    • A Comprehensive Introduction to Differential Geometry, Vol. I by Michael Spivak, Publish or Perish, Inc., 1999.
This text is required for the course. In addition there are several other books on the subject, which are worth examining. The first one below is on reserve at the Math-Physics Library and is an optional book for the course.
      • Calculus on Manifolds by Michael Spivak. Differential Topology by V. Guillemin and A. Pollack. Differential Topology by M. Hirsch. Topology and Geometry by G. Bredon.
      COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is the second semester of an introduction to Topology, a subject which had its beginnings in questions in Analysis in the late 19 th century. It has since become a central and important part of mathematics, with strong ties to most branches of mathematics. Although having attended the first semester is not a prerequisite, familiarity with point set topology is essential, whereas some acquaintance with the fundamental group will be helpful.
    • SYLLABUS:
    • We will cover Chapters 2 through 8 of the textbook.

Further contributions of all sorts are welcome. Please send them to Jonathan Rosenberg at jmr@math.umd.edu
Bibliography on the Novikov Conjecture and related topics:
This bibliography is based on the one in "A history and survey of the Novikov Conjecture" by Steve Ferry, Andrew Ranicki, and Jonathan Rosenberg. The original version appeared in volume 1 of "Novikov Conjectures, Index Theorems and Rigidity" (listed below under books) but we will try to update it regularly. For example, a square is topologically equivalent to a circle, since a square can be continously deformed into a circle. As another example, a doughnut and a coffee cup with a handle for are topologically equivalent, since a doughnut can be reshaped into a coffee cup without tearing or gluing. 56. [hep-th/9907119] Topological Quantum Field Theories -- A Meeting Ground For Phys
Topological quantum field theories can be used as a powerful tool to probe geometry and topology in low dimensions. ChernSimons theories, which are examples of such field theories, provide a field theoretic framework for the study of knots and links in three dimensions.
