    Causality
Before one can understand the effects that time travel has on causality, it is necessary to understand the forces that govern causality in the present. While some people may find comfort in the delusion that they have free will to determine the outcome of spontaneous events, in fact the outcome of every event was determined with the creation of the Universe. The same natural laws govern all matter in the Universe whether that matter makes up stars and planets, or whether it composes the cells in a person's brain. Gravity, electromagnetism, and quantum forces determine the interaction and outcome of all events in the Universe. While some events, such as flipping a coin or rolling a die, may seem to be random, their outcomes are determined by the forces of nature. This can be illustrated by tracing the contributing causal forces of an event backwards in time: This is just one small chain of causal events that determines the outcome of a coin toss. While it seems there is a near-infinite number of forces acting on the coin, and while the outcome of the coin toss may actually be unpredictable to any kind of human perception, in fact the outcome of the coin toss was destined to happen in only one way since the birth of the Universe.

    Spud's Story - Part III
1997 proved to be an extremely busy year for Spud's passport and this trend appeared to be continuing into the new year with a trip down to Florida in early January. His ever expanding profile has grown immensely since launching this web site in September of 1997 and he has been internationally recognized. This increase in activity in the public eye led to his inking of a deal with an American fast food franchise where he was spokesman for their 'new and improved' french fries. Spud honestly thinks they still taste like crap, but the money was too good to refuse. In fact, the gig turned out to be a cash cow and Spud's milked it for all its worth! In early February, the intrepid Potato blazed a trail to his travel agent and quickly booked a flight back to the Lone Star state so that he could spend a bit more time seeing the sites. A trip to the Houston area wouldn't be complete without an excursion to NASA to try and become the first 'orb in orbit'.

    The First Time Traveller
    By Nick O'Neill
So you're thinking about or planning on taking a trip to a far away place. You've heard all about how cool it is to hike the Himalayas or to climb volcanoes and you've seen 'The Beach'. You really have no idea what's waiting for you but your excitement is building. I was in a similar position back in 1984 when I started travelling. Let's talk about some of the stuff you'll need and some of the situations you'll end up in. Why do we go travelling?
To get a change of scenery, to meet people, to learn more about other cultures, to get away from the stuff we're used to, to learn more about ourselves etc. These are great reasons and when we are travelling it's good to remind ourselves why we're doing this. You will definately find yourself in a nowhere town making an unexpected overnight stay because your bus has broken down or the train hasn't come. Don't stress on it, this is travel. One of the reasons that we love to travel is the unknown and part of that is that everything is not guaranteed. So relax, you're not at work, enjoy it.

Mexico - The Life and Times of a Travelling Academic
By Philip Blazdell I have the best job in the world, I thought as my plane took off from a gloomy Narita airport and I sipped my third beer of the day. I can believe that I have convinced the company to send me to Mexico again. It seemed like only a few weeks since I had last returned from there, and besides, I really hadn't done that much work since. But, not one for feeling guilty, I asked for another beer and began to relax... I nearly didn't make it to Mexico this time with as I once again met my favorite family of Kurdish refugees. I am sure you will remember the family in question, the one which is always in front of me as I go through immigrations. This time, I was in LA and had about 20 minutes to get from the plane through immigration to the next plane if I was going to catch my connecting flight. I rushed along the mini marathon track which connects the arrivals with the immigration, and there they were, in front of me, 27 items of hand luggage and no documents. As the time is getting closer and closer to my flight, they are still arguing with the immigration official about why they can't put Kurd-land as their country of residence. Why does it always happen to me, and why is immigration at LAX so much hassle? I remember one one occasion they stopped me 6 times between leaving my plane and the check in-desk for my connecting flight. The only conclusion I can draw from this is that I look like Carlos de Drug Baron...

    5. Possible Experimental Consequences
A possibly paradoxical corollary of the T=0 boundary condition model arises if the same arguments presented above are also applied in the forward time direction to radiation (or particles) encountering a black hole which eventually collapses to a singularity (rather than eventually evaporating through the Hawking process). While black holes are proper absorbers in the Wheeler-Feynman context since advanced waves can escape from them in the negative time direction (the time-reverse of radiation capture by a black hole), a "reflection" of incident retarded waves at the singularity of the black hole, in analogy to the T=0 boundary condition, would produce a cancellation of the incident wave functions. This leads to the curious conclusion that such black holes might create a condition such that light could not be emitted in their direction , i.e., that they might appear as anti-emission loci . In other words, such black holes might be truly black, in that light "would refuse to shine" in their directions.

