Lost Trades Program Lost building trades are historic building crafts such as brick and stone masonry, stucco and plastering, blacksmithing and ironworks, and restoration carpentry that are no longer in use and are in danger of being lost. With one of the largest concentrations of historic structures in the South, Richmond needs a training program to educate skilled workers in these building arts. Such a program would provide job opportunities, while helping to preserve Richmond's great craft traditions. Historic Richmond Foundation, Historic Jackson Ward Association and the City of Richmond are co-sponsoring Richmond's "Lost Trades Program," a new program dedicated to the revival of the lost building trades. The mission of the Lost Trades Program is to teach individuals the aforementioned trades, so that historic structures may be restored using original construction methods. A goal of the program is to target young adults who are not bound for college but hope to pursue a craftsman's trade. Initially, the Lost Trades Program will concentrate on organizing workshops for the upcoming fall season to include a masonry workshop and a carpentry workshop based around the

HOME BUILDERS INSTITUTE AND DELMAR LEARNING PUBLISH FIRST TRADES TRAINING MATERIALS BASED ON INDUSTRY STANDARDS November 18, 2002, Washington, DC and Albany, NY - With an anticipated record in new housing starts for the year, the nation's home builders got more good news today. Almost a year to the day the Home Builders Institute (HBI), the workforce development arm of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), and Delmar Learning, a part of the Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX; TOC), announced their historic publishing agreement, the first instructional materials in the Residential Construction Academy Series - Carpentry and Electrical Principles - are ready for distribution. HBI and Delmar Learning's Residential Construction Academy Series is a complete trades training program based on standards developed by NAHB's employer members and educators collaborating to bridge the gap between industry know-how and craft instruction in the 21st century. In addition to quality instructional materials including textbooks, videos, CD-ROMs and on-line resources, the Series offers credentialing for training and education programs, as well as a national registry of students who have completed units of instruction. The Series brings together HBI and the housing industry's expertise and Delmar Learning's extensive construction trade publishing and sales network. According to Jud Motsenbocker, HBI Chairman of the Board of Trustees, "We are proud to be part of this effort. These national standards are exactly what residential construction training needs. The state-of-the art materials they helped shape are what every instructor could ever hope for to teach our industry's next generation of builders and remodelers."

This facility is a 21,000 square foot, three story historic building in Northwest Detroit (Old Redford). When completed, it will house our coalition of non-profit housing partners. The center will create synergy and expand our capacity to stabilize, revitalize and energize Detroit's forgotten neighborhoods. By yoking the strengths of a number of non-profit partners (Habitat for Humanity, Northwest Detroit Non-Profit Housing, R.I.M.C.O., and Northwest Detroit Neighborhood Development) that will all be housed on the second floor of this facility, we can plan and implement programs faster than ever before. We will work independently, as we work in harmony, to oversee the conceptualization and construction of hundreds of new homes in the Northwest Detroit area. The first floor will be utilized as a building trades training facility that will teach low income individuals not only the building trades, but will also teach them how to access the funds to rebuild their neighborhoods as well. Seminars, credit counseling and training will give local residents the tools they need to rebuild and restore their homes and communities. On the third floor, a 350 seat auditorium will be used for a myriad of community-based activities, to include a resident youth theater troupe, a music school, and an arts and cultural center.

His work so impressed Swarthmore's Geometry Forum that they now host a special section on Math to Build On, including the superb sections on measuring angles, degrees and right triangles. If you ever wondered whether you couldn't understand Math because of your own inadequacy or the teacher's inability you owe it to yourself to read Johnny Hamilton."
Popular Mechanics
- Roy Berendsohn (May 1997) "...we can pose three reasons to buy Math To Build On . One is that you need help with your math, and the second is that you're good at math but you need a handy reference for areas, volumes, conversions, and basic trigonometry. The third reason is that one of your kids needs help in math. To a large extent, the book's success derives from the the fact that the authors are not professional mathematicians. They haven't forgotten how ordinary people can struggle with math."
Fine Homebuilding - Scott Gibson (December 1993 / January 1994) "Based on the idea that math is a practical skill...Learn enough about triangles, for instance, and you'll learn how to lay out conduit or ductwork correctly and quickly. The text is easy to follow and has plenty of diagrams and sample problems...the authors' approach really makes sense."

Your Elite newsletter has given me an excellent education in how to pick the quality securities and commodities to trade. It has been a year since I ordered your Elite Newsletter, and I am so thankful for the confidence and experience it has given me. Today, it is second nature to know which strike to get in on, where to set my limit order and when to take profit. I just took profit on TO-Bonds this morning, a little over $2,500.00. Middle School Students Learn Math in After-School Construction Projects with the Oregon Building Congress
For ten weeks in the spring and fall, the Oregon Building Congress runs an after-school construction program for middle school students. The main goal is to teach students how essential math is in the building industry. Geometry, trigonometry, and algebra are used in projects such as constructing and wiring a wall. The program allows students to improve their math understanding and grades while learning new construction skills. The Oregon Building Congress hopes the program will get students excited about careers in the construction industry, and will encourage school districts to re-establish shop classes. Oregon Building Congress Sponsors Annual Summer Math Workshops for Teachers Since 1997, the Oregon Building Congress has sponsored a series of popular five-day summer workshops that show how math is used on the job in the construction industry. Nearly 200 teachers have attended these hands-on workshops, which are taught by union apprenticeship instructors. The instructors demonstrate how algebra, trigonometry, and geometry are used in the building trades. Teachers learn how the Pythagorean theorem is used to build stairs or how sine curves are used to measure three-dimensional space. Hands-on activities and examples of applied mathematics show how to make the school curriculum more relevant and exciting, especially for kinesthetic learners. The workshops also encourage teachers to inform their students about the many high-paying, family-wage jobs available in the building trades. Four workshop sessions were held in Portland and one in Medford in summer 2000. An additional site was added in 2001 for teachers in the Pendleton area.

About Primak Builders Primak Builders became official in 1998, but the story doesn’t start there. Stan and Joan Primak finished their first home project in Los Alamos in 1986 when, at that time, Joan was a teacher in Kindergarten and Stan was the Los Alamos High School Building Trades teacher. Stan led this special program, which gave valuable knowledge and experience in the building trades to the participating students. Stan’s role was to teach the entire process of a home building project, by building a home with his students. With up to 60 students a day, Stan became an expert at building homes, while inspiring his students to perform to the best of their abilities. As the Building Trades programs became more successful, Stan and Joan began to look for additional home building opportunities. They began to design and build spec homes to further their interests and to supplement their teaching salaries. As the projects grew so did their crew, and in 1998 they decided to continue their passion for building homes and start Primak Builders, Inc. full time. The Primak Builders Approach Everyone at Primak Builders understands that without the assets of discipline, hard work, and passion, projects cannot realize their potential. By applying these assets, we build success stories for our employees as well as our clients. Simply put, by seeking perfection, all Primak Builders’ projects are guaranteed excellence.
