The trampoline bed, which is usually made of a nylon or string material, is only six millimeters thick.
The prototype for today's trampoline was introduced in the 1930s and it quickly became an invaluable tool for entertainers. It gained popularity in 1950s and 60s and the first world championship competition was held in 1964.
The trampoline is the third division of the gymnastics competition, following artistic and rhythmic. There will be no team competition in Sydney, just individual. Both the men's and women's competition will involve 12 gymnasts who will compete in a qualifying round and final round on the same day, Sept. 22.
Gymnasts will be scored on a compulsory routine, which features predetermined maneuvers done in a specific order, and an optional routine, featuring skills picked by each competitor. Each routine must include the following:

There are four events each for men and women in short track and five events each in long track. Long track pairs two skaters at a time racing against the clock. Short track is more like a roller derby race. U.S. FORECAST: Here's a tip. If you want to impress your neighbors, start talking about Apolo Anton Ohno in the next day or two. Tiriac says he must resign after Raducan case SportsLine.com wire reports
    Sept. 28, 2000
SYDNEY, Australia Romanian Olympic Committee president Ion Tiriac said Friday (Thursday night ET) he will resign in the wake of the Andreea Raducan doping case. Raducan tested positive for a banned stimulant because she took cold medicine before winning the women's gymnastics all-around last week. The International Olympic Committee disqualified her and stripped her gold medal. Tiriac has been one of the most aggressive leaders in the fight to eliminate drugs from Olympic sports. He invoked a rule calling for a lifetime ban against any Romanian guilty of doping. It puts him in the awkward situation of having to ban Raducan, even though he feels she did nothing wrong.

    http://www.intlgymnast.com/poll2000/sportsacro.html
IG Online Poll #33 In Sydney trampoline made its debut as an Olympic sport. Twelve men and 12 women bounced for the first two golds up for grabs. Though trampoline has always been considered a gymnastics offshoot, it wasn't officially part of the sport until recently, when it joined with the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). In recent years the FIG has also added sports aerobics, sports acrobatics and power tumbling to its roster of gymnastics pursuits, which were previously limited to artistic (men's and women's events) and rhythmic gymnastics. Sports aerobics, choreographed physical fitness routines combined with brief acrobatic displays, was added to the FIG as a sponsor-rich lure. Unlike beam flips or high bar releases, aerobics is an activity most armchair athletes can relate to, plus it is performed in Rebooks and Nikes, instead of specialized grips and leotards items which the general public has no use for. Though advertising contracts may be (relatively) easy to come by, Olympic inclusion for this esoteric "sport" seems a long way off. Power tumbling has long been a gymnastics-related event. Performed on spring-loaded strips, the event is traditionally contested alongside trampoline (the two used to share an international governing body), and features high-flying tricks traditional gymnasts only dream off. (For example, full twisting triple backs, layout double-doubles through to double layouts, etc.) Though impressive for most fans, because of its similarity to traditional gym and trampoline it is unlikely to be added to the Games anytime soon.

A perfect fusion of athletics and aesthetics, gymnastics ranks among the defining sports of the Olympic Games. Mixing strength and agility with style and grace, the high-flying acrobats have provided many of the most breathtaking Olympic spectacles of the past quarter-century. Nadia Comeneci's perfect 10 score at the 1976 Montreal Games, the first ever awarded, remains the high-water mark for most gymnastics fans. The 14-year-old Romanian achieved the seemingly impossible seven times in Montreal, a feat so unexpected that the scoring technology was set up for only three digits. Her 10.00s were displayed as 1.00.

    Gymnastics
To the ancient Greeks, physical fitness was paramount and all Greek cities had a "gymnasia," a courtyard for jumping, running, and wrestling. Over the years, gymnastics has undergone many changes. Originally, men's competition included swimming and running events, and did not acquire its present form until the 1924 Games in Paris. During the 1920s, women organized and participated in gymnastic events. The first women's Olympic competition was held at the 1928 Games in Amsterdam.

Gymnastics competitions are divided into three parts. On the first two days, all gymnasts perform compulsory and optional exercises on each piece of equipment, referred to in gymnastics as "apparatus." Those scores determine the winners of the team event. The 36 gymnasts who achieve the highest combined individual scores move on to the individual all-around competition. Based on the combined scores from the team and the all-around, the top eight scorers on each apparatus advance to the finals.
