The Globe and Mail Veteran Montgomery recovers remarkably from artery blockage
Athlete qualifies for Olympic triathlon, 10,000 metres only months after surgery BEVERLEY SMITH
Sports Reporter Toronto Sometimes when she thinks about it, Carol Montgomery feels overwhelmed. At 34, she's on the brink of competing in her first Olympic Games. You would think that would be enough to make anybody's heart flutter. But Montgomery has more to think about than most. She could have lost her leg last year because of an artery blockage, but she cleared that hurdle with major surgery only six months ago. Despite it all, Montgomery has qualified for not only one sport but two at the Sydney Games: triathlon and the 10,000-metre run. Neither are sports for the weak of heart.

Olympic Triathlon Medalists
History
The triathlon entered the Olympics faster than any other sport. Created in 1974, it became an Olympic sport in 2000. The original triathlon, as represented in the Ironman competitions, is made up of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile cycling leg, and a full marathon of 26 miles, 385 yards. However, in the Olympics, as in other internationally triathlons, the distances are much shorter: a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer bicycle ride, and 10-kilometer run. Top of page

The history of triathlon. The official distance for triathlon was set at a 1500metreswim, a existing events in each discipline already on the olympic programme
http://www.triathlon.org/itu/itu-general/history.htm
The History of Triathlon Triathlon was invented in the early 1970s by the San Diego Track club, as an alternative workout to the rigors of track training. The club¹s first event consisted of a 10km run, an 8km cycle and a 500metre swim. Over the next decade, triathlon grew by leaps and bounds and soon gained recognition throughout the world. In 1989, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) was founded in Avignon, France and the first official world championships were held. The official distance for triathlon was set at a 1500metre swim, a 40km cycle and a 10km run taking from existing events in each discipline already on the Olympic programme. This standard distance is used for the ITU World Cup series and will also be featured at the Olympic Games. Since 1989, the sport has grown rapidly and now has over a hundred affiliated national federations around the world.

What is the Triathlon/ Duathlon? The Mike Burwell Memorial - Niagara Triathlon committee (MBMT) runs a short course and Olympic and a sprint distance Try-a-Tri that is sanctioned by the Ontario Association of Triathletes. The event is staged on July 12 th and 13 th , 2003 centered on Merritt Island in Welland. The Olympic distance tri starts with a 1.5km straight-line swim up the Old Welland Canal Recreational Waterway. It is considered one of the best swim courses in Canada - a distinction earned for the comparative cleanliness of the water and the absence of undertow. The swim is followed by a 40km cycling race that winds through the hills of Fonthill and Pelham. With the addition of Saylor's Hill in Pelham in 1991, this portion of the Burwell race has been developed to be one of the most challenging bike courses in Ontario. For those who are unfamiliar with Saylor's Hill, on Effingham Road,it carves a line straight up the face of the Niagara Escarpment. The final section of the race is a 10km run up and down the bicycle paths on Merritt Island. This run is straight, flat, refreshing, scenic and second to none.

Coaching Certification USA Triathlon Coaching Certification History The USA Triathlon Coaching Certification Program was started in 1996 under the direction of George Dallam, former USA Triathlon National Teams Coach. In line with the United States Olympic Committee's goals for long-range planning of athlete and coaching development, the USA Triathlon Coaching Certification Program was born. Dallam brought together a group of expert and experienced triathlon coaches to form the USA Triathlon National Coaching Committee. The National Coaching Committee has defined Coaching Certification levels and requirements through the documentation of athlete and coaching competencies at all levels of development. The National Coaching Committee continues to be the definitive body of experts overseeing the USA Triathlon Coaching Certification Program. The first Level I, or Developmental Triathlon Coach, Certification Clinic was held in December 1997, and was attended by members of the National Coaching Committee. The Clinic was conducted by current National Teams Coach, Matt Haugen, and Michelle Blessing, former USA Triathlon National Teams Program Coordinator and Junior National Team Coach. The goal of the Certification Clinic and National Coaching Committee meeting was to establish the framework for future certification clinics that would soon be open to the public. In the summer of 1998, National Coaching Committee member Cyle Sage hosted the first USA Triathlon Level I Coaching Certification Clinic open to the general public. The clinic was held in Gainesville, Florida and was followed by another Level I Coaching Certification Clinic in December held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. In November of 1998, the first Level II Coaching Certification Clinic was conducted and limited to members of the National Coaching Committee. At that time, the National Coaching Committee began planning for the first public Level II, or Expert Triathlon Coach, Certification Clinic which is scheduled for December 1999 at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center.
