Kurzbeschreibung Synopsis This book covers topology and geometry beginning with an accessible account of the extraordinary and rather mysterious impact of mathematical physics, especially gauge theory, on the study of the geometry and topology of manifolds. Much of the mathematics developed in the book to study the classical field theories of physics (de Rham cohomology, Chern classes, Semi-Riemannian manifolds, Cech cohomology, spinors etc.) is standard, but the treatment always keeps one eye on the physics and...

Combinatorics
In many respects, the latter half of the 20th Century has been a golden age of Geometry and Topology, with spectacular advances in the study of manifolds (particularly in dimension 4), Global Analysis including Index Theory, complex manifolds and Algebraic Geometry, including its applications in Number Theory. Increasingly, strong connections with integrable system theory and global aspects of differential equations as well as the remarkable two-way flow of ideas between Geometry and Theoretical Physics are dominating developments. Algebraic Topology has developed important machinery such as cohomology theories including ordinary cohomology, K -theory, cobordism and elliptic cohomology. These are often of use in geometric situations, as well as within Algebraic Topology itself which tends to study much less `rigid' geometric situations than Geometers do. There have also been significant interactions with many areas of Algebra, and indeed much of Algebraic Topology can be viewed as `applied algebra' as well as being a major source of innovative algebraic ideas. Departmental research activity in Geometry and Topology occurs in the following areas.

The Geometry and Topology of Three-Manifolds
by William P. Thurston
Electronic version 1.1 - March 2002 - with an index! http://www.msri.org/publications/books/gt3m/ This is an electronic edition of the 1980 lecture notes distributed by Princeton University. The text was typed in TeX by Sheila Newbery, who also scanned the figures. Typos have been corrected (and probably others introduced), but otherwise no attempt has been made to update the contents. Genevieve Walsh compiled the index. Numbers on the right margin correspond to the original edition's page numbers. Thurston's Three-Dimensional Geometry and Topology , Volume 1 ( Princeton University Press , 1997) is a considerable expansion of the first few chapters of these notes. Later chapters have not yet appeared in book form. Please help improve this document by sending to Silvio Levy at levy@msri.org any useful information such as
  • reports of typos, omissions, and departures from the printed notes that are not purely stylistic
  • references for results attributed without citation
  • references to solutions of then-open problems
HERE IS THE STUFF
I've broken it down into chapter or portions about 20 pages long. Note: Chapters 10 and 12 don't exist.

Spring 2003 Friday, April 11, Eric Sommers (UMass, Amhearst and IAS)
Title: On the semisimple conjugacy class attached to a nilpotent orbit Abstract:
The Dynkin-Kostant classification of nilpotent orbits in a
simple Lie algebra g proceeds by studying the equivalent
problem of finding all embeddings of the simple three-dimensional Lie
algebra, sl_2, into g. This equivalent
formulation produces a semisimple conjugacy class for each nilpotent orbit and this class turns out to be important for the unitary representation theory of the corresponding complex Lie group. In this talk, we present a new characterization of these semisimple classes which is (almost) purely combinatorial and explain some of the connections to representation theory. This is joint work with Paul Gunnells. Friday, April 18, Stavros Garoufalidis (GAtech)

The main purpose of the conference is to present an overview of principal directions of research conducted in differential geometry, topology and analysis on manifolds and their applications, mainly (but not only) to Lie algebroids and related topics. We would like to attract attention to:
  • Riemannian, symplectic and Poisson manifolds Lie groups, Lie groupoids, Lie algebroids and Lie-Rinehart algebras, Poisson algebras
