"Deeply regret advise you Titanic sank this morning, after collision with iceberg, resulting in serious loss of life. Full particulars later." This was the message sent to the White Star Lines New York office from the Carpathia, as she started to New York with the survivors of the Titanic Shipwreck.
The story of the Titanic starts berth 44, in Southampton, England. After four days of hiring crew members, loading supplies and making the final inspections, passengers started boarding on the morning of April 10. By noon, tugs pull the Titanic into open water for the start of her maiden voyage. She proceeds to Cherbourg, France and then to Queenstown, Ireland to pick up additional passengers. April 11, 1912 started with an emergency rehearsal with alarm bells and a gradual descent of the watertight doors. With the final passengers on board, the anchor is raised at 1:30 pm and the Titanic heads to sea with 2,227 passengers and crew. The ship performs beautifully, found to be extremely stable. Congratulations pour in by radio from other ships, often with warnings of icebergs ahead.

Child victim of Titanic shipwreck identified
HALIFAX Nov 6: It has taken 90 years, the latest in DNA technology and a television documentary to do it, but the "Unknown Child" from the doomed Titanic has finally been identified.
The crew of the Canadian recovery ship Mackay-Bennett found the body of the young, fair-haired boy a few days after the steamer sank, with the loss of 1,517 lives. But there was no identification and the crewmen decided to take the body to Halifax and pay for a proper funeral, burying the little coffin at the top of a hill in Fairview Lawn Cemetery, along with 120 other Titanic victims.
The headstone reads "Unknown Child" and over the years it has attracted the attention of cemetery visitors.
Now the experts have determined it was the body of Eino Viljami Panula, who was thirteen months old when the Titanic sank on April 15, 1912. He was one of five brothers from Finland who died in the disaster, along with their mother.
"The unknown child is now a known child, identified and returned to his family," said Ryan Parr of Canada's Lakehead University, who co-ordinated the work of over 50 scientists, genealogists, and Titanic researchers.

- Yugoslav media hailed the national team's heroic comeback against Slovenia at Euro 2000 but blasted them for a "disgraceful" performance in the first 60 minutes of a thrilling 3-3 draw in Charleroi. "They survived a major shipwreck," said Belgrade daily Glas javnosti on Wednesday. "Trailing 3-0 and down to 10 men, they looked like the Titanic when it hit the fatal iceberg." "Fortunately, Savo Milosevic came to the sinking ship's rescue and kept it afloat." The substitute striker scored two goals and left wing Ljubinko Drulovic added a third for Yugoslavia in a frantic six-minute second half spell shortly after Sinisa Mihajlovic, the team's star, had been sent off for dissent. "There are too many lies among us, we have to talk to each other face to face and say what has to be said," Milosevic was quoted as saying after the match.

Divers from England and Russia may be planning rival salvage expeditions to the world's most famous shipwreck, according to testimony. So far, though, that is merely unconfirmed rumor. In response, two judges reminded the president of R.M.S. Titanic Inc. that his company must protect the shipwreck from potential pirates until the court tells it otherwise. R.M.S. Titanic, which has been salvaging the shipwreck since 1987, was awarded sole salvage rights in 1994 by federal judges in Norfolk. The court has supervised all salvage since then. The company recently announced plans to give up those rights.

By MARC DAVIS, The Virginian-Pilot Last updated 7:21 PM Jan. 31 NORFOLK The company that has salvaged the Titanic shipwreck postponed a special shareholder's meeting at which it was expected to give up its salvage rights. R.M.S. Titanic Inc. said it cannot meet with shareholders as scheduled on Wednesday because the SEC is still studying the company's latest proxy statement, according to filings with Norfolk's federal court and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Last year, the SEC notified R.M.S. Titanic's biggest stockholder, and perhaps other company leaders, that it is preparing civil charges against the company or its leaders. In its latest quarterly report, filed Jan. 22, the Atlanta-based company said it lost nearly $1.5 million during the past nine months and is consulting bankruptcy lawyers. The company began salvaging the Titanic in 1987, soon after the shipwreck's discovery. The company was awarded sole salvage rights by Norfolk's federal court in 1994. Norfolk judges have supervised the salvage work ever since.

RMS Titanic, Inc. is the only company permitted by law to recover objects from the wreck of the Titanic. The Company was granted salvor-in-possession rights to the wreck of the Titanic by a United States Federal Court and is the sole exclusive owner of the valuable items recovered from the wreck site. The Company has conducted six research and recovery expeditions to the Titanic wreck site and recovered approximately 6000 artifacts, which represent less than 5% of the artifacts available for recovery.
The Company continues to maintain its salvor-in-possession status by making periodic expeditions to the wreck site law and therefore shall be the sole and exclusive owner of items recovered from the Titanic in the future. RMS Titanic, Inc. is also engaged in the business of exhibiting the artifacts recovered from the Titanic wreck site.
