Auto Industry Skilled Trades Apprenticeships
  • Apprenticeship is a formal method of training for a skilled trade that combines on-the-job-training (paid full-time employment) with related classroom instruction. The skills learned provide the basis for a rewarding career. Upon completion of of a four year training program, the apprentice graduates and receives a Journeyman Card from the UAW and employment from the company.
An apprenticeship program is a “creature” of the company and the union. Each Ford, DaimlerChrysler and GM facility has a Joint Committee or Apprenticeship Council composed of UAW and company representatives that administers union apprenticeship programs.
The number of apprenticeship positions is negotiated and spelled out in union contracts. For example, the UAW-GM 1999 Agreement specifies that a total of

Details of the Work Initiative Program will be announced today at the Eau Claire Print Facility. "What I think is really neat is that we are not just trying to get people jobs," said city manager Leona Plaugh. "We are training people for jobs that construction companies are trying hard to fill." The program aims to provide technical training and to enhance existing skills in carpentry and masonry, said city Councilman E.W. Cromartie II, chairman of the program. Cromartie and fellow council member Tameika Isaac teamed up for the last five months to work out the details of the program.

VOCATIONAL TECHNICAL PROGRAMS
Offered at the Abrookin Vocational-Technical Center The trade, industrial and service programs offered at the Abrookin Vocational-Technical Center offer a wide variety of programs designed to meet the interests and needs of all students in this district. The major criteria for enrollment is the desire to become an all-around craftperson in the chosen field. It is anticipated that upon graduation the student will have a marketable skill that would qualify him/her for an entry-level position or entry into an advanced education program such as a 2-year or community college, a 4-year college, a special technical school, an apprenticeship program, or further training in a branch of the military service. Students completing a two-year occupational program generally are given advanced credit and/or exemption from certain course work if they pursue further education. A student is awarded an Occupational Proficiency Certificate which reflects the number of years he/she has been in a particular program. The certificate also lists the areas of competence achieved while attending the course. Students considering future employment opportunities should be aware of the tremendous need for females and males entering nontraditional career areas (those areas where less than 35% of the workers are of a particular sex). Local employers are currently seeking such nontraditional employees as: i.e., female auto mechanics and auto body people, welders, cooks, and electricians, male nurses and health care professionals, cosmetologists and office personnel. All programs of study are equally available to all male and female students attending the Abrookin Vocational-Technical Center and those seeking nontraditional careers are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to explore one of the trade, industrial or service areas while attending high school.

Son's murder leads man to help children manage their anger
BY RUBEN ROSARIO
STAFF COLUMNIST
Published: 08/27/2001 An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. Mohandas K. Ghandi Azim Khamisa had just put down Buddhist teacher Sogyal Rinpoche's "Tibetan Book of Living and Dying" on his night stand when the phone rang with news about his only son. At the coroner's office, the Kenya-born, England-educated investment banker from San Diego learned that Tariq Khamisa, a 20-year-old college arts student working nights delivering pizza, was lured to a bogus address and shot and killed by a 14-year-old gang member during a failed robbery attempt. "They called it 'jack the Pizza Man,' Khamisa informs me. "He tried to drive away but the bullet from the 9 mm handgun shattered the car window and struck him on the neck, severing his aorta. He died within two minutes, I was told." Khamisa has repeated the tragic details of his son's 1995 murder many times to many people, from former Attorney General Janet Reno to a classroom full of kids. He will do so again today when he speaks at a conference hosted by the American Probation and Parole Association in St. Paul. And the pain and the sadness I detected over the phone will surely still be there in the soft, slightly accented voice.

The Need For Change Why is the government repealing the Cosmetologists Act and the Barbers Act? These acts have been around since the 1920s and are largely out of date. Over the years, there have been minor changes to these acts, but primarily they have remained the same since their inception as separate, stand-alone acts. They duplicate many of the requirements now found in other laws covering public health, workplace safety, trades training and consumer protection. Barbers and cosmetologists are the only two trades in B.C. that must pay yearly dues to continue to work.
