Application Code - 1619
Curriculum Description
- Motorsports, one of the fastest growing professions in the United States, is challenged by a shortage of qualified personnel. The AOS degree program is designed for students who want a two-year degree program. During the first year, students will take the existing freshman automotive courses to develop expertise in all vehicle components. In the second year, they will take this knowledge into high-tech motorsports courses that include high performance steering, brakes, suspension, engine, and drive train. A major emphasis in the program is to teach the students fabrication and set up on various types of race vehicles. Because each type of racing involves different regulations, students will learn how to interpret these regulations and develop vehicles that conform to the exact specifications. This unique program combines the courses in a sequence and format that meets the needs of the motorsports industry for qualified high performance automotive technicians.
Degree Received - Associate in Occupational Studies (AOS) (A certificate program is also available.)

The School of Applied Technology at Alfred State College is pleased to announce the approval of a motorsports curriculum-at both the associate degree level and the certificate level-which will begin enrolling students this fall.

Index: A B C D ... Automotive DRAFT WORKING GROUP REPORT HUMAN RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT - WORKING GROUP PREAMBLE Attached please find a summary document describing the CAPC HRD Working Group's work to date. The HRD Working Group is passionate and representative. The group is reluctant to duplicate effort and feels much is being done but much more effective action is needed. Major items to be accomplished are clearly:
  • Increase formal certified automotive education programs in the workplace and through educational institutions Increase sustainable apprenticeship training programs Increase deployment of co-op education as it is a differentiating product Reestablish traditional technical shops, "learn by doing" programs in high schools, and provide experienced teachers Educate all stakeholders on the value and opportunities that lie within automotive careers
Overall there exists unprecedented agreement amongst all the stakeholders. This indicates to me that our problems are serious, solutions are evident, and patience for debate has passed. Our passion, harmony and longer term scope have prompted our federal HRDC members to raise the possibility that the CAPC HRD Working Group's vision and recommendations could lead to the creation of a national automotive "manufacturing sector council" (assembly and parts).

F. CAREER AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION Nearly all students, whether they continue their education after high school or not, eventually will migrate to the workplace. Section 29.181 of the Texas Education Code requires school districts to provide a curriculum affording each student the opportunity to "master the basic skills and knowledge necessary for managing the dual roles of family member and wage earner; and gaining entry-level employment in a high-skill, high-wage job or continuing the student's education at the post-secondary level." SAISD offers Career and Technology Education (CATE) at both high schools and all four junior high schools, with several programs offered on only one high school campus. The district does not provide transportation for students who wish to attend a class taught on another campus.

Automotive Technology Program Modern engineering technology and manufacturing have transformed the automobile from a relatively elementary system to a complex mechanical and electronic marvel. This course requires a sound educational background for the technician who must diagnose malfunctions, operate test equipment and correct problems throughout the entire automotive system. Specialization has entered this field, and the person who wishes may concentrate on specific areas of interest. The instruction, course of study, facilities and equipment of the institution have been evaluated by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation and meet the National Institutes for Automotive Services Excellence (N.l.A.S.E.) standards for training of automotive technicians.
For those with ability and dedication, placement after graduation is nearly 100%. Employment opportunities allow graduates to stay in Montana or relocate nationwide. If you would like additional information, please contact Don Stodden at (406) 496-3752 E-mail: DStodden@mtech.edu
