RANDALL LEWIS
Age Group: 16-19
Hometown: Provo, UT
Started Racing: 1999
When Randall competed in his first triathlon at the age of 16, he had no idea that this sport would yield the exciting experiences that it has. Having placed right in the middle of the finishers in that race, he was determined to improve and excel in this sport. Now, more than two years and thousands of training miles later, Randall has reached an elite level of ability and competition as is evident by his race times and placings, including 1st and 2nd place performances at the past two Triathlon Junior National races in 2000 and 2001. Randall's short-term goal is to continue to train and to race successfully at 2002 Nationals and Junior Elite Worlds. Ultimately, he hopes to go to the Olympic Games in 2008 to represent the USA and compete in the third Olympic Triathlon.

As an athlete and coach I have, over the years, developed a number of training programmes to develop the athletic abilities of myself and the athletes I have worked with. As many coaches will tell you, and quite rightly so, a training programme has to be developed to meet the individual needs of the athlete and take into consideration many factors: gender, age, strengths, weaknesses, objectives, training facilities etc. As all athletes have different needs a single programme suitable for all athletes is not possible. planning page. Overview of the Training Programme
The seasons training plan is based on six phases where each phase comprises of a repeated four week programme. Introduction
What I have attempted to do is to provide an insight into a season's training programme for a elite athlete competing in the Olympic Triathlon. This programme will require modification to meet your or your athlete's needs and should be reviewed in conjunction with the information on the planning page. If the athlete is under 18 years of age then I do recommend that you read the page on coaching young athletes Any application of this training programme is at the athlete's own discretion and risk.

Triathlon

The triathlon has only been in existence since 1974, but it will make its debut as an Olympic sport in the Sydney Games. It consists of three disciplines - swimming, cycling and running.
The Basics
  • The race is continuous with no breaks between legs. A quick transition from each leg to the next is crucial. A maximum of 50 athletes will compete in each of the men's and women's events.

Swimming
The first leg of the triathlon is a swim around Farm Cove in Sydney Harbour. Competitors may use any stroke. Swimming caps are mandatory. Length: 1.5 kilometers (0.93 miles) Cycling The second leg of the race is cycling. Cyclists will often ride in packs to benefit from lower wind resistance. Hel-mets and covered torsos are mandatory. Length: 40 kilometers (24.8 miles) Running The last leg of the triathlon is the run. The athletes may run or walk. Shoes and covered torsos are mandatory. Length: 10 kilometer run (6.2 miles)

ABOUT TRIATHLON
Triathlon is one of the 2 new sports for the 2000 Olympic Games. It will be the FIRST event of the Games, with cameras cutting from the Opening Ceremonies to the start of the women's swim leg. The women's race will finish in front of the Sydney Opera House on Sept. 16. Triathlon consists of three combined disciplines: the swim, the bike and the run , in that order. Very simply, the first athlete across the finish line of the run is the winner of the event. Between each leg of the events is the t ransition area. This is the staging area where triathletes transfer from one discipline to the next from swimmer to cyclist to runner. Primarily important for its fenced-in pen of bike racks. Seconds won or lost in "transition" can amount to the difference in the outcome of the race. Each country in the 2000 Olympics may send a maximum of three men and three women.

That in itself makes the event special. But what makes it even more special for Australians is the fact that it is very likely to be won by an Australian. According to the International Triathlon Union (ITU), at the end of 1999 the four best female triathletes on the planet were Australian: Michellie Jones, Loretta Harrop, Jackie Gallagher and Emma Carney. Two other Australian women, Joanne King and Rina Hill, were also in the top 10.

Mr. Bunn's opus: Swim, ride and run
In most high school physical-education classes, dodge ball is considered an extreme sport. In Denny Bunn's P.E. class, however, students dodge trees while ripping through the 1,600 acres of woods on mountain bikes. They can also be found swimming laps or pounding out trail runs. Mr. Bunn's triathlon class is now in session. The private Maclay School in Tallahassee, Fla., has offered triathlon as an elective for two years. For the first semester, only 10 students signed up. The class is now filled to capacity with 15 budding triathletes. "If we had any more, there wouldn't be enough room in the woods for us to ride," says Bunn, 49, a three-time finisher in the Hawaii Ironman triathlon. Maclay is one of the few secondary schools in the USA to offer nontraditional sports as part of their official curriculum. In addition to triathlon, Bunn teaches an aquatics sports class that includes kayaking, life saving and underwater hockey, played in a pool with short sticks and snorkels. The former commercial diver came up with his alternative sports ideas while studying for his teaching certificate. He wrote a paper on teaching "lifetime" sports.

USA Triathlon, the Olympic governing body for triathlon and duathlon in the U.S., will soon call Central Florida its home. This 146-acre campus will also be the warm-weather training site for the British Olympic Association.
