Becker, a pioneer in the field of regeneration and its relationship to electrical currents in living things, challenges the established mechanistic understanding of the body. As his understanding of the effects of electrical forces led him to alert the public to their possible effects on the environment, the establishment erected an even higher wall of resistance. The Body Electric also explores new pathways in our understanding of evolution, acupuncture, psychic phenomena, and cancer, all within the framework of Dr. Becker's colorful and controversial career.

Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) was a Norwegian polar explorer who was the first person to fly over the North Pole in a dirigible (May 11-13, 1926) and was the first person to reach the South Pole. Amundsen and his small expedition reached the South Pole on December 14, 1911, traveling by dog sled. Amundsen was also the first person to sail around the world through the Northeast and Northwest passages, from the Atlantic to the Pacific (in 1905). He was the first person to reach both the North and South Poles. Amundsen died in a plane crash attempting to rescue his friend, the Italian explorer Umberto Nobile who was lost in an airship. Late Night Shopping Director: Saul Metzstein, 2001 An upbeat, oddball, after-hours comedy about the ups and downs of sex and supermarket work in the 21st century. Four friends, Sean, Vincent, Jody and Lenny find themselves at something of a dead-end. Trapped in a twilight world of permanent night shift work they hang out together in the local all night cafe, where their only escape from the drudgery is observing Vincent's unwavering success in pulling women. Life seems to offer little prospect of change. But when new characters enter their world, events develop unexpectedly. An imaginative slacker comedy, with tight direction, script and performances, "Late Night Shopping" is a striking creative feature partnership between director Saul Metzstein and writer John Lothian. Cast: Luke de Woolfson, James Lance, Kate Ashfield, Enzo Cilenti, Heike Makatsch, Shauna MacDonald, Sienna Guillory, Laurie Ventry. 91 min. THE HISTORY OF CANADA Settlement and Exploration in the West The Canadian prairies were not entirely unknown even in the days of New France. As early as the 1730s a family of explorers headed by Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, sieur de La Verendrye, began a series of overland explorations far to the west of Lake Superior. Their travels carried them into what is now the western United States, perhaps as far as the foothills of the Rockies. They visited Lake Winnipeg, the Red River, the Assiniboine River, and the Saskatchewan River as far upstream as the fork formed by the North and the South Saskatchewan. The posts of the Hudson's Bay Company had given England a preferred jumping-off point for exploration of the Canadian west. An expedition under Henry Kelsey explored the territory between York Factory and northern Saskatchewan in 1690, long before the journeys of the La Verendryes. In 1754 Anthony Henday traveled from Hudson Bay as far as the foothills of the Rockies, reaching a point near the site of present-day Red Deer, Alta. Another Hudson's Bay Company trader, Samuel Hearne, discovered Great Slave Lake in 1771, and by descending the Coppermine River to its mouth, he became the first white man to reach the Arctic Ocean by land. Although the Rockies still barred the overland route to the western ocean, the Pacific coast of Canada was visited by sea in 1778, when Capt. James Cook explored the northwest coastline from Vancouver Island to Alaska.

Rocky Mountain House It was the North Saskatchewan River that brought to Rocky Mountain House the greatest of land geographers and one of Canada's great explorers. Indeed the North Saskatchewan bore witness to many encounters Thompson had with the Peigan and Blackfoot Indians who made a special crusade of denying the passes to traders bent on crossing. David Thompson warranted special attention by these Indians. Thompson was believed to have special powers by the Indians. One example of this is related in The North Saskatchewan River 1972 White Water report. "The remaining three miles to Saskatchewan Crossing are easy paddling, for the river again widens into a larger channel. It was in this vicinity in 1810 that David Thompson's party was attacked by a Peigan ( Blackfoot) war party determined to stop Thompson from going through the mountain passes. Fortunately for Thompson, three grizzlies suddenly appeared on the scene. Since the Peigans and most of the Tribes who met David Thompson, believed that bears were Thompson's supernatural protectors, Thompson and his men were able to escape. The Indians named Thompson koo-koo-sint, " You who Look at the Stars," from his constant use of his sextant which the Indians saw as possessed of special powers.

Kendra Holyoke is an undergraduate student majoring in elementary education at the University of South Florida. She became interested in using multicultural literature with mathematics while completing an independent study project with Dr. Thompson. A Multicultural Exploration with Bread The high stakes assessment environment in Florida, with an emphasis on reading, writing, and mathematics, has placed pressure on teachers to find time to teach social studies. One way to maintain social studies in the elementary curriculum is to integrate the content with the teaching of mathematics and language arts. Elementary teachers may naturally think of the social studies and language arts connections, through the reading of books with a multicultural connection; however, they may overlook the mathematics connections that are possible with those same books.

It is now well known that Viking explorers reached parts of the eastern seaboard of what is now Canada about the year 1100 and that Norwegian Leif Erikson's Vinland may have been an area that is now part of the United States. What is less known is that a Welshman may not have been too far behind Erikson, bringing settlers with him. According to Welsh legend, Madog ab Owain Gwynedd was a 12th century prince from Gwynedd who sailed westward with a group of followers seeking lands far away from the constant warfare of his native Wales. According to the story, his eight ships made landfall at what is now called Mobile Bay, Alabama in 1169. Owain's little flagship was the "Gwennan Gorn." Liking what he found, Madog then returned to Wales for additional settlers, who consequently left with the explorer in a small fleet of ships. Sailing westward from Lundy Island in 1171, the courageous little band was never heard from again, at least in Europe.

Secondly, the lengthy quarantine process required for many fruit species has discouraged breeders from introducing new germplasm. Clones are usually retained for virus testing at the Quarantine Center at Glenn Dale, Maryland for 6 to 10 years. Many do not survive at the Center due either to propagation failures, cultural problems or, diseases such as fireblight on pears and apples. However, progress in facilitating movement of plants through quarantine is promised now that this facility is being managed jointly by the National Germplasm Resources Laboratory (NGRL) and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the USDA (APHIS) and more funds and staff are being allocated for this important facet of plant introduction.
