MOTIVATION PURPOSE PROJECTS STAFF ... CREDITS INA is a project initiated by Professor Miguel Angel Centeno of Princeton University 's Sociology Department and is being pursued in collaboration with Eszter Hargittai of the same department and numerous Associates M O T I V A T I O N The combination of various network data sets and analyses would allow us to link network position in a particular field (e.g. telecommunications) with that in another (e.g. migration). With longitudinal data, we could begin to explore the extent to which position in a particular network could explain or predict subsequent position in another. By adding non-network data such as economic growth rates, policy votes, or cultural trends, we could also test the explanatory power of network position in and of itself. These efforts would allow us to begin addressing some of the most important questions in contemporary social science:
  • What are the relationships between political decisions and economic outcomes?

62. Mapping The Global Web
What is the shape of the global hierarchy? Are we heading towards a new multipolarworld? Hirst, Paul and Grahame thompson. Snyder, david and Edward Kick.

Outline of Research Proposal
Motivation globaloney ?), but very much a real and significant phenomenon. Network analysis is perfectly suited to these types of questions and represents the best metaphor for the new global system (Castells 1996). Unlike other metatheoretical approaches, network analysis assumes a multipolar social world (Knoke and Kuklinski 1982). While most other methods consider hierarchical relationships in pyramidal forms, network analysis can define them in an infinite variety of geometric shapes—precisely what one may expect from a global web. Network analysis can tell us the relative density of global connections, the relative strength of ties between countries and regions, and the extent to which these have changed over the past two decades. The combination of various network data sets and analyses would allow us to link network position in a particular field (e.g. telecommunications) with that in another (e.g.

Because of their government majority, the Conservatives were not required to calla new election for (See also Abbott; thompson, John Sparrow david; Tupper
http://www.linksnorth.com/canada-history/macdonald.html
THE HISTORY OF CANADA Macdonald's National Policy Macdonald sought to strengthen the new Dominion both at home and abroad. He could foresee the ultimate evolution of something akin to the modern British Commonwealth, in which Canada would be an equal partner with the mother country. During the seven years following his return to office, his government adopted its previously announced protective tariff (1879), appointed Canada's first high commissioner to London (1880), annexed the Arctic Archipelago (1880), and completed the overdue transcontinental railway (1885). In 1885 word of a new crisis was flashed from the Northwest Territories. Louis Riel was leading the metis of the valley of the South Saskatchewan in a new uprising against the federal government, and this time he had aroused numbers of the Indians to fight beside him. A militia force was hastily dispatched under Gen. Frederick Middleton over the completed portion of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Within a few weeks the Northwest Rebellion was put down and Riel was arrested. His trial for treason and his execution aroused wide controversy across Canada and to a considerable extent cost the Conservative party the support of French-speaking Canadians for many decades. Macdonald's National Policy was by now the chief target of the Liberals, who were calling for "unrestricted reciprocity" in trade with the United States. Macdonald won the 1891 election. His health was failing, however, and later that year he died.

Schlock and awe…
Well, they got their PR moment. The felling of the statue of Saddam made great TV, and had to be very satisfactory to the marines and the handful of Iraqis who took part in its destruction. But it was no Berlin Wall. When the wall fell in Berlin, hundreds of thousands of Germans, from both east and west, took part. It was a magnificent sight, which was made possible not by war, but by internal and external political pressures, the media, information, and diplomacy. When the Soviet Union collapsed, a monumental dictatorship crumbled without our need to invade. The structures that subsequently arose from the ashes were flawed, unstable, but usually legitimate because they were instituted, as separate but equal sovereigns, deriving their just powers from the consent (usually) of the governed. This is not yet the case in Iraq. The American Revolution was fought by colonists, albeit with some help from friendly foreign powers. But victory came at the hands of the colonists.

New EIR Special Report Exposes Networks Now Escalating Religious War in Mideast
Jan. 11, 2001 (EIRNS)"No comprehensive peace in the Mideast is possible, without first taking into account the forces behind the present Temple Mount provocations," stated EIR Counterintelligence Editor Jeffrey Steinberg today. Steinberg is the chief editor of a new Special Report by EIR, entitled "Who is Sparking A Religious War in the Middle East?" That 167-page report is a bombshell exposé of the British, American, and "fundamentalist" forces who are pressing forward the Temple Mount provocations, right now. Steinberg went on: "Those forces pushing the Temple Mount provocations occupy positions of great power; they reside principally outside the Mideast cockpitparticularly in Great Britain and the United States; yet, their ability to unleash horrible forms of irrationalist terrorism, on a proverbial dime, represents one of the gravest threats to regional and global security today." "With Ariel Sharon now close to grabbing formal political power inside Israel, the threat represented by the Temple Mount apparatus is greater than ever," Steinberg said. "Under these circumstances, consider EIR's latest report a battle-map and a call to arms for all honorable people who wish to see the Mideast assume its rightful place as an 'Oasis' and as an historic center of the great monotheistic religions of the world."

The following individuals have expressed interest in presenting talks, collaborating in workshops, or offering classes at the Concord Grove Educational Center in the future. Many of these speakers are interdisciplinary thinkers, interested in the contributions that the world of learning can make to contemporary life. Bringing Nationally Recognized Speakers to West Michigan Starting in the Spring of 2003, the Concord Grove Educational Center will be bringing nationally-recognized speakers to West Michigan, to participate in workshops and other educational programs. These programs will be oriented primarily to individuals with a serious interest in the subject matter, who will travel to this area to attend workshops or small conferences, but will also allow these speakers to offer contributions to the local community and other organizations in West Michigan. In addition to sponsoring the workshops of national interest, we will try to arrange one public talk for each speaker in the Grand Rapids area, and/or make them available to speak at a local college or university, if there is interest.
