    Lightning
Lightning always accompanies a thunderstorm . It is estimated that lightning hits the Earth 100 times each second. That's 8.6 million strikes per day and over three billion each year. Lightning is five times hotter than the sun. A single bolt can reach 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
Lightning is an electrical discharge produced to balance the differences between positive and negative charges within a cloud, between two clouds, or between the cloud and the ground. You've heard the expression, "opposites attract." Well, this is exactly what happens with cloud-to-ground lightning. A negative charge at the base of the cloud is attracted to a positive charge at the earth's surface. This charge is densest on isolated or protruding objects, like trees and tall buildings. When the difference between these charges becomes sufficiently strong, the normal insulating qualities of the air break down and a lightning bolt strikes. What occurs as an instantaneous flash to the human observer actually is a complex progression of events. First, a usually invisible discharge of electrons races down from the cloud. This downward moving bolt of negatively charged electricity (called a stepped leader) incites a discharge of positively charged electricity from the ground.

    Thunder and lightning
I had a language lesson this evening with my friend Putu. We walked up Jalan Legian to a German restaurant and sat outside under a shade. No sooner had we started getting into it the skies opened and torrential rain came down. Everyone scampered inside and we spent 2 hours going back and forth in English and Indonesian. I'm trying to build my vocabulary and learn what is appropriate to say. I think Bahasa Indonesia is a relatively easy language and I hope that after a year I will be at a decent standard. Here's a sample of the question and answers we went through. Bagaimana kabarmu hari ini Putu? ( How are you today Putu?)
Saya baik, kamu bagaimana? ( I'm fine, how about you? )
Saya juga. ( Me too. ) Kamu datang dari mana? ( Where have you been? )
Saya baru datang dari toko. ( Just came from the shop. ) Kamu membeli apa? ( What did you buy?)
Saya membeli baju. ( I bought a t-shirt.) We wrapped up and agreed to meet next Wednesday at 4pm. I'll try to get some of these and other expressions down. The rain was still pouring and Jalan Legian, the main street was a

11/14/2002 - Updated 11:19 AM ET Resources: Lightning science and safety Jeffrey S. Otto, AP A single bolt of lightning strikes off Long Beach Pier on Oak Island, N.C., July 12, 2001. During every minute of every day, roughly 1,800 thunderstorms are creating lightning somewhere on Earth. Though the chances of being struck by lightning are estimated at 1 in 700,000, these huge electrical sparks are one of the leading causes of weather-related deaths in the USA each year with an average of 73 people killed; about 300 people usually are injured by lightning. The links below will take you to detailed information and graphics that explain what lightning is, how it forms, how it generates sound we know as thunder, and, most importantly how to play it safe around lightning. Other links take you to outside sites that have information on the science of lightning and strange kinds of lightning. Read more

Dangerous Lightning Thunderstorms, Lightning and Hail Lightning Strikes! Lightning and Thunder Lightning is a Killer! Thunder and lightning occur together. The light reaches you at once. Sound takes some time to reach you. Usually you see the lightning stroke before you hear the thunder. As soon as you see lightning, count the seconds until you hear the thunder. If there are 5 seconds, the lightning was about a mile away. (Sound goes about 1000 feet a second). In metric, if it takes three seconds to hear the thunder, the storm is about a kilometer away. If you see lightning and hear thunder at just about the same moment, watch out. The storm is right above you, only a few hundred feet away.

    Thunder and Lightning
With spring due this month, it might be fun to keep track of the first thunder and lightning of the year. What day do you first hear thunder? What was the weather like the day before, warmer or colder? What is the weather like after the thunderstorm, warmer or colder?
It is possible to use thunder and lightning to measure how far away a storm is. Here's how.
Lightning travels at the speed of light, about 186,000 miles per second. This means that you see lightning pretty much when it happens. When lightning strikes, a noise is made which we call thunder. Thunder travels much slower, at the speed of sound, about 1088 feet per second. It takes sound about 5 seconds to travel one mile. You can observe this for yourself.
Go outside and watch as a jet flies overhead. Where do you see the plane? Where do you hear the plane? If the jet is flying high, there will be a distance between where the plane can be seen and where it can be heard. You can see where the plane is right now. You hear where it was a little while ago. This is caused by the slower speed of sound.
So, if you time how long it takes to hear thunder after you see lightning, you can find out how far away the lightning struck. Use a watch or clock with a second hand or count the seconds. If you say "one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three, you have counted about 3 seconds. You can practice this with a clock to get the timing right if you want. Every 5 seconds between when you see lightning and when you hear the thunder is one mile. If you count 10 seconds between the lightning and thunder, the lightning struck 2 miles away.

"Soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines of the United States Central Command, this morning at 0300, we launched Operation DESERT STORM, an offensive campaign that will enforce the United Nation's resolutions that Iraq must cease its rape and pillage of its weaker neighbor and withdraw its forces from Kuwait. My confidence in you is total. Our cause is just! Now you must be the thunder and lightning of Desert Storm. May God be with you, your loved ones at home, and our Country." General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, USA Commander-in-Chief U.S. Central Command, in a message to the command, 16 January 1991
INTRODUCTION AND OVERVIEW. On 17 January, DESERT STORM began with a coordinated attack which included Tomahawk land attack missiles (TLAMs) launched from cruisers, destroyers and battleships in the Persian Gulf and Red Sea. The TLAM launches opened a carefully crafted joint strategic air campaign. The initial barrage of over 100 TLAMs took out heavily defended targets in the vicinity of Baghdad and made a critical contribution to eliminating Iraqi air defenses and command and control capabilities.
In all, 288 TLAMs were launched as part of the integrated air campaign. Launches were conducted from both the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf from nine cruisers, five destroyers, two battleships and two nuclear powered attack submarines. The top shooter was the destroyer USS

    Lightning and Thunder
Lightning is the most spectacular element of a thunderstorm . In fact it is how thunderstorms got their name. Wait a minute, what does thunder have to do with lightning? Well, lightning causes thunder. Lightning is a giant spark. A single stroke of lightning can heat the air around it to 30,000 degrees Celsius (54,000 degrees Farhenheit)! This extreme heating causes the air to expand at an explosive rate. The expansion creates a shock wave that turns into a booming sound wave, better known as thunder. Thus the name thunderstorm.

    Thunderstorms
Thunderstorms are extremely dangerous and generate several types of devastating weather: lightning, heavy rain resulting in flash floods , strong winds, hail and tornadoes . According to the National Weather Service a severe thunderstorm is defined when it generates hail ¾ inch in diameter, winds in excess of 58 mph or tornadoes. Three ingredients are needed to create a thunderstorm:
    • Moisture - forms clouds and rain. Unstable Air - warm air that rapidly rises. Lift - fronts, sea breezes, and mountains are capable of lifting air to help form thunderstorms.
Thunderstorms occur mostly in the spring and summer months. They usually hit during the afternoon and evening hours but can occur year-round at anytime. The Gulf Coast, southeastern and western states usually experience thunderstorms during the afternoon, while the Plain States experience storms in the late afternoon and at night. Top of Page

You won't have to live in Flagler County long to discover the frequency and severity of our thunderstorms. Lightning is the most dangerous and frequently encountered weather hazard that most people experience each year. It is the second most frequent killer in the United States with nearly 100 deaths and 500 injuries each year. (Floods and flash floods are the number one cause of weather related deaths in the US.)
Know the terms: The more you know, the safer you will be when a storm threatens. Weather watches and warnings let you know what to look out for and when to take cover. Remember, severe weather can occur WITHOUT a warning issued. Always pay attention to what is going on around you.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch: This means that severe thunderstorms are possible in and close to the watch area. The watch will detail the the area effected, and the time span of the watch. Watch the sky, and stay tuned to a news source, or a NOAA weather alert radio. Watches are to let you know that weather might be on the way, but no severe weather has been reported.
