You are now here: off the beaten track MUSIC AND CULTURE The infectious sounds of Trinidad and Tobago can be enough to keep some folk dancing for two days straight on our streets
Trinidad and Tobago is the home of Calypso and Steelband along with two new music art forms Chutney Soca and Rapso. Carnival is held every year and it falls on the Monday and Tuesday preceeding the Lenten period starting with Ash Wednesday. The lead up to Carnival includes many musical, cultural and carnival related activities such as the prejudging of the costumes. Trinidadians and Tobagonians are known for their Calypso music, much of which is eventually translated for the Steelpan, and instrument invented in Trinidad and Tobago. Our music is partially defined by the many different races that live on this twin island in harmony, some blending has taken place resulting in several dynamic and lively forms of entertainment. Some of our different types of music include Calypso, Soca (Soul Calypso), Rapso (Rap and Calypso), Indian Music, Chutney Music and now Chutney Soca music, Parang, and of course the well known Steelband music (affectionately known as "Pan music").

More than 'sea-sun-sand', discover rich Tobago culture beyond our turquoise beaches...this island is alive with laid-back villages containing a rich cultural heritage.
What a Caribbean stereotype! Glorious honey sand beaches, waters swarming with tropical fish, fresh smelling rainforests and a relaxed bunch of locals. Who could ask for more? What makes it even better, is that Tobago is one of the least developed islands of the Caribbean - so it's the pure, original thing! On Tobago, you'll feel as if you've traveled back in time a century or more. Barefooted boys lead goats along winding roads flanked by bamboo thickets and glossy-leafed breadfruit trees, as crystal-clear streams cascade down mountainsides toward quaint villages with colonial English names like Roxborough, Scarborough, Plymouth and Charlotteville. Tobago, counts 210 species of birds, 17 species of mammals, including the crab-eating raccoon and the world's smallest alligator (found only on this island), 23 species of butterfly (including the Blue Emperor), five species of marine turtles, 24 species of snake (none poisonous), 16 species of lizard (including the green iguana), and 14 species of frog.

Trinidad can be truly described as the birthplace of calypso, limbo, soca and, of course, the steelband. It is a richly cosmopolitan country, comprising of people whose ancestry were Africans, Indians, Creole who are a mixture of two different ethnicities - usually Black and Indian, French, Spanish, Chinese, Lebanese, Syrians, Americans, Venezuelans, and some of the original settlers, the Amerindians. The largest non-secular groups are of the Christian faith, followed by those of the Hindu, Islamic and tradition African faiths, especially Orisha. Noteworthy Trinidadians are writers V.S. Naipaul, recent Nobel Prize winner for Literature, Earl Lovelace, and Samuel Selvon. Carnival artists Peter Minshall, Edmond Hart and Stephen Deryk; philosopher C.L.R. James; cricketer Brian Lara, holder of the world records for the most runs in a match and also holder for the most runs in a Test Match and the world's greatest calypsonians, the Mighty Sparrow.

Common name: jumbie beads, crab's eyes, wild liquorice
Precatory-pea - Abrus precatorius seeds contain a chemical called abrin, which is highly toxic. A single well-masticated seed can kill an adult human. The seeds of this plant are imported into a number of countries on necklaces and perhaps on other decorative items. These attractive seeds are shiny, red, and black and about 5-8mm long. The plant is a slender twiner with alternately placed compound leaves. Each leaf has about 20 pairs of narrow, oblong leaflets , looking like a delicate feather. The rose to purple flowers are crowded at the end of a stalk. Fruits are short, inflated pods, splitting open when mature to reveal the round, hard and shiny seeds which are scarlet but black at the base. The plant is native to the tropics. It grows by the seashore among the undergrowth and in hedges.
POISONOUS . Seeds when broken or chewed or when the external coat is removed are toxic. The highly attractive seeds are sought after by children for beads. They are sometimes made into necklaces and rosaries. Seeds are extremely poisonous if cracked; a single one, if swallowed can be fatal. Also deadly to livestock.

The culture of Trinidad and Tobago is a reflection of a creative and vibrant, ethnically mixed and cosmopolitan society. The gay rhythm of the steelband music, the pulsating beat of the tassa drums, the entertaining calypsoes and chutney songs, the romantic swaying of paranderos at parang time, all tell the tale of a people emerging from four centuries of colonialism, independence and republic rule. The contribution of the East Indians to national cultural survival is of tremendous significance. The lighting up for Divali, the rhythmic swaying of the Holi Dancers at Phagwah, East Indian planting and harvesting songs, all bear open testimony to the rich cultural diversity of a people in a land where "every creed and race find an equal place." In a land where a blend of Spanish, French, English, African, East Indian, Chinese, Portuguese, Syrian and other minority groups tell the story of togetherness as a people, it is becoming more and more evident that programmes on culture must be given priority. The Trinidad Carnival has been described in many circles as the "world's greatest festival." It continues to attract thousands of visitors yearly. Started from mere mockery of pre-colonial landlords by their `inferiors', the festival has grown into a rich reserve of craftsmanship, song and music that must today be the envy of many nations.

Country Flag ... Travel Warning History Christopher Columbus landed on Trinidad on July 31, 1498, during his third voyage. At that time, the island was populated by a relatively peaceful Arawak subgroup called Igneri, who engaged in primitive agriculture, and the fierce Caribs. Culture: The people of Trinidad and Tobago enjoy a rich cultural tradition. The distinctive West Indian musical form of the calypso originated in Trinidad during the 1800's. The calypso music, which is now part of the West Indian people's way of life, is a cultural and artistic expression of the political, economic, and social situation. It has been described as a development of African folk music, with French creole and Spanish influences.
