CBC.ca CBC Sports Kids Olympic Features Training Not all Olympic training means running the actual course or performing the exact event. That's because athletes have learned that it's best to exercise the right muscles and practice their moves - even if this exercise comes from many other sports.
Check out these weird and wacky training techniques: Aerials Snow doesn't usually fall in Australia, but Australia has one of the strongest Olympic aerial skiing teams in the world. Like all winter Olympic sports, aerial skiing involves a lot of snow and ice. Actually, a landing pad of thick snow is what keeps competitors from getting hurt - after jumping from 15 metres high. But Australia is known for hot sun and deserts. How do they do it? Aerial skiers' bodies take a pounding over time - especially when they don't land as upright enough. It's just like a doing a "belly-flop" in diving. The skiers wear wetsuits so they don't feel the impact of hitting the water so much, and to keep them warm. Bumps and bruises happen - but those are the most minor injuries. More serious ones are back problems, neck problems and knee injuries. The skis used for this kind of skiing are a lot stronger than those used in other skiing events. Ordinary skis would break into pieces when they hit the water. Some skiers have drilled holes into their skis to help soften the landing.

At the 1976 Games in Montreal Comaneci amazed the crowd, and officials, by becoming the first gymnast to record a perfect score of 10 in Olympic competition. Even more amazingly, she achieved the feat six times during the Games. TIMOFEI BYELO: EXAMPLE OF SPORTSMANSHIP SHOWN BY KARAVAEVA
Irina Karavaeva hits the international press with an example of sportsmanship which all sportspeople around the world would do well to notice. After noticing that the judges in the world gymnastics championships in Denmark made a mistake in her favour, she handed the gold medal to the second-placed Dogonadze.
This is the first time such an attitude has been taken in gymnastics. Irina Karavaeva noticed that the judges had made a mistake which attributed the gold medal to her, and even though she is the eight-times world trampoline champion, Olympic champion and European champion, she decided to hand the medal to the second-placed German gymnast. Sports acrobatics
The sports acrobatics regroup disciplines which are both ancient and young. Already practised in the antiquity, the acrobatics carried on in the Middle Ages and knew a big development in the XVIIIth century with the creation of the circus. In the XXth century, acrobatic elements were included in several sports and in dance. The acrobatics as a very sporting discipline is relatively young. The IFSA, the international federation of sports acrobatics, was founded in 1973. Since then, world competitions were held every year and the sports acrobatics are now part of the world games program. The world games are a multisport event reserved to non olympic sports. They are organized one year after the summer olympic games, but for now, without the same impact in the media as the olympic games. In october 1998, the I.F.S.A. congress voted to dissolve itself and to merge with the international gymnastics federation (F.I.G.). The sports acrobatics include five events :
    • women's pairs
    • mixed pairs
    • men's pairs
    • women's trios
    • men's quartet
Pairs and groups exercises are performed with a musical accompaniment on a gymnastic type platform. They obviously include acrobatic elements execuded by all gymnasts together but, they also consist of individual elements and choreographed transitions performed in perfect synchronization with partners and music. In the first routine, the groups are building human pyramids which must be held for 3 seconds. The pairs first exercise must contain at least six partner balance elements (see the photographs). Minimum 3 of them must be held static for 3 seconds. The second routine contains tempo pair or group elements in which an acrobat is throw, for example in somersault, by his/her partner(s). It also includes individual tumbling elements or series. The third exercise must combine tempo and balance elements.

The Olympic Games were held every four years for more than 1,000 years, until a.d. 393, when a Roman emperor stopped them.
Some Modern Olympic Firsts The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. A total of 312 athletes from 13 nations participated in nine sports. Women competed in the Olympic Games for the first time. For the first time, medals were awarded to the first three people to finish each event The Olympic flag was raised for the first time, and the Olympic oath was introduced. The five interlaced rings of the flag represent: Africa, America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The first Winter Olympics, featuring skiing and skating events, were held. The Olympic flame was introduced at the Olympic Games. A relay of runners carries a torch with the flame from Olympia, Greece, to the site of each Olympics. Starting with the 1994 Winter Olympics, the winter and summer Games have been held two years apart, instead of in the same year.

    Contributing Writer

Indeed, Willett, a sophomore transfer student, was fortunate, considering the fact that he waited until this past summer to fill out an application for admission for Fall 2000.
Willett spent his freshman year of college playing soccer for Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. A NCAA Division I school with a strong soccer program, it seemed like a good place for a high school senior who had no clear direction about where to go to college. When Murff, a friend from high school, suggested Asbury, Willett saw an opportunity to fulfill all those requirements. He is now a starter for the Eagles. A midfielder in high school, the Liberty coaches placed Willett on defense, and that experience earned him the sweeper position at Asbury.

The expanded competition was announced today by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) which has committed $3 million to stage the five day event from the 8 th th of January 2003. "Our first Olympic Festival in 2001 was a resounding success and more sports have been added this time round" said AOC Secretary General Bob Elphinston. "Such is the popularity of the AYOF 25 of the 28 summer Sports Federations wanted to participate and ultimately the AOC would like to include them all" he said. The new sports added to the 2003 program are Archery, Badminton, Fencing, Judo, Shooting, Softball, Table Tennis, Tae Kwon Do, Water Polo, Weightlifting and Wrestling, "Badminton, Fencing, Judo and Wrestling are sports where we are less developed and looking to improve" Elphinston said. The AOC has invited all countries from the East Asian Region and it’s expected Australia’s future Olympians will compete against teams from China, Japan and South Korea. "These countries are the world super powers in many of those disciplines," he said.

    Snowboarders finally get their chance
by mason wright Ever since their sport began to compete with skiing for time and space on the slopes, snowboarders have experienced the highs and lows of challenging the status quo. As athletes in a new sport that still suffers from the "fad" label, snowboarders have had to fight for everything they've recieved. But at SFU, a large group of snowboarders has been able to shake the label, and have formed a legitimate collegiate snowboarding team. The team, which boasts over 130 members, is the only Canadian member of the National Collegiate Snowboard Organization (NCSO), and is split into recreational and competitive streams. "We have two kinds of people at SFU," says Maros Hana, one of over a hundred recreational team members. "Some of them want to compete, and they want to commit lots of time, do training and really do something for the team. The recreational people join us because we have discounts for them, lots of activities and parties, and if they want they can [eventually] join the competitive team." Now in its second semester of existence, SFU's snowboarding team is the first and only collegiate snowboarding team in Canada, and continues to draw members. It was designed to help riders improve and compete at a high level while providing a good environment for new 'boarders. Indeed, as far as university teams go, this team's "recreational" stream is a fairly new idea.

Did You Know? The trampoline bed, which is usually made of a nylon or string material, is only six millimeters thick. The prototype for today's trampoline was introduced in the 1930s and it quickly became an invaluable tool for entertainers. It gained popularity in 1950s and 60s and the first world championship competition was held in 1964. The trampoline is the third division of the gymnastics competition, following artistic and rhythmic. There will be no team competition in Sydney, just individual. Both the men's and women's competition will involve 12 gymnasts who will compete in a qualifying round and final round on the same day, Sept. 22.
