KEY shipwreck ACTIONS IN NORFOLK. Update. decision regarding sovereign ownership ofshipwrecks and issued an important order concerning the salvaging of titanic.

O NLINE N EWS August 2, 2000 K EY S HIPWRECK A CTIONS IN N ORFOLK Update ourts in Norfolk, Virginia, have made a precedent-setting decision regarding sovereign ownership of shipwrecks and issued an important order concerning the salvaging of Titanic. Sovereignty hile it has long been held that individual countries maintain ownership of their own sunken naval vessels, few countries have asserted their sovereignty over an early wreck. In 1996, however, Spain moved to claim the remains of the frigates La Galga, which sank in 1750, and Juno, which sank in 1802, both off the Virginia coast of Assateague Island (see " Spain's Day in Court "). The two wrecks had been claimed by Sea Hunt, Inc., a salvage firm headed by a Mr. Ben Benson. In April 1999 federal judge J. Calvitt Clarke, Jr., of the Eastern District Court in Norfolk ruled that while Spain did have rights to Juno, the 1763 Treaty of Paris, which ceded to Britain all North American Spanish possessions, included the wreck of La Galga. Spain decided to appeal the decision, citing a treaty signed in 1667 by which Spain and Britain declared neither would take possession of the other's sunken warships (Britain supported Spain in this). Meanwhile, Benson and Sea Hunt, Inc., which had permits from Virgina's Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) to search for and salvage the ships, were also unhappy about the ruling. The case, as heard before the Court of Appeals in Norfolk (chief judge J. Harvie Wilkinson, 3rd) pitted Spain, backed by Britain and the U.S. Department of Justice, against Benson's Sea Hunt, Inc., backed by VCMR. Spain's claim was simply one of sovereignty over its sunken warships. Justice Department involvement was motivated by a desire to establish sovereignty over sunken U.S. naval vessels. For his part, Benson claims (according to a July 31

Bowen also is the first ROV pilot in the world to successfully penetrate a shipwreck and the first ROV pilot to perform archaeological excavations via remote control, retrieving delicate artifacts from a deep-water ancient Roman shipwreck off the coast of Sicily. He has more than twenty years of shipwreck explorations conducted for National Geographic Magazine, Woods Hole and the JASON Foundation for Education. Bowen also has piloted ROVs to explore other famous shipwrecks such as the liner Lusitania, the Nazi Battleship Bismarck and U.S. Navy battleships sunk during World War II's Battle of Guadalcanal. 64. Shipwreck Treasure
The interest in ship wreck and shipwreck artefacts owes most, not to the discoveryof the titanic in 1987, but a sale that took place in Amsterdam in 1986.

Shipwreck treasure
by Lorne Spicer 15th October 2000 On December 14, Christie's in New York will be selling shipwrecked treasure from SS Central America, one of the most significant hoards salvaged in recent years. The sale of gold bars, nuggets and coins which were valued at $1.6m when the steamship sank during a hurricane on September 12, 1857, is set to generate unprecedented interest and conservatively estimated to make some $2-$3m. Pictured right - recovering of artifacts from ocean floor.
Sotheby's in New York has already realised $5,567,815 from its sale of 400 pounds of gold bars, ingots, coins and gold dust from the same wreck which was auctioned off in June this year. The lots sold represent just 8% of the overall treasure and comes from those underwriters and insurers that had rights to the gold having paid out insurance claims when the steamship first went down.
The significance of the loss of SS Central America cannot be underestimated. Not only did 425 people perish, but the loss of the gold on board was so great that the sinking contributed to one of the worst financial panics in American history. The American banks were desperate for the gold having been drained of 20% of their gold reserves following the failure of the Ohio Life Insurance and Trust Company – the loss of SS Central America compounded an already dire financial situation.

On Titanic, Legato didn't have enough time and money to build a gantry, or the inclination to fly Mir subs on wires, which would have made lighting difficult and control even more so. Still, he liked the in-camera quality of Dream-Quest's approach. His solution was elegant, simple and cost-effective. "Rob said, 'What if we just hang the shipwreck from the ceiling? Then we could do everything else on the ground, and we wouldn't have to hang the subs from wires,'" Nash recalls. That way, the model-moving rigs could be used for other applications afterwards. Legato's "inverse gantry" was set up in another part of the same Hughes Aircraft hangar where the 45' Titanic was shot. The detailed /20-scale shipwreck miniature was hung upside-down from the hangar's ceiling, while the /20-scale Mir subs, built by Tony Meininger, were also mounted upside-down on two model-movers running along track on the stage floor. To program the moves of the Mir subs and the camera, which was itself mounted upside-down on a third grounded model-mover, Jim Rider, Titanic 's dry-for-wet motion-control operator, juggled 24 axes of motion (eight for each mover). The models and camera, working in close proximity, were constantly in danger of running into each other in the dark, smoke-filled stage. And with the shipwreck, subs and camera upside-down, Nash and company had to constantly be thinking in reverse.