    Ape Escape
Monkeys that mean business With Ape Escape theyive come up with a concept quite distinct from most games on the Playstation - itis gameplay led. The impetus has been Sonyis Dual Shock controller, which was initially seen as an answer to the N64 rumble pak but is proving much more versatile. The key to Ape Escape is the ingenious way it uses the Dual Shockis two analogue thumb pads. In Ape Escape they allow you to move the character and use his items independently.
The hero is a young boy names Spike, a friend of the Professor. The Prof.is time travelling gadget has put the world in serious danger. A renegade monkey named Specter has taken a band of apes back through time with the aim of conquering it for monkey-kind. They are also using another of the Professoris inventions, a helmet that boosts the weareris intelligence.
Spike, and mate Buzz have to capture all the monkeys running amok in the prehistoric era. There are 20 levels, in the kind of predictable settings you expect from a console game - snow, jungle, seaside etc. If the scenery isnit original, the range of items are. Spike has to get use his rotating monkey radar dish to locate his prey, then get in close to use the net or other weapons, like sling-shot or hula hoop.
Players will have to learn to control vehicles including tanks and rowing boats, which make specific use of the Dual Shock for a more sophisticated control method. The monkeys themselves are major stars. Each is an individual, with a character of his own. The monkeys come colour coded, so you can work out what type they are.

    Time Travel
The original series of Star Trek must have been awesome to the sixties generation. It was exciting for the seventies, my own, generation. By the eighties and nineties special effects had come on in leaps and bounds and the demand was for more intrinsic stories, including a few trips back to 20th century Earth.
But, is time travel possible and what would happen if we could go back? If you believe in time travel into the future you are definitely living in cloud cuckoo land. If you believe in time travel into the past perhaps you are just in cuckoo land.
Various wild theories have been proposed for time travel. None tested yet! If you follow Einsteinian methods then faster than light travel (FLT) is impossible. Yet scientists have theorised, and I believed detected, of particles that do travel FLT. So eventually some bright spark will invent a time machine and take the inevitable plunge into the past and I dare say oblivion.
Our intrepid scientist fully conversed with all the dos and don'ts of time travel, and not meeting yourself save a big matter explosion in the fabric of time, arrives back at the day he was born. To simplify matters, as these things always get complicated, our scientist is travelling along time-line A.
That is to say he was born, grew up, went to college, invented time travel and went back to the day he was born. If at the moment he arrived at his birth he decided to return to the time he left, nothing would have changed, because that is his time-line. It is the only one he can ever know. Time-line A.

HOSTELS.COM Advertiser Info User Survey Who We Are Contact Us Travelling with Greyhound Buses Travelling on the greyhound bus can be an experience. I travelled non-stop for one day and 20 hours from Chicago to LA (Hollywood) in April 2001. I was in the US on the work USA program and the organization I was doing it through had warned us at our orientation about travelling on Greyhound buses, such as to watch our luggage at all times among other things. In the past many participants had lost luggage whilst travelling on Greyhound. I had travelled on Greyhound earlier that year, but only for 12 hours from San Francisco to Mammoth Lakes. I was worried about the luggage on that journey, but it wasn’t as bad as I had heard. So for this journey I was less concerned about my luggage as previously, but still concerned enough to watch out for it. After this journey from Chicago to LA I have come to the conclusion that everything people say about Greyhound and the way they handle things is true. The bus was due to depart Chicago at 11:00am, but it ended up being full and the staff couldn’t tell us when and if a second bus was going to be put on, nor did anyone seem it appropriate to inform the passengers of the situation. I overheard two staff members trying to debate whether a second bus should be put on. One option was to make everyone wait for the bus at 3:30pm with 3 connections. The 11am had no connections, just the same bus for one day and twenty hours. However, after much anger from passengers and debate between employees, I guess they decided to put on a second bus. Two hours after the scheduled departure time we were off in the second bus. I think that second bus was left from the 70’s as it looked like they had pulled it out of storage. The air conditioning wasn’t working, it was hot and, even though I was sitting near the front of the bus, you could still smell the toilet!!

Physics in Action: September 2000 The observation of a light pulse leaving a gas-filled chamber before it had even arrived sparked a media frenzy, yet the laws of physics have remained intact. Nothing can travel faster than light. Despite a recent raft of reports in the media, this statement is as true now as it ever was. Nonetheless, experiments over the past 20 years have been forcing us to re-examine what we mean by the word "nothing". In the latest experiment, a group of researchers at the NEC Research Institute in Princeton, US, observed the peak of a laser pulse leave a small cell filled with caesium gas before it had even entered the cell (L J Wang, A Kuzmich and A Dogariu 2000 Nature 277). Apparently, the peak of this pulse is simply not the kind of "thing" to which Einstein's famous law applies.

