Why Too Many Olympic Sports Are Neither
By Jonathon Kahn
Posted Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at 8:30 PM PT
The modern Olympics has consisted of an eclectic and heady mix: archery and equestrian, track and field and swimming, wrestling and weightlifting. But where the Olympics' eclecticism was once a strength, today's version of diversity is its greatest flaw. While people often complain about the opening up of the Olympiad to professionals or the lavishing of vast inequities of attention, prestige, and money on different sports, the real problem is the inclusion of two (occasionally overlapping) categories: 1) Events, often high-profile, for which the Olympics is not that sport's premier competition. These are nothing more than gussied-up exhibitions. 2) Events that are called sports but really aren't. Call these the bogus or silly sports. The combination of the two does ruthless damage to the notion that the Olympics celebrates world-class contests of athletic excellence. Equally ridiculous are the bogus events. Everyone's favorite is synchronized swimming, which

One way to trim the fat from a bloated Olympic docket
Click here for more on this story Latest: Thursday September 28, 2000 06:57 PM SYDNEY, Australia The International Olympic Committee is frequently taken to task for adding new sports to its already overcrowded schedule. (Did we really need to make an Olympic sport out of trampoline?) The fault, however, is not that new sports are added, since the Games should stay relevant to the interests of society at large. The fault lies in that more sports aren't thrown out on their respective ears. It didn't used to be that way. Cricket, croquet and the once beloved "equestrian high jump" were evicted after the 1900 Games. The "plain high dive," which allowed no twists or somersaults, used to be an Olympic sport. So was live pigeon shooting. Now they won't even release live pigeons as part of the Opening Ceremonies, fearful of traumatizing the little beasts. Golf left after after 1904, the same year the fearful "plunge for distance," a diving event, met its Olympic demise. After 1920 the still popular tug-of-war was given the heave-ho daddy-o, and in 1932 "rope climbing" and the curiously named "club swinging" were discarded. The last sport to get the axe? Polo in 1936. Small wonder the Olympics is now so bloated it can't get up from its own stuffed couch.

Olympic sports at a glance
By Times staff SHORT TRACK/SPEED SKATING SHORT TRACK/SPEED SKATING THE BASICS: Races are split into two disciplines short track at the Salt Lake Ice Center and long track at the Utah Olympic Oval. There are four events each for men and women in short track and five events each in long track. Long track pairs two skaters at a time racing against the clock. Short track is more like a roller derby race. U.S. FORECAST: Here's a tip. If you want to impress your neighbors, start talking about Apolo Anton Ohno in the next day or two. Because, by next week, the rest of the world will have discovered him. A 19-year-old Japanese-American who was raised by his father in Seattle, Ohno is outgoing, attractive and about to be a star. He should place in all four short-track events and could even sweep gold, becoming this year's Eric Heiden or Bonnie Blair. The one drawback? He still will hear questions about accusations that he gave less than a full effort in a recent qualifying race so his friend, Shani Davis, could leapfrog another skater and make the Olympic team. American men do not look as good in the long track. Casey Fitzrandolph finished sixth in the 500 and seventh in the 1,000 at the Nagano Games. Derek Parra is a contender at 1,500.

    Olympic History: Gymnastics
One of the oldest sports in the Olympics, gymnastics began in ancient Greece more than 2000 years ago. Men gathered at "gymnasiums" the center of activity for the time not only practice the sport, but also to debate about art, literature and philosophy. The major focus of gymnastics focused on finding symmetry between the mind and body by pairing physical exercise with intellectual activity Plato, Aristotle and Homer advocated strengthening qualities of gymnastic activity. Christians of the time considered gymnastics Satanic because of its focus on the body gymnasts performed in the nude at the all-male ancient Games of Olympia. After financial corruption led to the banning of gymnastics in 393 A.D., the sport did not reappear in the public arena until the 16th century. "Artistic" gymnastics came to be in the early 1800s, distinguishing free-flowing styles from the techniques used by the military.

IG Online Poll #17 : Recently, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) took sports acrobatics, trampoline and sport aerobics under its wing. The U.S. Gymnastics federation will undergo a similar melding in 1999 and trampoline will make its debut as an Olympic sport in 2000. With the number of Olympic berths allotted to gymnastics in any form limited, some contend that trampoline should not be part of the Games. Others feel that its high time these lesser known branches of the sport gain worldwide attention. What do you think? Should trampoline, sports acrobatics, sport aerobics and the like be added to the Olympic roster?
In a close vote, IG Online readers supported trampoline, tumbling and sports acrobatics for Olympic inclusion. Most in favor said that more gymnastics, in any form, is good for the sport and that giving more hardworking athletes a shot at the Olympic ideal is always a good thing. Opponents were vocal in their distaste for trampoline and the like vs "real" gymnastics. Many even went so far as to question trampoline status as a sport at all, let alone an Olympic one. Women are judged in five: floor, vault, uneven bars, balance beam and all-around. In awarding scores, judges take into consideration the degree of difficulty of a gymnast's program, along with aesthetic appeal. Points are deducted for such faults as poor execution, lack of control, falling, missing requirements or exceeding the time limit. The individual all-around champions are determined by totaling scores on all the apparatuses.

SYDNEY, Australia Ji Wallace's coach gave him the ride of his life. Now it's his turn to return the favor. Elated after he finished his routine in the men's trampoline finals, the Australian threw himself into his coach's arms. Nikolay Zhuravlev scooped Wallace up and raced off the podium, almost knocking a cameraman over in the process. And this was all before Wallace got his silver medal. "I was laughing, I was crying, I was trying to look for my Mum," Wallace said after winning the silver medal Saturday in the Olympic debut of the men's trampoline. "It was just the best feeling in the world. I can't describe it." Four-time world champion Alexandre Moskalenko of Russia, who ended his three-year retirement to compete in the Olympics, took the gold. Mathieu Turgeon of Canada won the bronze. Though his best finish in international competition was a third place, Wallace was considered a longshot to win a medal. He even promised to give Zhuravlev the mountain bike he rode to practice every day if he won a medal. So when the final results were posted, it set off a raucous celebration in the SuperDome. Wallace threw his arms in the air as the hometown crowd of 14,000 waved kangaroo flags and serenaded him with chants of "Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!"

March 6, 2000 I was flicking around the television remote the other night when I went past the PBS station and saw that they were airing yet another of their ballroom dancing competitions. Although I only paused for two seconds, it was long enough to hear the announcer report that ballroom dancing has been accepted as an exhibition sport by the International Olympic Committee. Ballroom dancing as an Olympic sport? I don’t think so. It makes about as much sense as Larry King giving Rick Rockwell marriage advice. I'm no expert on athletic endeavors, but I'm fairly sure that if it involves participants in formalwear, it's not a sport. The Olympic motto is "Swifter, Higher, Stronger." It isn't "Honey, can you help me with this cummerbund?" On my radio show the next day I asked my listeners, “If ballroom dancing is in the Olympics, what else should be on the roster?” They came up with a pretty good list.

He competed successfully in both areas, and made appearances in three national meets and one international meet. But when it came time for him to go to college, Douglas had no intention of pursuing gymnastics. Martin told Douglas where the team practiced, so Douglas dropped by in early November, two weeks into the season, and talked to MSU head coach Rick Atkinson.