"Jiangya" Shipwreck in 1948- A Tragedy More Serious Than Titanic
The explosion of Jiangya Ship out on the sea from the Yangtze River outlet 52 years ago once killed 2,353 people, 836 more than those in the Titanic accident, therefore claiming the biggest victim number among world top four ship accidents.
This is a revelation by Chen Jianguo, deputy chief-editor of commission for compiling navigation history of the Yangtze River.
Published by the People's Communication Press on November 1997, "A Brief History of Navigation on the Yangtze River" says the Jiangya ship, altogether with 3253 passengers aboard, suddenly exploded after sailing out of Wusong Estuary, December 3, 1948. "The victim number hit over 2350". While according to Wuhan Evening reporting, the "Brief History" published in May 1992 says there is altogether 2798 people on board, and " a total of 1483 passengers and crew died" after the explosion and sinking of the ship. Here appears a gap of 867 number of victims between the two.
The 79-year-old Chen says he has been to Shanghai many times for old newspaper reports on the accident, calling on many people concerned. Investigation shows there are more than 3200 people on that ship, including 2607 ticket-holders, 191 crew, and over 400 disbanded Kuomintang soldiers and pick-ups of the crew who have no tickets.

Law lecture explores famous shipwreck By Charity Halphen

The Daily Cougar When the Titanic sank in 1912, it left behind complex legal problems and the infamous shipwreck continues to spawn legal battles to this day. The UH Law Center sponsored a lecture Tuesday night to explore those past and present dilemmas. It was held at the Museum of Natural Science in conjunction with the art exhibit there of artifacts from the Titanic. "The sinking of the Titanic is a topic that still holds the fascination of people around the world today," Law Center Dean Nancy Rappaport said. Pin Lim/The Daily Cougar In a recreation of the 1912 U.S. Senate inquiry into the sinking of the Titanic, attorney John Ellison, playing the inquisitor, questions David Temple, playing Titanic owner J. Bruce Ismay. The UH Law Center held a lecture about past and present legal issues surrounding the famous shipwreck Tuesday at the Museum of Natural Science. "Few seminal events have shaped our lives. We remember such events as Pearl Harbor and 9/11, but the sinking of the Titanic supercedes all else," said attorney John N. Ellison of Anderson, Kill and Olick. "Maybe this is due to the allure of the people on board the Titanic that tragic night, or possibly the mystery of the sea."

THE WRITTEN WORD Columns
What Are "Meta Tags?'
Meta tags are "hidden" words that reside at the top of your web pages. The search engine spiders that crawl web pages can "see" these tags and use them to assist in cataloging your site properly. Meta tags contain at least two types of information. The first is the meta description tag and this controls the description that appears for a web page in search engine listing. For example, if you go to www.yahoo.com and search for, "Titanic" you will receive a list of web pages that have relevancy to the word, "Titanic." The description given for each site is determined by the meta description if you have included it on your page. As you can see, the description allows potential visitors to receive a glimpse of what your site is all about. The second type of meta tag is used for keywords. Again, these words are seen by the spiders that visit pages. Keywords allow you to associate words and phrases with a web page, to assist in determining relevancy.

The Brother Jonathan to determine who owns the shipwreck found off the coast of California: the State of California or Deep Sea Research, Inc. (DSR), the salvage company who found the wreck. With a decision expected in 1998, thirty states, including Alabama and Mississippi, await the decision which may alter the application of their historic preservation statutes managing shipwrecks. Although shipwrecks have always been of interest to coastal residents and treasure hunters, the recent discovery of the Brother Jonathan , the La Belle and the Titanic grabbed the attention of the whole nation. The public remains fascinated by each ship's tragic yet unique tale. For instance, the Brother Jonathan , a 220 foot wooden steamship, which sank off the coast of California in 1865 occupied the attention of the Deep Sea Research salvage group for 19 years. The

RMS Titanic
(Redirected from Titanic The RMS Titanic was a large passenger steamship that struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage on April 14 . She sank with great loss of life making it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters She was built on the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast Northern Ireland . She was the second ship of the Olympic -class liners of the White Star Line Company built in that shipyard, but was the largest and most prestigious passenger liner of the day. The Titanic was 269 meters (882 1/2 ft) long, 28 meters (92 1/2 ft) wide, and 56 meters (185 ft) tall. The ship had 899 crewmen and was built for up to 3,300 passengers. Because she carried mail, she was also called RMS Titanic (RMS standing for Royal Mail Steamer).