What do we mean by time travel?
Technically we're all travelling in time just by existing. But we can't seem to control our motion through time in the same way we can control our motion through space. What most people usually mean by time travel is the ability to drive around in time they same way they'd drive around in a city. Let's look at a spacetime diagram that shows a few examples of different ways observers or objects can travel in time and space.
It's important to remember that any single point on this diagram represents an event - both a moment in time and a location in space . The origin of the axes in the figure represents the place X=0 at the time T=0 . This is what we mean by a spacetime event.
The figure to the left is a spacetime diagram showing spacetime paths of various observers moving in 1+1 dimensional spacetime. Paths A B C and D represent the normal kind of time travel that we find in our world. Path E shows an example of a kind of time travel that is not allowed in Special Relativity.
    The allowed time travellers
The light blue spacetime path A represents a flash of light from a laser coming from off of the diagram. The flash of light travels into the future to the spacetime event

My husband and I were travelling through Illinois on vacation, with no specific itinerary. On the first night we stayed in Springfield, we stayed at a major chain hotel, but were very unhappy with the accommodations. The bed was like plywood, and the pillows couldn't have been more than an inch thick. So, for our second night, we moved to a Hampton Inn. It was our first time staying at one, and I have to say it was a fantastic experience. The rooms were nice, but the most important thing was how we were treated when there was a minor problem. They have a 100% satisfaction guarantee, and our experiences have shown that they really mean it. The day we stayed at the Hampton Inn, the temperatures outside were over 100 degrees, so after a morning of sightseeing, we spent the late afternoon in the indoor pool of the hotel. The problem we encountered was that the pool room was TOO cold it couldn't have been over 70, which is chilly when you're wet. However, we still made use of the pool and hot tub, and then returned to our room. When we left to go to dinner, I stopped at the front desk to let them know that they might want to turn up the heat in the pool room, as it was uncomfortably cold. They apologized profusely, and offered us a free night's stay. Needless to say, we were surprised, but we declined, as we felt that it wasn't a serious issue. We thanked them, though, for the offer.

    An Angel for May
by Melvin Burgess (1992) This is an interesting time travel story because it focuses not so much on going back in order to change the past as returning to change the present because you understand the past. Tam Sams is in a bit of an emotional soup because his parents have recently separated. This isn't relevant to the story except that when characters in books become emotionally charged fantastic things happen like falling through wormholes in space. In this case Tam, hiding temporarily from the world in the fireplace of a derelict farmhouse, is led by a dog right through the fireplace back and out into the living farmyard. There he meets May, a strangely retarded child, with whom he strikes up an unlikely but genuine friendship. They have a rowdy game riding Spot the pig round the yard. The farm is worked alone by Sam Nutter, a steady, unflappable type of chap who seems to have adopted May. He supposes Tam to be an evacuee for this is wartime England, and having seen how well Tam and May play together offers Tam refuge at the farm. Tam finds that refuge is exactly what he needs because the town is full of hostile and threatening people. Tam realizes with shock that he is lost, in a different world. Now, Tam does, of course, manage to return to his own time but only with the help of Winnie the dog and Rosie, a filthy 'bag lady' from his own time who seems to pass freely between the boundaries.

Flying Sabai with Thai Airways International Recently there's been a lot of concern over the well being of passengers who fly long-haul routes. At THAI passenger safety and comfort has always been a top priority. In recent years we've introduced a number of inflight firsts to help make travelling on THAI as smooth as silk. In the Thai language we have a word that's synonymous with good health, both in mind and body. We call it "sabai." Our aim is for our passengers to "fly sabai." And at THAI we're always learning, too. With input from passengers, safety experts, aircraft manufactures, medical professionals and engineers we're always looking for the latest in passenger comfort, health and safety.
For almost 50 years travellers have taken commercial flights for both business and pleasure, to cross continents and oceans to get them to where they wanted to go. The first passenger service took place on a New York to London flight on October 4, 1958, and since then millions of people of widely varying ages and states of health travel by air every daysometimes for very long distances. Safety standards have improved and it's an acknowledged fact that air travel is the safest means of transportation. It's more dangerous getting to the airport than it is flying. Yet nowadays it seems all we hear about are things like flight-related illnesses, time zone disorders, long-haul stress. It's enough to make anyone think twice about flying. But what's all this about? A year or two ago we never bothered about things like air sickness and jet lag, and no one ever mentioned time zone disorders.
