Previous Principal Speakers
All principal talks will be in Neville Hall, Auditorium II. In addition, there will be parallel sessions of 40-minute contributed talks, divided roughly into Differential and Complex Geometry, Algebraic Topology, and Geometric Topology. These talks will take place in the Seely G. Mudd building, next to Neville. Breakfast will be provided Friday and Saturday mornings, and lunch will be provided Thursday, Friday and Saturday noons. Dinner will be the only meal not provided gratis. On Thursday, expeditions to nearby restaurants will be arranged, followed by a party. On Friday there will be a Chinese banquet at a cost of $30. More information will be available at this site as it becomes available. Please check back from time to time.

TOROIDAL DNA: TOPOLOGY, GEOMETRY AND ELECTROSTATICS
Toroidal DNA condensates have received considerable attention as a model of ordered DNA condensation. Geometry and topology of fibre bundles can be efficient tools in order to study these structures. Such methods have given fruitful results when considering toroidal vesicles made of amphiphile films and blue phases structures observed in liquid crystals made of long chiral molecules. We give, in this paper, the geometrical arguments supporting this description. Then, we show how electrostatic interactions could be studied using curved spaces. We show that it is possible to have conditions resulting in attractive interaction between DNA molecules in the presence of positive charges.

Welcome to our Homepage!
The Topology, Geometry and Combinatorics Group plays a major role in the Department's research activities. We have an international network of colleagues and collaborators, with whom we often exchange visits in order to further our programmes. We share the weekly Manchester Geometry Seminar with out neighbours at UMIST, and have other links through the Transpennine Topology Triangle . We also organise occasional seminars of a more specialised nature. We offer supervision in many projects leading to a postgraduate degree, within the framework of the Department's overall postgraduate program TOPOLOGY is often referred to as "rubber sheet geometry", and is one of the largest and most important areas of mathematics developed this century. Increasingly, it is being applied in fields such as algebra, geometry, and dynamics, and in other disciplines such as computer science, economics, and theoretical physics. GEOMETRY itself is a much older subject, but modern research is no less exciting, and has links with almost every other branch of mathematics. For example, the infamous "travelling saleperson problem" is based on the geometry of polytopes, yet involves ultramodern theories of computational complexity. COMBINATORICS is basically the study of structures associated to finite sets, and underpins much of theoretical computer science. Nevertheless, its methods are assuming increasing importance wherever complicated algebraic or geometric problems arise, and are becoming an indispensable part of the modern mathematician's toolkit.

Like the ordinary Betti numbers of a compact space, the L Betti numbers are the dimension of a homology group. However, the homology groups coming from L -forms are infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces, so the machinery of von Neumann algebras is needed to provide a quantitative dimension. I will spend the first lecture on background material, and basic examples, with some older theorems and big conjectures thrown in for spice. Don't worry if you don't know anything about von Neumann algebras. I plan to talk about Gromov's result that the L Betti numbers vanish when X is aspherical and G is amenable. I'll prove Luck's theorem, which says that ordinary Betti numbers (renormalized) of a tower of covering spaces converge to the L Betti numbers of the limit covering.
