GENERAL INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE Forgotten times Rebirth GENERAL INFORMATION Today, one can see the terraces of the Vienne theatre lining the western flank of the Pipet hill (the cavea ) and, below, a semi-circular space (the orchestra ) as well as a reconstruction of the wall (the proscaenium ) which delineated the stage (the pulpitum ). At the back, the foundations of the stage and the pit for scrolling the backcloth have been preserved. The approximately 32 metre high wall ( frons scaenae ) which closed off the building on the city side, has disappeared.
The general layout of the monument is fairly well-known in spite of the major reconstructions carried out in the course of excavations begun in 1922. The purpose of these reconstructions was to "preserve" the edifice and help understand it as well as to permit the re-use of the ancient structure as an entertainment site.
The Vienne theatre is one of a series of "classical" theatres inspired by those built in Rome from the second half of the 1st Century BC The theatre's diameter makes it the second theatre in Gaul after the Autun theatre (148 m. diameter). Including the upper portico, it has a diameter of 129.8 m (439 Roman feet). It has the same dimensions as the

The Shriver Auditorium on the Homewood campus of the Johns Hopkins University, christened the "Snark Theatre" in 1994 by '96 Chris Aldrich, is home to Weekend Wonder Flix , and Snark Sneak Previews film programs which have been running (in one form or another) for the past thirty years. Now with the largest movie screen and number of seats in the state of Maryland and the resources to present Dolby Stereo 35mm films in 1:1.33, 1:1.67, 1:1.85 (flat) , and 1:2.37 (cinemascope) aspect ratios, we at Snark Theatre provide the most intense screen experience in this region of the East Coast! Moreover, we have presented film festivals, classics, smash hits, and sneak previews to the general public and to the undergraduate body of this school. We are perhaps the single defining social event that every Hopkins undergraduate has attended at least once. (Keep in mind how antisocial everyone is at this school.) The Theatre is managed and operated by Wight Leisure a division of the Isle of Wight Council. The shape of the Theatre is square (23m x 23.5 x 9m average height), with seating and stage placed on the diagonal axis. It is linked to the Music Suite, providing a Green Room area together with small practice rooms (doubling as dressing rooms for small groups or soloists / single performers) and a larger classroom (doubling as a dressing room for large groups / chorus, or band room). There is a quick-change room for one person, approximately 10m from stage right.
