Mystery Corner Place old items that the students might be unfamiliar with on display. (Ex. coffee grinders, animal yokes, ice thongs) Submitted by Mrs. Lee A map of the 50 United States has been drawn and painted on a concrete surface outside. Students walk on each state and name it, spell it, and/or name the state capitals. This can be done in groups, individually, or as a team competition. Submitted by Mrs. Lee, 50 States and their capitals - This is a good site for learning about the different states. Math:
String is used with 6th graders to measure distances which are curved. Then, a ruler is used to show how much harder it is to measure the same area which is not straight. Submitted by Mrs. Lee, Classroom Management:
To keep up with notes and excuses that students bring I purchased a large portable file folder box. I put hanging folders in the box(1per student). I then put one pocket folder (these work best so notes don't fall out) inside each hanging folder. I put each student's name on one of the tabs of the hanging folder. As student bring excuses or signed discipline forms they are put in that child's folder. When questions come up about a child's absences or their behavior, I just pull out their folder and have information available without having to search. Submitted by Mrs. Angela Crocker

Other interviews were rigid with 6 people at a round table firing questions like How would you develop a reading curriculum for our school? Teach me how to write What if you had a child in your class who was on medication and his behavior was regressing...would you reconsider teaching? What would you do if a Special Education Teacher came to you and asked if she could have a prep period with you to plan for a child in your class that is special ed? Top For the special education teacher, thematic teaching can be very effective, because it organizes thought processes and gives a coordinated language base. The challenge special education teachers have, is not finding curriculum, it is adapting the curriculum to a wide variation of students placed in the classroom. Most classrooms have a variety of students with many different cognitive levels as well as different physical challenges. Materials and software programs need to be adapted so many skills can taught. This needs to be done in a fast and efficient manner. This presentation will show how SofTouch's Talk Companion Activities and/or Talk Overlay CD software can be the perfect solutions when a teacher wants to adapt the curriculum to meet IEP goals. The focus of this presentation is to provide teachers with multi-sensory accessible software but also the tools and materials that will empower them to create and adapt off-line materials to support their curriculum. Teach Me to Talk has been a very popular program over the past few years. It uses real graphics, Mayer-Johnston symbols, music, puzzles, prose to teach language, cognitive thinking skills, mouse, switch or IntelliKeys use.

Writing Units Within a given language program (e.g. a primary program, intermediate level program, Grade 9- 10 or 11-12 program), it is useful to divide the subject matter that is to be learned over the course of a school year or program into what curriculum developers call Units . A unit is an organization of various activities, experiences, and intended learning built around a central problem. Units are often developed around a particular theme, which, especially at the primary and elementary level, can integrate learning within a number of subject areas. For example, a thematic unit on transportation can teach oral language skills (vocabulary building), reading and writing, and it can integrate Math concepts, in that different kinds vehicles are compared and grouped with regard to size, colour, purpose or function. It can moreover integrate science skills, music skills, drama, dance, social studies and other areas. In designing curriculum plans with First Nations elders and speakers, I have often found that there is a preference for designing units and their sequences around the traditional seasonal round (hunting, fishing, gathering, trapping, but also adapted activities, such as ranching, farming or commercial fishing). This gives a culturally meaningful sequence to themes and content. However, the structure of the school year makes it difficult to integrate a seasonal round because some of the most important traditional activities (salmon fishing, root and medicine gathering and berry picking) fall into the summer months when children are out of school.

    and
    The Project CHILD Link
While the whole language movement versus phonics debate continues, growing consensus among leading experts suggest that a "combination of the two approaches may be the most effective way to teach...(Diegmueller, 1996)." Finally the experts have discovered what many teachers already know. Teach specific content, connecting skills with a more thoughtful, process approach. Project CHILD teachers can intensify "skill-based" curriculum by unifying the curriculum around a common theme. Project CHILD provides the ideal vehicle for thematic teaching while at the same time providing the underlying curricular framework for covering the basic foundational skills necessary for future success in the upper grades. Project CHILD brings balance to the instructional process through didactic as well as constructivist approaches. Here's how it works. The CHILD Learning Activities Guides offer six topical units organized around reading/writing genres. Each unit suggests the foundational skills in reading, language arts, and mathematics which support the unit topic. Project CHILD teachers use this framework as a vehicle for organizing their own thematic units. Here are some examples: Unit One (Getting to Know You/Autobiography): Friends, Families, Cultures, My Body-Myself, Feelings, Communities, Healthy Choices, Leadership, Courage, Heroes, School Family, etc.
