Theoretical Physics
The Theoretical Physics Group has interests in two complementary areas:
statistical physics.
non-linear dynamics.
The main emphasis of the group is towards theoretical work, but this is supported, where appropriate, with numerical studies using the Department's workstations. In statistical physics the theoretical study of the dynamics of random nonequilibrium systems is being undertaken. Current phenomena of interest include the kinetics of fragmentation, deposition, coagulation and growth. In addition, studies of the equilibrium statistical mechanics of disordered and random systems are being performed. Here the primary systems of interest are magnets, including spin glasses, non-interacting electronic systems and random matrices. Within non-linear dynamics, the emphasis is on dynamical systems theory and on applications such as the control and exploitation of chaos and entrainment. The investigation of spatally extended systems is being performed using both discrete and continuous systems. Areas of current interest range from traffic flow problems to coupled map lattics. In addition the Group is interested in the phenomenon of self-organised criticality. This is studied from the perspective of both statistical physics and non-linear dynamics. The Group has active collaborations with Queen Mary and Westfield College in the UK and with Saclay (France), Brookhaven (USA), and Warsaw/Cracow (Poland).

Postgraduate Study Research Activities The group conducts research in fundamental issues of modern theoretical physics. Its achievements include significant discoveries in supersymmetry and string theory , amongst which are the non-renormalisation theorems for supersymmetric theories and the construction of supergravity theories in 10 dimensions. Our current research interests include supersymmetry superstrings and branes , and exactly solvable quantum field theories Superstrings are thought to provide the basis for a unified theory of all physics. Recently, however, it has become apparent that the notions of particles and strings should be generalised to extended objects called branes, and that these should appear in the theory on the same footing as strings. One area of interest in King's is the study of intersecting branes. Where branes intersect they form surfaces containing quantum field theories, and a striking consequence of this is that the classical dynamics of the branes determines the full quantum dynamics of these field theories. One example of our work in this area is the paper Classical M-fivebrane dynamics and quantum N=2 Yang-Mills by Paul Howe, Neil Lambert and Peter West.

e-mail: loll@aei-potsdam.mpg.de (Accepted 19 November 1998) Abstract The construction of a consistent theory of quantum gravity is a problem in theoretical physics that has so far defied all attempts at resolution. One ansatz to try to obtain a non-trivial quantum theory proceeds via a discretization of space-time and the Einstein action. I review here three major areas of research: gauge-theoretic approaches, both in a path-integral and a Hamiltonian formulation; quantum Regge calculus; and the method of dynamical triangulations, confining attention to work that is strictly four-dimensional, strictly discrete, and strictly quantum in nature.

Bristol has a strong tradition of theoretical physics, J E Lennard-Jones was the first Professor of Theoretical Physics in the UK. After he left Bristol in 1932 the chair was occupied by the 27 year old N F Mott. Mott, together with H Jones, showed that the new quantum mechanics could help unravel the properties of metals and alloys. Other notable Bristol Theorists include H Fröhlich, D Bohm, F C Frank, M H L Pryce, J F Nye and J M Ziman. These pages describe the work of our current theory group. Following the Bristol tradition most of the theorists are involved in collaborations with one or more of the experimental groups in the physics laboratory. Bouncing and Spreading

my resume
email me

my current area of research is intelligent image processing; over the past few weeks i've been working on some image processing software using a hopfield neural network architecture.
follow the links below to see some results from the various routines i've written
hopfield image recognizer

i began by programming a hopfield image recognizer which stores a collection images, then when presented with a new image the network responds with an image generated from the stored images.
hopfield super-resolution

the second routine i've programmed uses a hopfield architecture for image interpolation. the network effectively improves the resolution of an image by estimating pixel values between known pixel values. super-resolution will be my primary area of research.
here are some screen shots from the software in action:
