Thunder and Lightning The electric storm at last week's session of the Wilder Commission was powered by clashing visions of how to address Virginia's fiscal crisis. M
ark Twain liked to observe that the sound and fury of a gathering storm could be misleading. "The thunder makes all the noise," pointed out America's first master of the sound bite, "but the lightening does all the work." The Commission may not issue its final report until December, but ongoing, sometimes contentious discussions among commission members signal that real founded reports of recommendations we haven't made.”

Thunder and Lightning Ker-POW! Lightning is one of the most powerful forces of nature. There are some 2000 thunderstorms globally at any one time producing some 100 lightning strikes to earth per second. It is beautiful to watch, but it can also be tremendously dangerous and destructive. A few years ago, I started to write a piece for IfYouGolf.com on whether or not golfers were more likely to be struck by lightning than normal people. As you can see, I got a bit carried away... Just as a train crash receives media attention when a car crash doesn't, lightning very rarely makes front page news, yet each year 10,000 people are killed by lightning around the world. More than are killed by floods, hurricanes or tornados - the lifetime risk of an individual being killed by lightning has been estimated at 1:28,500. (NPH Newsletter January, 1992) In addition, an estimated 100,000 people are injured each year, and around a quarter of these will be left with lasting physiological or psychological damage. Lightning strikes also cause around £2 billion worth of damage each year, either directly or by causing fires. As with many dangerous phenomena, forewarned is forearmed, so here is a short guide to lightning: what it is and what it does.

Thunder and Lightning This summer, my brother, parents and I went down to our cottage for a couple days. Our cottage is located in Lake of the Woods, Ontario close to Kenora. We arrived at our cottage at about 8:00. We were all tired and my parents went to unpack.
My brother and I started a game of dominos. Soon my mom and dad joined in.
We had heard on the radio that there was a a big "Thunder Storm" coming in. The weather guy was right. Just when we were going to bed the rain started to pound down on the roof of our cottage. The thunder had rolled in and was getting louder and closer. We all got to bed at last. Five minutes later after I got in bed, it came, it was so loud I thought it hit our cottage. It was the "king" of all lightning and it was here!!! I woke with a start and went out to my living room. I saw my parents comforting my dog. She was scared too!!! I wasn't surprised to see that Rob my brother didn't wake up. My parents thought he got hit by lightning. The next morning , I went outside and looked around. One of the lightning rods were smoking! I guess I was right that our cottage did get hit by lightning.

    Thunder and Lightning
People often estimate the distance to lightning by timing how long it takes for the sound of the thunder to reach the listener. The light from the lightning travels at the speed of light and for all practical purposes arrives at the listener instantaneously. A good experiment might be to locate a bolt of a lightning by using four "detectors" and the same general ideas developed in this unit. This is definitely a three-dimensional problem. I haven't tried this and don't know how well it will work. One idea is to make an audio tape recording at each of four detecting sites. The tape recordings should be made using a microphone to listen for thunder and an AM radio. A lightning stroke should produce static. The signal carrying the static travels at the speed of light. By recording the static and thunder on the same tape one can make careful measurements at one's leisure of the time between the static and the thunder. The link below leads to an interesting Web site with some information about lightning. http://thunder.msfc.nasa.gov/primer.html

Homework Help Forum Homework Help Experts Thunder and Lightning Before lightning can occur, a charge separation large enough to cause electrical breakdown of air must develop. Thunderstorms are generally negatively charged at the base and positively charged in higher regions. One theory holds that the principle mechanism for separating electric charge is the vertical separation of larger charged droplets of water or ice (raindrops, hailstones, and so on) from differentially charged smaller droplets, as a result of their different settling velocities within a cloud. Another theory holds that small cloud particles and droplets are the principal charge carriers, and that the main mechanism for the separation of charge is the variable convective air motions within a cloud, which carry some particles upward and others downward. Thunder is the result of the impact between the ground and Earth. That's why they never occur at the same time.

In 1882, the Queensland Parliament set aside the substantial sum of £60,000 to purchase two Alpha-class gunboats. The identical boats were constructed in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England's famous boat building city, by the firm of Sir W.G. Armstrong, Mitchell and Company. The dimensions of each vessel were impressive for their times: Imperial measures Metric measures Displacement 360 tons 366 tonnes Length 120 feet 36.6 metres Beam 26 feet 7.9 metres (width at widest point) Draught 9 feet 6 inches 2.9 metres (depth in water) The boats were powered by compound steam engines of 400 horse-power, (298 kW) and were capable of a maximum speed of 10 knots (18.5 kilometres per hour). Both were initially equipped with an eight-inch (200 mm) gun on the bow and a six-inch (152 mm) gun astern. They also carried Nordenfeldt rapid-fire guns The Queensland Government named the boats Gayundah and Paluma - Aboriginal words meaning thunder and lightning.
