Work Report Chinese Legislators Visit Tibet Culture Show Xinhua Chinese lawmakers attending the ongoing Second Session of the Ninth National People's Congress, China's top legislature, visited an exhibition on Tibetan culture here this evening. The show, entitled "Snowland Pearl Culture Exhibition of China's Tibet," was inaugurated at the Beijing Exhibition Center Monday. The exhibition is the largest of its kind in China. On display are exhibits showing development and achievements in the Tibet Autonomous Region, more than 190 historical relics, archives and documents, art works of various kinds, costumes and decorations of Tibetans, and the life-style and work-style of Tibetan people working for a better life today. According to an exhibition sponsor, all the historical relics and archives on show are hard evidence for the historical fact that Tibet has been an inalienable part of China and the more than 190 historical relics on display show the historical changes and the intimate relations between Tibet and the interior areas. Some 30 official documents and letters, many of them are original copies, illustrate the relations between the Tibet local government and the central government since the 13th century.

[an error occurred while processing this directive] [an error occurred while processing this directive] 12 July, 2001 Eight Arrested as Tibetans Demonstrate Opposition to Beijing's Olympics Bid July 11, (Moscow): Five Tibetans and a Swiss supporter were arrested outside the Hotel Ukraine in Moscow when they attempted to unfurl a banner declaring opposition to Beijing's bid to host the 2008 Olympic Games. Two journalists were apparently also arrested at the time. The arrests occured under a climate of heavy intimidation from the Chinese government that has permeated Moscow during the IOC meetings. Karma Yeshi, Vice President of the Tibetan Youth Congress in India, and Takchul Rimpoche, a resident of Moscow, were arrested along with four Swiss residents: Alex Buchi and Chokey Choklay of the Swiss-Tibetan Friendship Association, and Yangzom Brauen and Tenzin Sewo of the Tibetan Youth Association of Europe. "We are concerned for the safety of our friends", said Shola Dhondup of the Moscow Tibetan Association. "China has been putting a lot of pressure on the Russian government to make sure that our people have no opportunity to voice their opposition to Beijing's Olympics bid. If this is how they act in Russia, how will China treat us in Beijing if they get the Games? " The Chinese Embassy had previously attempted to block a press conference sponsored by the Tibet Culture and Information Centre and the Transnational Radical Party, and is believed to have pressured the City of Moscow to deny Tibetans and supporters a permit to demonstrate near the meetings of the International Olympic Committee. Tibetans plan to try to meet with the IOC Ethics Commission today at 3:00 to deliver khatags, traditional Tibetan scarves, signed by 5000 Tibetans opposed to Beijing's bid.

Last Update: 07 APR 2003 INTO TIBET: The CIA's First Atomic Spy and His Secret Expedition to Lhasa
Thomas Laird http://www.intotibet.info/index.html The incredible story of a 1949-1950 American undercover expedition led by America's first atomic agent, Douglas S. Mackiernan—a covert attempt to arm the Tibetans and to recognize Tibet's independence in the months before China invaded. Only two Americans have ever walked across Tibet, north to south, and the true story behind their epic trek has never before been told. What did U.S. atomic intelligence, and McCarthyism, have to do with China's 1950 invasion of Tibet—and why has the CIA been hiding this chapter of American history for fifty years? Why did the Dalai Lama, when interviewed about America's motivations during this episode say, "The courage was not there?"
Thomas Laird will speak about the revelations in his book followed by a discussion and book signing.
