IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE Age Group/Teams Course The Age Group/Teams Swim course will be off the beautiful Mooloolaba, THE ELITES ONLY WILL BE SWIMMING IN THE MOOLOOLAH RIVER the reason we have moved the swim for the elites is based purely on a request from TRIATHLON AUSTRALIA for a still water swim as a qualifier for the 2004 Olympics - it will be this way for 2003 and 2004 only. Unfortunately, we can not logistically do this for the age groups - the two transition areas would not be possible. We appreciate your understanding on this issue. Magill: Taormina ready for Sydney triathlon
Hopes to become second woman to win gold in different sports in separate Games
As I chatted with Sheila Taormina on the telephone Tuesday while she was at her home in Livonia, Mich., I learned she is ''on schedule'' in her preparations for the Olympic triathlon, which is the opening event for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, Sept. 16. Taormina said she isn't worried about the notorious sharks that infest the Sydney harbor, site of the swimming leg of the triathlon. ''It will be spring in Australia, and I understand that the water is too cold for sharks,'' she said. ''However, the cold water requires us to wear insulated 'wet suits' that stretch from neck to ankle.'' Taormina had the benefit of competing last April in the World Cup triathlon, which was also in Sydney. ''We did have sharks in the water then,'' she said. ''But there were many officials in boats who hit the water with paddles to scare away the sharks.''

Join the Discussion "I have just recently started swimming outdoors for early morning practices. The water is very cold, as low as 60 degrees. I can't really stand the cold that well, and I even had to get out of practice early today because it was so cold I couldn't breathe. I don't have asthma or any kind of breathing problems either. Does anybody have any suggestions on what to do about the cold, and ways that could help me breathe better during these cold morning practices?" BRRR!!! The Water's too Cold!!

TRI UK Shropshire Triathlon 2003, Ellesmere, Shropshire
Have you ever raced at Ellesmere?
If you haven't then make Sunday 8 June 2003 the day to travel to what must be the prettiest course on the circuit. Situated 16 miles north of Shrewsbury and using a beautiful Mere for the swim you will be amazed by the size of the transition area and the freedom you will experience as you move from one discipline to another. It has been said by National Referees to have the most spacious transition area of all events in the series!
This will be the twelfth year of this exciting and popular event. The Ellesmere event has grown rapidly since the inception of the first race on Sunday 20th September 1992. Compared to the success of subsequent years it was a relatively low key event but still attracted a high quality field of 120 athletes and a large number of spectators.

The Sydney 2000 Games were the largest yet, with 10,651 athletes (4,069 women, 6,582 men) competing in 300 events. Birgit Fischer earned two gold medals in canoeing to become the first woman in any sport to win medals 20 years apart. Judoka Ryoko Tamura lost in the final in both Barcelona and Atlanta, but came back to win the gold medal in Sydney. Steve Redgrave became the first rower to win gold medals in five consecutive Olympics. The US softball team won in stirring fashion, losing three games in a row and then coming back to defeat each of the teams they had lost to.

Two sports will make their Olympic debut this year in Sydney, Australia: the triathlon and tae kwon do. The triathlon's modest history can be traced back to the jogging craze that overtook the United States in the early 1970s. Tae kwon do, on the other hand, has been around for thousands of years.
This Week:
The Long Road to the Olympics
su-bak gained a large following. Su-bak eventually faded, but the martial arts survived as recreation. In the 1950s, a group of leading Korean martial artists joined together to unify their various art forms. The unified style became tae kwon do, which means "the way of hands and feet." Tae kwon do's trademark is its spectacular kicking techniques. The sport, consisting of sharp, strong angular moves and free-flowing circular movements, was based on a defensive strategy and originally was developed for protection. Yet it also is a technique of mental discipline that gives its practitioners self-confidence. In 1973, the sport staged its first world championships. It became a demonstration sport at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul and followed up with the same role in the 1992 Games in Barcelona. It is one of the two new official sports this year at the Sydney 2000 Games.

Beijing Olympic Bidders Promise Quick Solution on Pending Games Venues
The three venues which the International Olympic Committee (IOC) evaluation commission had recommended Beijing to review will not pose any problem to Beijing's campaign for hosting the 2008 Olympic Games , a senior bidding official said here on Sunday.
Lou Dapeng, Sports Director of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Bidding Committee (BOBICO), said that they will work closely with the related international federations for a quick and better resolution.
"It is not a big problem. I believe we can sort it out smoothly," he said at a press conference after the IOC inspectors left Beijing for Osaka Sunday afternoon, after a four-day inspection tour of Beijing, one of the five candidate cities for the 2008 Games. The IOC evaluation commission suggested during the inspection tour here to reconsider the venues proposed by the BOBICO for the sports of beach volleyball, mountain biking and triathlon for the 2008 Games.

St. Anthony's Triathlon reaches the big time
This year's event is the first World Cup triathlon on the mainland United States.
By PETE YOUNG ST. PETERSBURG The St. Anthony's Triathlon has gone big time. Big, big time. The nice local race in the newfangled sport developed into an elite triathlon in the 1990s. Now it's a major international athletic event. Officially. This year St. Anthony's is a World Cup race, one of 14 on the International Triathlon Union schedule. It is the first World Cup triathlon on the mainland United States (there have been two in Hawaii). Today, St. Anthony's reaches the pinnacle. "In 1999 and 2000, (St. Anthony's) more than demonstrated it was ready to move up to host a World Cup," International Triathlon Union executive director Loreen Barnett said. America is regarded as the birthplace of triathlon, and now the top American triathletes will have a World Cup race on their home turf.

NEW YORK TO HOST THE WORLD IN 2003 City set to hold four major international Olympic sport competitions in 2003 January 6, 2003 New York's bid for the 2012 Olympic Games will get an important boost in 2003, as the city hosts four international Olympic sport competitions. More than 2,000 athletes from around the globe will compete in the world championships of archery and freestyle wrestling and the World Cups of fencing and triathlon. These events will help demonstrate New York's ability to - and enthusiasm for -hosting the biggest sporting event of them all. "These events will continue to stir New York's passion for Olympic sports and will help demonstrate why the city is such an exceptional home for great international competitions," NYC2012 Managing Director of Sports Wendy Hilliard said. "Each sport will get unparalleled exposure and find a wealth of enthusiastic New York fans who will cheer for athletes in their native language and welcome athletes from all over the world." The events will kick-off in June when the world's best women foil fencers return following the success of last year's World Cup stop in New York City. Men's and women's sabre fencers will hold their World Cup competition in the city simultaneously on June 12-16. "New York has a long history with the sport of fencing," said Hilliard. "The New York Fencers Club, which hosts this event, is highly experienced and we expect an enthusiastic crowd."
