenes at ACT By Misha Berson

Seattle Times theater critic JOHN LOK / THE SEATTLE TIMES Laurel Cutrona dances the Argentine Tango with her boyfriend, Rajesh George, in an ACT Theatre lobby before the start of a recent evening show. The theater company, a Seattle institution since 1965, is facing possible closure because of financial troubles. E-mail this article Print this article Search web archive According to supporters of ACT Theatre, the company is making progress in its scramble to raise the $1.5 million needed to save the playhouse from drowning in red ink. If ACT succeeds in its search for backers, it will mount a new season that begins in June. But many interested observers, here and across the country, are asking how one of Seattle's premier stage companies got into such a perilous fix in the first place. A new nest Some trace the genesis of ACT's crisis back to the 1980s, when its trustees and managing director Susan Trapnell concurred that the modest-size professional theater needed to move and grow. The company's 450-seat theater on Roy Street, founded in 1965 by teacher-director Gregory Falls and his wife Jean Falls, had hosted some of the first Seattle renditions of plays by Tom Stoppard, Harold Pinter, Sam Shepard and other major authors. It also nurtured and showcased the talents of a generation of gifted Seattle actors. But the facility was cramped and in disrepair.

The future of Wimborne Drama looks bright after the inaugural meeting of the new Youth Section was deemed a great success. Although the group will be supervised by adults, Wimborne Drama is keen that the youngsters themselves decide how the meetings will run, what plays they want to stage and even take a hand in directing themselves if they wish. After a lively discussion at the first meeting, it is clear that the Youth Section members have clear ideas of what they want to achieve. The group will meet in the flat at 7.30pm every Wednesday, from 15th May, and its first production will be at the Patrons’ Garden Party on 4th August. The Youth Section is open to anyone aged 10-18 and if you know of anyone interested in joining, contact Chris Brown on (01202) 886191. February 2002

ETSU Division of Theatre offers hands-on experience behind the scenes
August 17, 2001
JOHNSON CITY – When the lights go down and the curtains open to reveal an upcoming performance, few in the audience realize what it takes to bring those intimate details to the stage, but the East Tennessee State University Division of Theatre knows it well. Everything from costumes and backdrops to props, lighting and sound are carefully prepared by a behind-the-scenes team before and during showtime. At ETSU, this team is made up of theatre instructors, their students and volunteers. “We try as much as possible to make sure students are running the show,” said Melissa Shafer, an assistant professor of communication who serves as Division of Theatre technical director and director of design. “We are there to troubleshoot in case there's a problem the students can't solve.” Students are largely responsible for everything from scene construction to make-up application, not to mention acting. Part of those responsibilities involve designing a set. An arduous process, set creation begins with a working drawing of how the set will look. From there, students literally build their way to the finished scene. After finalizing an outline and transferring it to a more permanent, wooden surface, students saw, sand, paint and hammer under Shafer's supervision. “Our shop is remote from the theatre, so finished work often has to be done on the set for everything to fit the stage and be easily taken down for storage,” said Shafer. The shop is located in the basement of Brooks Gym, and performances are held in Bud Frank Theatre in Gilbreath Hall on the main ETSU campus, as well as in the historic Memorial Theatre on the grounds of the adjacent Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Mountain Home.

Earlier this year City of Angel interviewed writer/producer Tim Minear and discussed the episode. He specifically praised Jeremy's performance, ""It took forever to cast Penn for instance. We saw a jillion actors and Jeremy came in at the last minute. He was the last guy to read and Amy [Brit - Casting Director] said, 'I read a guy today and seemed really good.'
