Chapter 7
K-3 Thematic Units and the Alaska Cultural Standards
by Nita Yurrliq Rearden
Bethel, Alaska
Yupiit calituut ilalluten. Yup'ik people work together. Currently, I work for the Lower Kuskokwim School District as an Education Specialist for the Yup'ik language program. My office is in the Bilingual Curriculum department, headed by Coordinator Beverly Williams. My knowledgeable coworkers are all content-area Curriculum Specialists for science, language arts, social studies, health, physical education, and mathematics. Everyone works together toward meeting the LKSD mission statement: "The mission of the Lower Kuskokwim School District is to ensure bilingual, culturally appropriate and effective education for all students, thereby providing them with the opportunity to be responsible, productive citizens." (p. 5, LKSD Annual Report Card) I was raised in the village of Kotlik, a small village of less than ten families at the mouth of the Yukon River. I value the unique experience of growing up having roots with the Yup'ik culture and language. A one-room school was operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs at Chaneliak, about six miles northeast of Kotlik. There were thirty to sixty residents in Chaneliak, a Catholic Church and an Alaska Commercial Company store. The Alaska Commercial Company supplied simple foods, such as flour, sugar, salt, tea, coffee, and canned goods. In addition to food, we had kerosene, gas, and motor oil for boats. The subsistence lifestyle we led was simple but strenuous.

Chapter 6
Yup'ik Language and Culture:
A Description and Analytical View of the 4-6 Yup'ik Thematic Unit
By Dora E. Strunk
Quinhagak, Alaska
This paper will describe and analyze the Yup'ik Thematic Units (mainly looking at the weather and the survival skills unit) for grades 4-6 at the Kuinerrarmiut Elitnaurviat (Quinhagak School) at Quinhagak, Alaska. The thematic units are challenging and enjoyable because the themes were derived from our culture. This paper will describe the community and students the program serves. It will look at the goals and objectives of the program, how long the program has been implemented. It will also describe the innovative instructional strategies used in the program. Examples of successes will also be included. Finally, I will attempt to include several problems with the program and my ideas for improving it. Goals and Objectives of the Thematic Units The thematic units don't have documented goals, but the units meet the mission statement of the Lower Kuskokwim School District, "to ensure bilingual, culturally appropriate and effective education for all students, thereby providing them with the opportunity to be responsible, productive citizens" (Waite, 1996/97, p.5). Under the LKSD mission statement the Student Learning Goals are listed. One of them states that students will value culture, environment, and others. The development of the thematic units certainly meets the student learning goals. At the Kuinerrarmiut Elitnaurviat our AOTE (Alaska Onward to Excellence) goal states that students will communicate effectively in Yup'ik. When Elders come to school and give a presentation, students learn new vocabulary. Students are conversing in Yup'ik.

Monthly Themes all underlined items are links ~ themes not underlined are not yet online
I vary my themes a bit from year to year, and I don't usually teach them all every year. Because I often teach a multi-age K-1 class or loop from kindergarten to first grade then back again, I sometimes have the same children two years in a row. They enjoy revisiting familiar themes and stories, and there are always new activities, stories, and poems being added, which makes it extra fun. The students who stay with me for two years do the work on a much higher level than they did the year before, and get more from the experience. So for me, repeating the material has never been a problem. This is a general schedule of what I pick and choose from during the year. I usually work on two or more themes at the same time, and there's a lot of overlap in some areas. If the kids are REALLY interested in a particular area or theme, we spend more time on it and I eliminate or shorten something else. Many of the basic themes like colors and patterns are woven throughout the year, and many themes carry over from one month to the next. We also focus on one or two authors or story characters each month. If you know of any good resources I should add to my units, have a website or thematic unit you'd like me to link to, or have songs and poems to share, please send me a note at

We will be using a web based bulletin board system as our primary means of class discussion. You will be expected to contribute to the discussion by posting at least one contribution every two weeks. However, you are encouraged to post more. To keep the discussion manageable, please limit the length of your comments to approximately 300-500 words. Please write no more than one single spaced typed page. The weekly deadline for posting is Saturday, midnight. There are three exceptions to the bi-weekly bulletin board discussions. In the time periods in which your reaction papers and final presentation are due, there will be no "required" discussions. September 23 - 27: Respond to one December 9 - 13: Besides the five bi-weekly discussions, please post the list of sign systems and disciplines that you used during the exploration and presentation of your inquiry. (This is #9 of the Personal Inquiry Assignment.) A common question about using thematic units is, "How will I teach the required skills and content if I use thematic units?" As Tchudi and Lafer suggest, many opportunities will arise during the course of the inquiry to teach specific skills and content, as they directly relate to the different explorations that are going on at any given time.

Writing Thematic Units for Early Childhood Classrooms
By Laura Tully
CU: Technology in Early Childhood Education
Course EDCI Number 604
August 2, 2001
A thematic unit is a collaborative unit in which a teacher can integrate all of the curricular areas under one theme. Teaching language arts through thematic units across the curriculum typically integrates broad areas of knowledge, such as social studies, mathematics, or ecology with the teaching of the four major language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. (Ritter) In the Connected University (CU) class, It’s Never too late, Technology in Early Childhood, the primary goal of the class was to create a unit using the Internet as the primary research tool.
Thematic teaching seeks to paint a big pictureto look at the larger ideas embedded in our curriculum, the how and why of history, ecology, biology, and so on (Hepler, 1989). But where does one begin? Thematic units are a "multifaceted method of planning," "a dynamic process"; they have a broad enough scope to incorporate many types of books and materials but are not so broad that the connections within the topic are lost. They should have appeal to children as well as intellectual content.
When writing a thematic unit, there are several approaches that a teacher can take. The first approach is to select a topic and have one activity related to the topic in each curricular area. The second approach is to shape the entire classroom procedures and routines around the selected subject. A third approach is to use the seven intelligences to appeal to the student’s learning styles under a given project. When creating a thematic unit, I try to integrate all of these three approaches.

There are several criteria to use when selecting a piece of children's literature for use in your classroom. First of all consider all the possibilities: print books, legends, poems, chants, folktales. Of course if you choose a story that isn't yet illustrated, you will have both the challenge and the freedom to create the visuals. To help you sort through the criteria, Language Shaping Solutions has created the free tools:
